Highfield Road.

Much easier to get to, better atmosphere (even if it was centred on the West Terrace), plenty of boozers near by, short walk to town, the feeling of walking up to the game through the side streets rather than just parking up in Tesco's and walking across, being able to stand without some divvy steward in your face all the time, being able to stand with your mates, close to the away fans so better banter, it's own personality rather than just another carbon copy lego stadium, being able to hang flags over the hoardings, just a better all round match day experience.

the only things i miss about Highfield road is it was 10 mins walk from town, and that the away fans were 10 ft away from you in the west terrace and then banter was awesome!

Highfield road was a bit of a shithole. The Ricoh is a much better stadium. Views, toilets, beverages, just about everything as it goes.

Couldn't beat HR for atmosphere on a matchday though. The West Terrace was the place to be. If I couldn't get a ticket there for some reason I would consider not going at all.

Well for atmosphere I go back to the early seventies when I was a kid. The Cov mob were right behind the goal, packed in like sardines and the away fans were only the width of a gangway away. The gangway consisted of two crash barriers which ran from the front of the terrace almost to the back. The terracing went almost to the far wall at the back except for a fence and a sort of alley which ran behind it. At one corner the back of the terrace was a few feet above the alley and at the other corner (by the Main Stand) it was about twenty feet above. This stemmed from when they levelled the pitch. Police used to stand in the gangway between the fans and all the chanting was backwards and forwards (and the spitting). Most games it would kick off with some Cov getting into the away fans from behind and going for it but every now and again (Spurs, Blues and Man Utd spring to mind) we lost it and they 'took' the middle of the end. We called it the West End then not the West Terrace and I loved every second of it in there. The noise under the stand was deafening.

A packed Ricoh would be better than HR easy.

Better noise wise, no big gaps In the corners between stands, unobscured view for everyone, big TV for replays, better concourse.

The biggest reason though is the casino. It is unbelievable we get such an awesome place for pre and post match drinks. The stuff with Billy Bell and the legends for instance is brilliant.

Yeah - the Ricoh sh1ts all over Highfield Road - but I still have fond memories. Once we've got fond memories of this place it'll be no contest between the two.

Or do you mean if and when we get to pack the Ricoh it will be better?

Other than the fun day out at away games I prefer to be in an away end as we are normally packed close together, not spread out all over the place like we are at home. This creates atmosphere.

Growing up in hillfields in the 80/90s its always going to be highfield road for me

Actually they are very different. Capacity for a start! yes they have similar design but big differences when looked at closely. The rake of the seating, the amount of rows, the window design and size, the attachment of a hotel for a start...how different do you want?

I don't agree at all. The stand where all the boxes and the dugouts are is not like any other that i've seen. The casino and Jaguar Exhibition Halls also make it appear very different.

This stadium is unique - who else has a place like the casino? If only the product on the pitch matched the stadium!

You've hit the nail on the head mate. It's an entertainment venue not a football stadium. The revenue from the football is secondary to that of concerts and exhibitions and the Olympics and the hotel etc etc etc.
That's why Highfield Rd wins hands down. A proper football stadium with no frills, no eirs and graces, just good old fashioned football.

Actually closer that expected.

For me going to the football has, and always will be, more than just actually watching the football so whether I get a good view, better toilet facilities etc. is secondary to me.

To me it is all about having the crack and the banter and sometimes the football actually comes second place. I've been to a few matches where the football has got in the way of a good day out.

This might change when I take kids up etc. but the matchday experience, to coin a cheesy phrase, is as much as importance as the game itself.

What's the Casino and the Exhibition hall got to do with football? Go to Cardiff their main stand is identical to ours.

They both have their pros and cons, but Highfield Road gets my vote.

The atmosphere, both before, during and after the games, banter with away support were all much better, the amenities at the ground werent that bad (seen far worse than what HR had in more recent yrs), and it was a proper old fashioned ground. Easily accessible by bus, car, on foot etc.

I like the Ricoh for the casino, the impression they put on our City when they bring big names to perform here, but not from a football perspective, unfortunately.

I'd love to move back there, if only we could

This reminds me of debates about music. I would maintain music was always better in the 70's and then someone would remind me about "Tie a Yellow Ribbon" and I'd concede defeat. Nostalgia is a dangerous drug and distorts the truth.
If you take away the emotion Highfield Road was a cramped outdated stadium. Towards the end it was very poor. Facilities to purchase refreshments was dire and the parking a nightmare. Ricoh is a far superior stadium. Memories are at Highfield Road but that is it.

As someone living a fair way away, just the fact that HR was so much easier to get to was a major bonus. But otherwise, despite the classic stadium feel, the Ricoh is an impressive stadium, i think people who argue that are lying.

Ricoh is the superior stadium, it is only a shit atmosphere because of the position the club are in. I only went to Highfield road in its last few years when we were a championship/division 1 club and I don't remember the atmosphere there being special with only 9-12k in the stadium apart from the fixture vs Derby.

Depends in what you are after I guess. I have never wanted anything more than to watch the game and have a good crack so HR was fine for me. I could survive 90 mins without a drink, burger etc and would have put my bets on in the morning. Used to love drinking in the local then enjoying the walk up and getting there just in time for kick off. I do conceded that the Ricoh is great for what people want these days but I could manage without it
