I know this won’t go down well, but it’s the truth:
The problem isn’t Wasps. Any buyer would have wanted their own staff. The problem was that Sisu broke the lease then harassed the landlord to the point they wanted shot as it had become a liability.
If you don’t like the fact this shit is happening blame Sisu and the people on here who cheered them on for “getting one over on the council” with the rent strike. Worst strategy ever. Never forget the long term damage that did.
I’m not going to get dragged into a debate regarding the politics of the RICOH I will say this.
The sale of both shares in the RICOH to Wasps represents an existential threat to CCFC. As far as I’m aware (so I could be wrong) it wasn’t necessarily the case that either the Council or ACL were under financial pressure to sell the RICOH in the first place.
All it takes is for Wasps to turn around and say they don’t want us at the RICOH and we’re essentially homeless. Is there even a feasible plot of land to build another football stadium?
The RICOH row was something of a ‘Game of Thrones’ — I think the sale to Wasps was political in nature to outmanoeuvre SISU just as SISU played ‘the game’ by withholding the rent in the first place. However...
Without a doubt, the long term future of CCFC is in doubt. I don’t mean 5-10 years, I mean way beyond that and the days of SISU’s ownership long forgotten. The club is in a position where it cannot feasibly own even a part of the RICOH and is at the whims at another sports club. The alternative is maybe sharing with Cov Rugby? Again, an unsustainable agreement. Which means we will likely have to look into building our own stadium. The obvious questions are; where will a new stadium be? When will it be built? How, and who can finance it?
The thing is, CCC has a responsibility to CCFC regardless of who owns us, or what the relationship with the owners is. Because of CCFC’s significance to the city and community. Owners come and go, and after the SISU nightmare is over, the question is, what’s next?
It’s ok for the CCC to refuse to sell to SISU, however, it’s another thing entirely to shut the possibility of CCFC of owning a share in the stadium, in all perpetuity. I could live with Wasps owning half the stadium, and ring fencing the other half for when either ACL or CCC deemed CCFC ‘fit’ to own the remaining half. The stadium was built for CCFC after all.
I’ve said my piece, the last thing I want is a protracted discussion on who did what and whether it was deserved or not. I believe my opinions are a pragmatic observation of CCFC in the very long term.
