Used to work in Egypt where one of the chefs told me the chicken soup was not meat because it was soup! Also had to check with the staff in Wetherspoons that the sausage was actually veggie it was just too meaty for me and I couldn't eat it.

There’s an interesting film coming out about plant based diets and sport later in the year. Not sure how widely it’s going to be distributed but it’s certainly food for thought
Watched this last night. Really really interesting film and an eye opener. Not even necessarily the facts behind the health benefits of a plant based diets but how the meat and dairy industry has used the same tactics, research and marketing companies that told us that smoking is good for you.
What’s it on Tony? I would be interested, I must admit that most of my diet is based on meat as I enjoy eating it but if there was a sustainable alternative that doesn’t cost the earth (excuse the pun) then I would consider switching. Okay films like this also work on the extreme with top athletes who have time and unlimited support to achieve greatness but would be interested to see how this affected the common man like the fire fighter shown on the clipWatched this last night. It’s still on in cinemas but limited release. I watched it in Coventry last night but I think it was the only date in Coventry.
Interesting that you mention athletes, I’m amazed that all athletes aren’t on plant based diets. It’s certainly catching on but there’s some early examples that the lessons should have been learned from like Carl Lewis who apparently recorded all his PB’s after turning 30 and converting to a plant based diet. The guy who unexpectedly beat Connor McGregor after stepping in at 11days notice is a vegan and McGregor was making light of this during the press conference with references like are you sure you have the energy to fight me etc and then conceded after the fight that he had simply ran out of energy whereas the vegan still had plenty.
It goes heavily into the science and explains that the animals we eat are just a middleman, the so called goodness we get from them they get from plants they eat. The meat and dairy industry are climbing all over vitamin B12 at the moment claiming you need to eat meat and dairy to get it, it actually comes from the ground which is where livestock get it from, we used to get it from foraging for food and drinking directly from streams. The myth is that you can get all your B12 from meat. You can’t, meat eaters are still in a need of B12 and should take a supplement to get it just like people on plant based diets.
It’s easier than you think to get on a plant based diet, it’s all about making the transition and learning. You don’t need to do it all in one day. They cover some work with the NYFD as the biggest killer of Firemen on the job in the US is heart attack. They measured the cholesterol of firefighters from one house and they all had high cholesterol, one of the worst guys was also probably the skinniest guy in the house, they put them all on a plant based diet for a week and it was incredible how much their cholesterol dropped and all that had seriously high cholesterol were now somewhere near normal. Then they had other benefits such as weight loss, gains in energy etc.
I’m sold. What’s a good place to start with veggie recipes?
Sounds really interesting to be fair, I think my issue is time but I think you need to devote a bit of effort into it. Personally not a big veg lover so I guess step 1 would be cutting out meat and having a suitable replacement I.e quorn. Never heard of it, I thought it was a mattress!Tempeh makes a really good meat substitute. Especially in Spaghetti Bologna’s and chilli. We moved away from quorn mince quite quickly, in a chilli we just fill it full of different types of beans and lentils.

Been a Veggie for about a year now. Thought I'd struggle more than I did making the change.
So much easier to make the switch nowadays. Loads of options in normal supermarkets, you don't feel like you are missing out or having to make too much effort. I remember my sister going Veggie as a teenager in the late 80s early 90s. Her school dinner was exactly the same as everyone else's but with the meat element being replaced by a handful of grated cheese! I highly doubt it was veggie cheese either.
One of my best finds is the Vivera kebab meat. So nice, great texture and flavor without the gristle. Couple of pittas, salad, garlic mayo and hot chilli sauce. Better than from the takeaway.

See, I don’t think I’d particularly struggle myself (aside from the fact that I bloody love a steak) but my other half is rather fussy when it comes to veg.
