I remember this case very well because a lad in my year at university was one of his victims. He survived strangulation by Nilsen, unlike so many other of his other victims, but never returned to college after the whole trauma of what happened to him became fully apparent once Nilsen was arrested. Nilson , upon realising his victim had woken up the following morning, actually suggested he visit the hospital . It was here they diagnosed strangulation.
I became aware of what had happened to our poor colleague only after his name was made public during the trial of Nilsen , though there had been a rumour that he had been attacked and wouldn't be returning to complete his degree. He was lucky, which sounds a bit odd , and I hope wherever he now is, he has been able to get on with his life.
As for Nilson, I hope he had an agonising death.
"The coroner was told he spent his final hours in prison in "excruciating pain", lying in his own filth as he suffered a ruptured abdominal aortic aneurysm"
