MVE played very well

He drops deep so one of the fullbacks doesn’t have to tuck in to make the three when we attack which allows Rudoni freedom instead of having to take up the left wing spot.

Early days in the two but not too concerned. Grimes doing what he’s always done in dropping deeper, but do think he needed to look for a riskier pass at times.

With how vertical the midfield is, we often go wide and use the additional cm to support the wings, which I think Sheaf can do well. Just will take time.

Thought they did well to break up Portsmouth’s play.

Grimes drops back to play the quarter back role -a position most definitely Sheaf can’t play.

Sheaf needs to play further forward as he is more prone to a mistake than Grimes is.

Also all the folks saying that Grimes is picking up the ball too far deep-it’s a tactic!! It gives us control and options and it’s much better than relying on out two centre backs to pass through the lines.

That being said it does take a player out of midfield which means that the opposition can pack the middle forcing us out wide.

I was disappointed last night that we didn’t have a tactic to beat the Pompey press (which we’d have known about!) although we took control in the second half and there was only one team in it.

Sheaf is still not match fit but they can play together and if there’s one manager who can get the best out of Sheaf-it’s Lampard.

What’s brilliant is that we have three very technical midfielders (inc Rudi) who can receive the ball in tight areas, keep it and pass it forward.

I'm fine with Grimes dropping in sometimes to get things moving but once he was in midfield, his movement was non existent most of last night. Need more from him when teams are sitting in like that.

The sideways and backwards thing is what it is. We knew that before we signed him. It doesn’t bother me.

The most disappointing thing is his defensive attributes. Their chance in the final 2 minutes shows his lack of mobility and ball winning skill. Compare this with when Sheaf gave the ball away on our left hand side, he was able to work back and commit the foul (which wasn’t given) to stop the counter attack. If grimes is going to be sitting in a back 3, he must be able to break up play when we have lost the ball.

I guess it can be a little narrow if our aim is Grimes in the 6, Sheaf in the 8 and Rudi 10, but as long as MVE and DaSilva get forward to give the additional width and Sheaf drops in as a 2nd 6 when defending, then we should be fine.

Happy with him doing it when needed in regards to basically being even deeper than the defence

But on the rare times he advanced he wasn't good enough. Not strong enough, passing the safe option not incisive

Agree - he must be under instruction however? Killed us last night him playing sweeper almost. Especially after loosing torp.

Grimes has passing range to be real threat further up. Wonder if sheaf coming back in may tweak that?

WHAT A 3 POINTS - all that matters now.

I don’t object to getting the ball up the pitch with short passes, but you need to tread carefully with it as mistakes invariably lead to goals.

Mistakes will happen over the course of a season..but if the good outweighs the bad it's worth it.

Grimes is playing his role well and I think we look better since he joined. Instead of 2 CBS passing sideways there is a 3 man line that can push left or right to get the ball up the pitch before grimes makes his way into midfield once that has been accomplished

But it didn’t ’kill us’ last night. It brought us control of the game and from that point we dominated.

Only have to look at the comparison between 1st and 2nd half stats.

Pompey all over us in first half-second half after asserting control by letting Grimes play in between CB’s they didn’t get a touch.

Deliberate tactic and it worked.

Stats can paint a picture and narrative you choose.

Personal opinion he was too deep. IF he was further up pitch who knows what impact that would have had. just feel he could influence games even more and hurt teams more with his range.

Look if that was the plan last night, fair play, and as I said, suspect was as per instruction so well done FL et al.

Seems to be working fairly well playing Cullen and Laurent there for Burnley in this league.

I had no issues with either last night. People don’t understand how difficult it is to try and play through a team that gets everyone back behind the ball, cutting off the space. It means the only option most of the time was to try and manoeuvre the ball around them, which made some of our play look pedestrian. This wasn’t down to Grimes and/or Sheaf, was just the way the game was.

These two can 100% play together! We have struggled with the gap between Defence and Midfield for a long time. Look at the first half of the season how often we'd struggle to get the ball passing between lines and end up lumping it forward, ultimately losing it. We now have a player in Grimes who can have the ball under pressure and allow other players to strive forward. Sheaf has struggled with injuries, looks sloppy but having him a little further forward could open up his game. Grimes is now the backbone of the team and how Lampard wants to play.

Sheaf is class and I am sure he will be able to play alongside an equally class player in Grimes. Rudoni Sheaf and Grimes is a very good championship 3

If Grimes goes into midfield you're asking for Kitching/Thomas to play passes through the press into midfield... with little cover if they get it wrong.

I would also like Grimes receiving it more in midfield and turning on the ball, but its just not feasible unless you have CB's that are very good at progressing the ball. We may see it next season if we sign one but it just is not an option this season.

Grimes was stood still far too often when the CBs had it and he was closest to them, or when Sheaf received it from the CBs. If he wants to impact a game like that when a team is sitting, he can't just quarterback from a position of safety all the time.
