Sixfields or Cheltenham ? (1 Viewer)

Living in the Cotswolds I have a soft spot for two local teams -- Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham Town. I used to travel the 34 miles to the Ricoh (where I did Hospitality), but there is NO WAY I will travel nearly 70 miles to Sixfields to watch CCFC (aged nearly 72). I decided to try Cheltenham Town Hospitality in the New Year -- just £42.50 - includes allocated seat in a box, private bar, hot buffet, programme and allocated parking space.
Considering the petrol costs to Sixfields, time etc when Cheltenham Town FC is just 20 mins away bears no comparison. When CCFC returns to the Ricoh I will of course also return as CCFC has been my team since 1952.

I admire your honesty VOR, but I could not seriously go and watch another team play. Its the Sky Blues or nothing for me, and I would rather find another sport to watch than another team.

I would consider Nuneaton if I wanted to continue watching live football. I see them in a few years in Division 2 and living in Bedworth I can relate to this.
Of course Coventry is my team as I was born there and I will resume on their return to the Coventry.
I still live in hope that SISU will see sense and I still believe Xmas will be my decision point. I will certainly stop going to the away games after Xmas if still at Sixfields.
With any hope of promotion quickly diminishing I see dark days ahead.

I am not sure I could really support another team. I could watch another game of football but it wouldn't be the same as there wouldn't be any passion for it and I wouldn't care who won.

Exactly Nick, I could never support any other team than CCFC, but I love football and if I can watch a game in comfort with Hospitality for just £42.50 for my "fix", I will. I have opted to go and watch Cheltenham v Northampton and hope Northampton lose just to stuff Cardoza for allowing CCFC to play at Sixfields.

When I lived in Cambridge I used to go and watch Cambridge United but it's nothing like the same. Just went along as it was something to do, my mates were going and it was relatively cheap (even had a visit from the mighty Sky Blues for a pre season game!). At the time Dion had just signed for us so a lot of their fans were interested in how we were doing.

Fratton Park is at the end of my road but the only times I've been there are when we've been playing them and an England Womens game, have no interest in going to any other game. Did consider going to some Saints games this year as I won't be going to Sixfields but the prices are too high as a neutral supporter.

I think VOR is trying to highlight an alternative that makes fiscal and locational sense for him in the short term before Coventry move back to Coventry. I cant disagree as I would maybe do something similar as I need my football "fix" also. I'm assuming it would just be for the football not the team to support.

I went to the Cheltenham Town pre season friendly many years ago when BR was still in charge and thought it was a very nice place, both the town and the stadium. Their fans were friendly and it was a warm summers day which undoubtedly helped. Never been tempted to support anyone else though and until the charity match this year I'd never been to another match where we were playing at the same time. I agree with Nick though, if I was watching another team I wouldn't care about the result and would always want to know how we were getting on.

I can't/ won't support sports teams from any other Town/City. Coventry is my home City { although we live 9 miles outside}, this is where almost all my family come from, it's where I spent a few years of my life having been born there and the place I have played, drank, shopped and buried my Grandparents. My kids who have all faced intense pressure from the Leicester crowd in our locality have been brought up to have the same loyalty. We support the football team, Cov Rugby, Cov Speedway and Cov Blaze and by that I mean going to matches/Meetings, parting with hard cash and wearing our colours with pride !

I've started supporting Leicester.

It is only 22 miles away, they also play in blue and of course are still called 'City,' so quite a smooth transition really.

You wouldn't go anywhere you couldn't walk to from your house ! If City moved back and it was outside of CV6 you would still boycott it !

I have lived in various parts of the country over the years esp South Yorks and Greater Manchester. Always followed city but occasionally took in local games.

It is good to be neutral on occasions, a different experience. You often see the ref and the opposition in a different light t.o the locals. It makes you realise how bias the passion makes people to the point of comedy.

Whichever you choose go and enjoy.
My personal favourites Sheff Utd because of the pub pre match their passion the atmosphere their desperation to be better than Wednesday and Leeds.
Oldham the humour of the fans, meat and potatoe pies, after a couple of inconsistent seasons were about to take off with Big Joe Royle a joy to watch Irwin, Holden, Bunn, Marshall, Milligan, Ritchie and Palmer to name a few.

I still have a letter from George Curtis thanking me for my support and interest. I recommend Cov look at Irwin, Milligan and Bunn. I don't know if they did?
Irwin went to Man United and was their full back for ever and a day.
Milligan went successfully to Everton and Norwich.
Bunn banged in loads of goals six in one league cup game, a record at the time until injury put an early end to his career.

Back in 81-83 I worked at the hotel in Watford where the team used to have their pre-match lunch. It was the time of Elton John as Chairman and they were flying in Division 2, got promoted to Division 1 (yeah that long ago!) and finished second, I think. The team had Luther Blissett, John Barnes, Eric Steele, Kenny Jackett and Nigel Callaghan. I used to get free tickets if I wanted them and used to go occasionally for an afternoon out...... But I never "supported" them, just got a football fix for a while!

I can see your point though VOR.

There is no way I could support another team other than Sky Blues, but be buggered if I'm going to make a 140 mile round trip to Sixfields at my age (nearly 72) ! I can go to Cheltenham and watch a football match IN COMFORT for £42.50 Hospitality Package "all in". I do not support Cheltenham, but always keep an eye on their results -- same goes for Nuneaton, Leamington and Forest Green Rovers,
