Were sounding like a pub team !!!Coventry City manager Tony Mowbray has said that Mark Venus is in charge of trying to sort out a couple of pre-season games for City in Ireland.
City are hoping to go to Dublin but most sides in the Irish Republic are playig league games and some are playing European games and those who are playing friendlies against British teams have sorted out their opponents a good while ago
Mowbray told the Coventry Telegraph's Andy Turner: “The Slovenia trip fell down because the cost ran away a little bit.
“It’s not going to be an organised trip but something we put together ourselves where we go and play a couple of games. Mark’s working on that and it’s just a case of whether there’s the cost in the budget to do it.
“I’m pretty relaxed about it and if the money is not there to do it we’ll spend the money that is there on other things that will help develop our football club. And if we can’t do it then we’ll have to find other matches to complete our pre-season. We’ll deal with it, whatever.”

Bloody hell its a pre season tour, how can't we afford it? It's not like it's anywhere decent like America or a South American country it's Slovenia ffs. The non playing budget must be extremely low if this is the case, doubt any incoming players would be impressed the club can't even fund a week away.

I don't mind Ireland anyway. I'd go over and see us play whilst visiting some friends.

I'm not massively fussed about not going to Slovenia but when it's because we can't afford it this worries me massively.

How are we meant to compete for better players offering peanut money? I'm not saying lets over pay old footballers but we need to compete to challenge that's all.

I was encouraged by the lack of signings and with no signings this week it won't be till at least next week now and which point it's Wigan in 30 days time.

I still trust TM but without knowing what's going on I am starting to shit it slightly. What we have currently is miles off and lack of depth. The later we leave it the later it takes to get settled unless you get lucky.

Couldn't agree more. It's not the fact we aren't going to Slovenia as no one cares but when we can't afford to get there and play a couple of non heard teams over there then what's the playing budget and attractions?

Still don't understand this idea that the playing budget is going to be low, why on earth would TM have agreed to manage us if he knew he wouldn't be getting a competitive budget.

Good point and another point is well hopefully if we can't afford the trip away it's because the budget is higher so more money taken from other areas and put into the budget.

It's just worrying that's all to hear. Why start talking and planning Slovenia if it can't be done financially.

But it's what club every does, no? It's a week away from where the players you live, have a bit of fun improve team spirit and let the new players bed in. I think the players would be dissaponted they'll be no tour too tbh, it's probably something they look forward to. Guess we have to go with what we've got we guess.

I would much rather have a pre-season in the uk if the budget is small so we can invest in bringing 1-2 experienced players in to the squad instead.

Every pro club goes to another country though, there's a small budget and then there's not being able to fund a week away to Slovenia.

yeah i agree to what you're saying but usually the tour away is for 'bonding' purposes whereas the players we have at the moment have been together for at least a year if not more therefore shouldn't need to go, if we bring in a few more players or were to have an overhaul at any time then yeah fair enough take them away, TM just wants games for the lads so to ireland it wouldn't quite be for a tour.

Some of you guys astonish me. We don't want to buy a season ticket but we want the club to bank roll a promotion chasing team. 3500 season tickets?
It's call struggling times. What do youdo when you don't have money? You tighten your budget. I personally like the fact we are not going tothis place or that because TM thinks the training ground needs freshening up. I like the fact he won't sign players just to please fans. If he rushed to get players in most would moan, if we started the season badly, that he rushed signed players.
TM is a football manager and an experienced one at that. YOU GUYS are fans, NOT professional managers even you think you know it all. If you buy a season ticket, tops etc, well done but I know for a fact half on here don't attend matches BUT they want the world. FFS GROW UP

Btw. Dortmund II play in the third league, so they will give a good test. This would be a perfect standard to be pitched against preseason.

TM's plan of Irish teams is good though. The level May not be great, but they are into the season and fitness levels could be quite high. Let's hope that Venus sorts those few games out!

It's a 2 season plan to get promoted isn't it? So anything positive this season will be a bonus. Better to finish midtable and have a few decent signings ready for the season after than to rush this season, achieve nothing, and have to start again next summer. Pre-season tours are non-essential frills anyway when we're at this level.

I 100% agree. What is the point in spending money going abroad when you can arrange fixtures here - have a much better chance of your own fans traveling to watch you and playing under conditions that are going to be something like you're going to expect for the season proper? I cannot understand why some teams would go to a piping hot climate when in a few months they'll be playing in the rain and the cold.

Totally agree that there's no need for overseas friendlies. I remember as a young lad of about 10 years old being on holiday in Weymouth for 2 weeks(Wow) and after the first day camping with my Nan and Grandad, a massive Marquee was erected not far from our tent. Then the following day about 30 footballers turned up. It was Swindon Town on tour lol. Mike Summerbee, Ernie Hunt were 2 of their big names. I was allowed to get their autographs and have a kick around after they finished training. My grandad was given 2 tickets for a tour game against Weymouth FC. which he took me to watch the game with him. So, there's no need for big friendlies. Getting back to lack of signings, I've always given whatever manager was in charge, be it Coleman, Boothroyd, Thorn, Pressley etc, time to prove themselves. Lets give TM enough time to do just that.
