Todays telegraph back page, joy sapeela tells manager steven pressley he can hold on to his star players in january and spend to bolster his squad for a promotion push.
With joy meeting ann lucas last week now this is there anything in it, either way this is actually good news , lets hope its true , thoughts

Two things of interest.

Why, on this occasion is it Joy Seppala, and not Waggot or Fisher. That may be seen as encouraging if JS is trying to correct her current image.

If this is indeed true (Was it a Les Reid article?) Then there is evidence that SISU have learnt something, from past experiences.

If this is a real change in attitude and approach, if it is followed by a return to the RICOH & JS continues in this vein I can foresee a time when many true sky blues, may forgive if never forget.

The thing is the club can only spend 75% of the wages of an out going player, now to my knowledge we still have 4 players we could bring in and the club did look at a special dispension with the FL to bring in less players but to combine the wages.

I think this article (which I haven't seen) is just a publicity stunt, Steven Pressley has said many times he doesn't want to go out and bring in players that aren't going to add an additional something to the squad, the main type of player that Steven Pressley keeps talking about bringing in is a pacey winger.

IF we signed a winger, a centre back and a loan striker, and kept hold of everyone in Jan (poss let Manset go as well), we would still be in FFP, and also would be in a lot better position than now.

It would be a big step, but SPEND SPEND SPEND is a PR job if ever there was one, as its only money SP could have spent but didnt in the summer

I've just read it. Basically, they have said they are working on the latest set of accounts so once those have been finalised along with the liquidation process then the embargo should be lifted. But with the piss poor crowds at Sixfields we're not likely to be able to sign any world beaters.

To be fair I think the SPEND SPEND SPEND tag is more to do with the Telegraph than the Club.

Coventry City boss gets go-ahead to buy not sell in January transfer window

Sisu chief Joy Seppala tells Steven Pressley he can keep his stars and make new signings

Steven Pressley has been given the go-ahead to buy rather than sell in the January transfer window.

The Coventry City manager and his assistant Neil MacFarlane met with Sisu boss Joy Seppala this week for a progress report on the football front and to discuss the way forward for the Sky Blues.

And Pressley came out more than satisfied when the Sisu boss reiterated the intent tohold on to all the current young stars that attracted interest from other clubs in the August window, and told him he will have cash to spend on strengthening if he wants it.

“Neil and I had a meeting with Joy for three or four hours in London,” he said.

“It was an update report and a case of chatting over what we have done so far and the strategy moving forward, and really looking towards January. That was the content of the meeting to be honest, and discussing all those matters.”

Asked if he’d received assurances that the likes of Callum Wilson, Cyrus Christie and Leon Clarke – all of whom were the subject of approaches from other clubs when the last transfer window drew to a close – would not be sold, he said: “Absolutely, she is very keen for us to build the side around our young players so it was a really good meeting.

“She reiterated the fact that we fully intend to retain the players we have in the window.

“Conor Thomas signed a new contract this week and I think that shows the intent to try to keep hold of players and build the team. And hopefully in January, if the right players become available, we can add to the squad.”

Although City are still in a transfer embargo due to the administration process and non-filing of accounts, the club appear to be edging closer to that restriction being lifted to enable them to operate freely in the market.

The club say they have now filed their 2011/12 accounts for the companies Sky Blue Sports and Leisure and Otium Entertainment Group Ltd and are now working towards filing their 2012/13 accounts which, once done, along with the completion of the administration/liquidation process of Coventry City FC (Ltd), should enable the embargo to be lifted.

That said, they still have the capacity to bring in four new players in the one out-one in rule after Gary McSheffrey, Steven Jennings, Kevin Malaga left the club by mutual consent in September, following the departures of William Edjenguele, Cody McDonald, David Bell and Chris Dunn.

So far City have signed just three players in Andy Webster, Mathieu Manset and rookie defender Stuart Urquhart.

Each time City want to recruit a new player they have to apply to the Football League for permission and show that there is a correlation between the released players’ wages and any new signing whose wages cannot exceed 75 per cent of the man he’s replacing.

The club can also buy new players, as they did with Urquhart, albeit a small compensation fee to Rangers, as long as the club’s owners pump in equity to comply with the Financial Fair Play rules which state clubs cannot spend more than 60 per cent of their revenue on the team. So, for example, if City bought a player for £150,000 then the owners would have to inject £250,000 extra income to the club.

Pressley relied on free transfers for Webster and Manset but clearly has a bit more scope in the market now. And although he’s keen to add quality, in particular a quick left-sided player, he said: “I really enjoy working with a small squad and from the discussions we had with Joy the importance is not to just bring in the player, but to get the right player.

“What we discussed is it’s better to pay some sort of fee for the right player than pay no fee and bring in the wrong player.

“So if there is a small fee to be paid then that’s something the club would consider if it was the right player.”

Asked whether there is any news on talks over a return to the Ricoh Arena, he added: “Our discussions were very much based around the football department, the on-going strategy and recruitment of players, the Academy and all the things that Neil and I influence.”

I genuinely don't understand why we should sign another Centre Back, we have Jordan Clarke and Andy Webster who now seem to be forming a good partnership, this is emulated by the fact that we have only conceded 3 goals in the last five games, which isn't bad considering in that time we have played the top two teams in the league in this time.

A loan striker to cover Leon and Callum like Loza who we currently have is ideal, a pacey winger would be fantastic, but it's so hard to come by a player of that type as SP is finding out.

every team needs 4 CB in a squad for me

jordan has done well yes but to rely on cyrus as the 4th backup CB is asking for trouble down the line possibly.

We do have 5 Centre Backs though (Or should I say players who are capable of filling this position) in Christie, Willis, J Clarke, Webster and Urqhart. Why the need for another??

It would be good to be able to bring in players in January if outgoings were minimal. This is something that's completely hampered us in the past. Momentum in January as well as bringing in new players could be the difference. However, as others have said, we'll see what happens when we get there.

" Coventry on a roll would be a threat in any division, with a sniff of success their capacity to take massive numbers everywhere they go cannot be underestimated. Like it or not they are a big club. Hopefully they'll sell their quality in Jan!"

If you mean CB's then my advice that if Jordan Clarke got injured for instance, swap Cyrus to CB as he used to play there and put Aaron Phillips at RB.

Jordan I think has done well at CB his season, his mistakes have cost us goals but not much in the grand scheme of things, they haven't also been down to how well Jordan has defended his position, it's been Jordan's decision making. I have two example's:

Vs Preston (H) - I think it was the third goal or possibly the fourth where the ball was hoofed forward and instead of clearing the ball safely, Jordan left it thinking Murph the Smurf would get it and Preston scored a gift. Not ideal but had Jordan just played safe and hoofed the ball into row z it wouldn't have been issue.

More recently..

Vs Wimbledon (A) FAC - Jordan's sloppy pass gave the Wombles possesion and they buried us, in fact I think this was a pass of a player in confidence more then lack of decision, Jordan has played really well and his game at Wolves showed what he is really capable of in that position, it's no secret that we like to keep the ball on the floor under SP and play and I applaud that. Could Jordan have gone back to Murph the Smurf instead of trying to pick out Adams or Moussa?? Probably but it didn't cost us nothing on the grand scheme of things.

Jordan has earned a new contract, is highly thought of by the manager and all the credit goes to Jordan as he came back with the right attitude after being told he wasn't wanted. I have been impressed more so with Jordan then anytime previously, against Wolves and Walsall Jordan was quality if he can carry that form and consistency through the season then it will be one of the highlight's in a good season. Players will always make mistakes, I don't think it's worth signing another CB over.

Hardly, it wouldn't wash with the council's committees would it? "Oh yeah, we've knocked price down because Joy Seppalla has made a vague promise to sign some players"

More likely be the opposite - it demonstrates that SISU may have some money so any pleas of poverty will be ignored...

Not sure it is relevant to Ricoh Talks.
You invest 250k on getting promotion.

You secure an extra 5 million funding which covers the 2 million they are losing a season whilst they are not at the Ricoh.

Getting promotion and a successful campaign strengthens Joy's hand.

She would be crazy not to go for it.

It has been said that promotion to the championship is worth 5m a season. And as we are doing well so far it wouldn't be so much of a gamble gifting the club a bit of cash to get in a player that would improve our chances. And they wouldn't lose the money as the player would still be with us.

Yes although they are IMO doing completely the wrong thing regarding the Ricoh
They are however going in the right direction with the team.

Small investment in January could support an outside push for the top two.

JS has now realised that growing your own players can make good profit thats what these Hedge funds look to do, She realises that getting promotion creates cash flow and as they cannot get their money back, they also know that SP could probably get us up to the Premiership

I get the feeling that Joy Sepalla is much more savvy now on how football works, she admitted she was oblivious in the past and didn't even know Coventry City football club existed. I believe prevous guardians of the club, Imreomre, Ken Dulieu etc, ran the club their way kept her in the dark and who knows what happened during that time ! My betting is she has been advised and learned that promotion earns the club about £5million in in TV money. The next move surely now has to be a Ricoh return which I think could see gates well over 20000, that's a lot of dosh. With Tim Fisher looking sidelined hopefully she is working on a face saving plan to come back home, home for Christmas for me would be better than a few new signings, both would be great.
