I saw Sporting play in Feb/March 1987 during some R&R. They were selling both Benfica and Sporting flags outside the stadium. Lad I went along with bought a Sporting one and I continued my lifetimes theme of controversy by purchasing a red one. I was immediately booed by about 60,000 people as soon as we stepped onto the terraces.
The local kids around us, once they knew we were English, just wanted to talk about English footy. We caused some perplexity when we told them who we supported (Lad I was with was from Barnsley)
They all had their favourite English team - The L'pool and Man U supporters were to be expected but a couple threw in surprises owing to where a father had worked in the UK for a few years or having an English Grandparent. One kid cracked me up tho when he told me he supported Chelsea. I asked why and he replied - "Because their fans are so fucking crazy, man"!
Can't remember who the opposition were but Raphael Meade scored a hat trick (possibly even all four) in a 4-0 or 4-1 victory.
