Could we have a huge squad overhall this summer? Doing a bit of time wasting at work and thought I'd put it up for discussion after making a list. Haven't included the U23's. Might have missed someone as doing the list off the top of my head

LOB: Out of contract/out of favour
Burge: Out of contract and may not sign on

Defenders:
Grimmer: Not consistent enough to start at League One level IMO so there's a question of whether he'll ever get game time/out of contract in the summer
Sterling: Will return to Chelsea
Hyam: Under contract but will likely have a number of admirers
Willis: Out of contract in the summer
Davies: Out of contract in the summer
Mason: Under contract, will probably stay
Brown: Will almost definitely leave either this window or next
McCallum: Will probably be here next season
Camwell: Down the pecking order so will probably be moved on in the summer

Midfielders:
JJ: Won't be ready next season, and contract could potentially be terminated unless we remain loyal
Andreu: Will be released in the summer
Doyle: Will either retire or he'll be released. Judging from his lack of game time at the minute the writing is clearly on the wall
Bayliss: Personally think he'll stay on next season. His performances this season haven't warranted a big summer move
Kelly: Will be here next season
Westbrooke: Will be here next season most likely
Ogogo: Looking increasingly likely that he'll be moved on
Allassani: I can imagine he'll still be here but perhaps could be moved on as he's shown very little to suggest he could break into the starting XI
Thomas: Will return to Derby
Bright: Will return to Wolves
Shipley: Unsure of Shipley. I'll leave that for discussion. Personally think he'll stay

Strikers:
Ponticelli: I can imagine he'll be loaned out again
Bakayoko: Perhaps could be loaned out? Completely out of favour at the minute. Or is he injured?
JCH: Will probably be here next season
Chaplin: Will be here next season
Hiwula: Will be here next season
Biamou: Will he be ready next season?....I'm assuming so but likely to be a wait and see scenario

So All we need is a whole new defence, a few midfielder's and two or three 20 goal a season strikers.? Piece of cake.

I can naturally see a big overhaul of the side with players holding their own fate with contracts running down and key areas needing refreshing or replacing be that recycling cash or free transfers. I’d hope for minimal loans once again leaving options come January should we need it.

A few I’d still offer new terms to also, Grimmer is still worthy of retaining for L1. In his 8 starts he’s don’t done badly and certainly not played enough to rule out. It will be up to him if he feels he may get more game time elsewhere.

Shipley is under contract till 2020 so might benefit from a loan in L2 sooner rather than later as he needs minutes to develop and see about any future with ccfc at this level. Ponticelli another injury free loan.

As for Ogogo and Brown I’d like to hear from MR what actually is the issue if not I’d expect them both to be made available.

Can't help but feel we have missed a decent opportunity this season with the squad we have. It will be hard to be stronger next season with the players we are likely to lose

As worrying as it looks on face value at the end of the day 3 top players in a team are enough to transform it from bang average to decent.

How hard can it be to find 3 decent players - yeah prob best you don’t answer that and depress me

The process will be a lot easier the sooner we have the ground situation resolved. A more difficult sell regarding incoming/renewing contracts whilst things are up in the air.

This is why I can't buy in to the season of consolidation to build on for next season. You need to build around your best players, but at the minute its very likely we'll lose our best Players in the summer.

This season has a lot of similarities to Mowbrays first full season in charge. I have similar concerns for this summer.

I can’t imagine anyone wouldn’t want to get back-to-back promotions. But, is our team good enough for playoffs? Probably not. Realistically, there needs to be a plan in place to get promoted within 2-3 seasons, in my view. The majority of our squad is under contract, so I’m not particularly worried. Losing Burge and Willis would be a blow, but there’s an opportunity there to reinvest and look elsewhere. I think Bayliss will probably stay for another season unless a big bid comes in, and then we have the resources to invest across the team.

That’s the issue though. Where is the opportunity to reinvest when Burge and Willis are quite likely to be off on free contracts. Both are over 24 so it’s not like we’ll receive compensation. This has always been our issue. Usually teams achieving promoting have played with each other for at least a couple of seasons. We could have that sort of unity next season but unfortunately yet again if you take my notes as face value it’s looking likely that another squad re-haul is what’s awaiting us this summer.

Grimmer is out of contract at the end of this season. If a ‘better’ RB is brought in, I highly doubt he’d stay here to sit on the bench for yet another campaign. I think unless MR can convince him to stay on, he’s more than entitled to move on in the summer to pursue more first team football at another club.

Depends how many times a day.

Having any sort of budget to buy players for fees is quite rare for the bottom 2 leagues in it's self anyway.

I have to be honest but at this moment in time I’m more concerned with where we’re playing next season before I’m going to start worrying about who’s going to be playing for us next season.

If the club and MR had that same attitude there wouldn’t be a competitive squad to start with next season either way....surely it’s business as usual until all relevant parties are told the club aren’t 100% not playing there next season?

Agree with much of this. MR (hopefully) won’t strip too much of the squad as it would be too big of an ask to replace players in such volume. But if you take it at face value there are plenty that are vulnerable to depart.

The only one I disagree with and can see leaving is Grimmer. But that will depend on whether he wants to take a similar stance as Davies and go seek out first team football elsewhere.

Willis was 23 when the season started so we should get compensation should he leave. Personally, I can't see both Willis and Burge leaving. It's a possibility but these players should see the opportunity to get promoted into the Championship with us as neither of these players is likely to start every week in an established Championship team.

Worst case scenario, we'll lose 4-5 starters and that isn't all that bad. The nature of the league we're in means we'll rely on 1-3 loans to boost the squad anyway and with our reputation in developing young talent, players want to join us. We could get a windfall for Callum Wilson which would be massive for us.

You define it as an overhaul, but players like Ogogo, Andreu, Brown and Davies haven't really made an impact on the Starting XI all season so them leaving isn't really a big deal. Brown is the minor exception, but right now, 3 of those players aren't even getting in the matchday squad. Doyle is now relegated to a substitute role and I could see him being kept on as a player-coach, but it was clear to most that this was going to be his last season as a large contributor to this squad.

There was a poster who drew similarities between us this season and Mowbray's first full season This is not the case as we have a competitive U23s team, we have most of our best players under contract and the club seems to have sorted itself financially so we're not cutting costs. There ought to be genuine optimism around the club. But, we're Coventry City, we only do cynicism and pessimism!

I can see why Grimmer might leave, but I guess would depend-I think as you said- if there is a better option for us out there?

Good news about Willis. Didn't realise it worked like that.

Isn't that bad? That's near-on half of the starting XI and some of the potential departures (e.g. Willis, Davies and Burge) are considered by many as arguably the best players at the club. So, I wouldn't exactly consider that as a positive whatsoever - both for team chemistry or for the overall quality of the team. I do agree with your point though as all three leaving is effectively a worst case scenario situation. But it isn't out of the question though so I'm personally not as laisse-faire about it. Who's to say a League One club with a bigger budget wouldn't take a chance on Willis/Burge? The likes of Charlton, Peterborough, Barnsley could easily pip us in a bidding war and would happily take them on.

Would you not describe it as an overhaul? As I've previously stated if you take my notes at face value, IMO that would be described as a squad re-haul wouldn't it as t's not just the fringe players that would be leaving, as you stated. Burge, Sterling, Willis, Davies, Thomas, and (as he's captain I'll still count him) Doyle, are all set to depart if their contracts aren't extended, with a further 9/10 potentially leaving on frees/loans. That's a huge proportion of the squad potentially being moved on come summer hence why I started this thread as it's interesting to see people's views and opinions. Obviously like you said this is worst case scenario, I'd be surprised if that many were actually to leave as the workload for the playing staff to recruit that many (decent!!) new additions would be too much to handle in such a short space of time....

For a moment I had the same thought go through my head but you're right. We have a sustainable infrastructure in place and the club is far better equipped in the recruitment department than we were under TM. I have far more faith in MR to bring in competitive signings and judging from rumours (Michael Rose), work has already begun preparing for the summer.

Well I think that's a question for MR and the playing staff unfortunately. My guess is, if there is a better option out there that MR could perhaps develop then he'd bring him in in a heartbeat E.g. similar to Mason. But it just depends on who's available really.

I agree can't stand that phrase either and judging from our transfer policy, it's unlikely we'd bring in a 'proven' striker anyway. Although I do think 1/2 will be moved on anyway even if another isn't brought in as for instance, I can't see there being room for Biamou and JCH playing in the same team as effectively they do a similar job.
