Squad numbers? (1 Viewer)

I wonder when these will be released?

I would be interested to see if certain numbers (9?) are kept free!

Squad numbers mean less and less every year, but I love over-analysing them.

Think it's kind of strange how we've had some extremely sought-after numbers (7, 9, 10, 11) taken up by very peripheral players recently

Doesn't really mean much nowadays. I think Beckham wore 23 for Real Madrid and for LA Galaxy and was always first choice, and Fankaty wore 23 for us last season as first choice too. Think it goes on player preference as much as anything. Like the way Herbie always wears 53.

But that's more by circumstance than planning. JJ got 7 when he was on the up in league 2 having that good spell. Jobello #10 played most games till he was injured, was a big signing. As was Hwyula until he went off the boil. Max #9 was a little odd but we were in league 2. I love Max but think he could lose that either by being sold or them using the number as an added sheen to persuade a striker to sign. "here Tyler Walker come and be our number 9' sort of thing

id argue godden would get the #9, ohare #11, giles #2 and perhaps shipley to #8, not sure mason could keep #3 over dabo or giles?

Googled Matt godden previous shirt numbers and transfer market listed his past numbers - he has worn 24 quite a lot for different clubs (only wore 9 for Peterborough), so he might stick with 24 - but who knows?

You'd think they'd want the squad numbers out for the kit release so if people want them printed up they can be before shipping.

Last few years lots of players have kept the same number for following years regardless, with one of two changing for one in the first 11. Giving everyone under contract a number and not leaving any gaps for signings I'd have:
1
Marko Marosi
2
Fankaty Dabo
3
Dom Hyam
4
Michael Rose
5
Kyle McFadzean

Think most people will stick with their current numbers, although expect O’Hare to get 11 or something similar. Pretty sure the 2 was free when Dabo joined last season so 23 was a choice from him. Hamer wears 38 as well I think, wore it was Zwolle and has it on his training kit as well.

Beckham chose that number (Michael Jordan's number), he wasn't assigned it by RM.

Hamer in the bomb squad already?

I think the player has more say in the number they wear these days. Their lucky number, first squad number, DOB or any other superstition they might have, a bit like Formula 1 drivers keeping a number through their career. Looking at cricket Jimmy Anderson wears the number 9 (main strike bowler), not even sure why they need numbers???

putting jones at 16 and hyam at #3 makes me shudder

Hyam I gave 3 because if I was giving out numbers based on likely first team appearances and if we play 3CB's I needed an extra number for all of them. I was going to put them at 4,5 and 6 with 7 and 8 Kelly and Hamer 9 Godden and 10/11 O'Hare and Allen/Shipley. But I decided to move Giles from the first 11 because he's a loanee.

Jones has hardly played for two years and his natural position is one that our formation doesn't have. I can't see him being more than a bench player at the start of the season. So it makes sense for him to drop out of the first 11. Who in that first 11 do you think is less likely to play?

It's all meaningless anyway because players will pick their favourite number for whatever reason and it'll look nothing like that come the start of the season. Chances are at least half a dozen of those won't even be given squad numbers at all.

I think it was just to make it more accessible for people to be able to identify players. I am glad that Root chose 66.

I like they have their number of their cap in test cricket based on how many people have played for the country before. Would love that to be adopted somehow in football so your number is instantly retired when you leave regardless.

oh yeah, i mean im not having a go or anything, just a sad that jones isnt considered a starter these days (understandably considering the lack of games) and yeah we had watson on loan at #2 last season, but i do know what you mean.

i always think it must be so awkward when a player that has a 'good' number gives it up/told to give it up for another player in the squad, like i cant see jobello willingly giving up the #10

Some strikers will choose numbers that add up to the one they want...
Zamorano used to have 1+8 when at Inter as Ronaldo was the 9.
Likewise 19 - mcsheffrey had it for a bit and then became 10, and I think Clinton Morrison the same?

Wikipedia page has put numbers next to players but it seems like somebody has just guessed it / made it up

On the basis of Walker having his number in the photo the club twitter account posted and playing in the new kit tomorrow, at least I assume we are - would be odd not to after announcing it, reckon there's a chance we'll get squad numbers tomorrow.

Can't see them printing shirts with generic numbers just for a BCD friendly.

SBT

Looks like the numbers are set if today's squad is anything to go by (they usually say they're using generic numbers, but not today)

Ostigard - 2
O'Hare - 11
Hilssner - 17
Giles - 18
Walker - 19
Hamer - 38
