Doesn't look like they've included many of the U23s in the list they've released except Howley, Bapaga, Tyler.

Tavares, Ngandu, Rowe, Evans-Harriott, McGrath etc. all had numbers last season.

Some players retain a number some pick a favourite number. It doesnt really indicate who will be playing each week.

Yeah, that was what I was getting at, just because they're not included on that list doesn't mean they don't have one.
I saw on Twitter that somebody thought it meant Ngandu was being released for example.

If you look at what they've been wearing during the friendlies they look largely unchanged from last season + obviously the new boys (Rus is 43 etc.)

If you are under 21 you don't need to be registered to play. Squad numbers also have no bearing on squad registration they can be two separate things. So even mason, jobello and hilsner could be registered without having been given a squad number.

Ok, so the next question is what is the purpose of this list aside from sending a message that someone like Howley has more chance of getting a look in than Jobello?

The meaning? Sort of, but it’s usually posted when a player either has a bad injury or has been told he hasn’t got a future at a club. Seen Jodi and Brandon Mason use it.
