I'm interested to see how the FA handle the Andre Gray case and how consistent they will be with the Stokes punishment. In my opinion, Gray's tweets were far worse in that that they were directly attacking gay people and appeared to condone the killing of gay people with his hashtags BUT were tweeted 4 years ago when he was still playing at Hinckley which may cut him slack at the FA.

Any predictions for his punishment?

Personally I think its madness he's being punished for something that happened 4 years ago. Nobody gave a shit about what he tweeted until he scored a premier league goal.

I don't think you should muddle nobody knowing with nobody giving a shit but I do think the elapsed time will work in his favour.

He should have and probably has had media training since he joined a league club and with that knowledge should have deleted those tweets, They were in the public domain and in that he is guilty no matter that it was 4 years ago, The FA can't be seen to go soft on such disgusting tweets in my opinion especially after the punished Stokes for what was a throw away comment that if he wasn't in the position he was in would have gone un-judged. In the day of so much social media I know many employers that would class that as gross misconduct whrther it was a personal account or not and would deal with it in a far worse way than the FA ever will

His agent/club have seriously messed up here. Know someone who does social media for footballers and the first thing he does when they start representing a new player is to basically delete all old tweets and create a new account from scratch.

On this topic, someone at CCFC should seriously sit Jodi Jones down and tell him to STOP SNAPCHATTING WHILE DRIVING!

Of course he should take responsibility for his actions, which I believe he has done, it was nothing to do with Burnley and therefore I can't see why they should be trawling through an adults social media account from 4 years ago. Its not even an FA matter surely? the guy was 21 not even a professional footballer, he held views that some may fine offensive but I suggest it was just a stupid immature action. Personally I find all these witch hunts offensive. A hashtag is not a weapon.

# is not a weapon unless you are on the receiving end of the directed abuse!
And just because he was not a professional footballer when he said it...obviously if his comments come to light (although 4yr old comments I find the motive for them being found questionable) he should explain & apologise & set his views straight as a mature adult, perhaps?

Why should a homophobic tweet 4 years ago when he was registered under the football l league playing for Hinckley be treated differently because it was 4 years ago? If he does not get at least what Stokes got then CCFC should sue the football league because of the games that he got ban cost us vital points.

That was the same said about Stokes's tweeted comments but he still got banned at least Stokes removed his comments which is more than what Gray did. He should get the same punishment

Well I do agree and he should be getting what Stokes got as a minimum. But I just think he will be pleading it was 4 years ago, he's a changed man, not done anything since etc and expect them to give him 4 games instead of 6 for example.

It has everything to do with Burnley. They could lose their most expensive striker for a number of games.

Point taken! I meant that Burnley should not suffer because of the tweets, he was not with them at the time and was not even a pro footballer therefore I fail to see how it is their issue. Give the guy a break, he made a mistake, educate him but have a sense of proportion about the crime. Stokes was a fool, so was Gray but it was a different set of circumstances and Gray has said sorry and stated he no longer holds those views.

4 years ago !!! , plenty of time to have grown up and have completely different outlooks on life.
If I still had my opinions of 30 years ago I would be sitting in a jail cell now and so would many more on this forum .
Times change , people change so hope they cut him some slack.

I've grown up too. I used to think flares were cool, now I don't. I used to like blondes and now I'm with a brunette for 10 years, I never thought I wanted kids and my daughter is now the focal point of my life. However I've never suggested gay people should burn and die on social media and then gone on to be a public role model earning a hugely privileged salary in an industry trying to eradicate that type of attitude. Would have been the simplest thing in the world to delete those tweets and if you really felt that extreme about it and had changed, you'd probably remember writing such things.

Stokes got a 1 game ban for his slur. Suarez 8 games for his racial abuse. I'm expecting the FA will go somewhere in the middle for this.

What has earning a hugely privileged salary got to do with anything? you want him punished because he has made a success of his life? or is because you think he has influenced a generation of gay haters to burn homosexuals?

I think the point is he's in a position of responsibility. A premier league footballer with tons of kids wishing they can one day be like him. Therefore he needs to be a positive role model. As all Pro footballers do. They have more influence on young men than most politicians do.

Odd part of the paragraph to pull out, I thought it was quite self explanatory when you read the full sentence. No, I do not want him punished because he has made a success of his life.

His salary though is a result of the crazy amount of money in the industry, huge amounts contributed by the general public via matchday and TV subscription income. Therefore the industry has a responsibility towards reflecting the diversity of it's support and grass roots, hence campaigns like Kick It Out (which does not target only racism). His privilege as a role model within that industry is to reflect their standards and even if he has changed his views, he has still left comments like that with his name on out there in the public domain. I don't think it will result in people setting fire to gay people either but for the FA to do nothing will be to casually condone it and that does send a message, however subliminal.

Esoterica, thank you for a great response.....I am not asking the FA to do nothing or condone, I just hope that a stupid comment by a young man who was not in the public eye is not used to "burn him"

I've posted some shit on here when pissed (not racial or offensive but crap) and deleted them a day or 2 later. I won't ever be in the public eye but feel embarrased by those messages. If i played footy at semi-Pro or Pro level
1. i should not be getting that pissed i type shit like that (need to be fit for the next game if i have any ambition).
2. If i know i was pissed i always go through my social media to check what i typed.
3. If not pissed then you will remember what you typed so no excusse, if you don't delete and apologise for those comments you deserve what you get. Don't care if it's four years later, you said it so deal with it.
If you have changed your opinion great, but we all know most will do as they have to reduce the penalty from FA and because the club tells them too.

Living here in GC (it is the gay capital of Europe, (so many gay festivals etc) and so many live here you can't hide. Before i moved here, i must admit it i never liked it. Now i know so many and also work with so many i have to say that they are just like anyone else only, some are nice people some are not just like everyone else.

My Mrs brother went to a club, he felt uncomfortable and had a go at a gay guy. The bloke done himself pround and made me laugh loads, he just told him "don't be so cock sure of yourself, no thanks mate".

Now some of my best friends are gay, who gives a shit! if they don't hit on to you, what your problem and like the Mrs Brother got told "don't be so cock sure of yourself, no thanks mate". Not every gay guy fancies you.
