People who do not rate Thorn as a good manager state this for various reasons.
One repeatedly quoted reason is that he either does not make substitutions or he makes them too late.
A counter arguement to this was that his subs bench was never better that what was on the pitch. So even a tired player of his first 11 was better that a fully fit player on the bench.
The only way we were either going to find out which view was correct would be if his bench was stronger.
Last night first time with a stronger bench for AT. He made two substitutions after 57 minutes and one of them scored.
He made the substitutions, he made them early enough to impact on the game.
I hope now regarding this particular criticism of Thorn, it has been put to bed.
Next we need to see how he performs if the club either dont sell all his best players on him. Or if they do (which is a financial reality) they only do it once the cheaper replacement has been pretty much signed up. Also that Thorn is happy with the replacement. Sadly under SISU I cant see us ever getting to put this particular arguement to bed either way

Can I just punch a small hole in your argument though, as Platt was injured and had to come off. Can't see how you can give any praise to Thorn for that. AT actually said Platt shouldn't have even been playing in the first pace as he was carrying an injury. Can't see how you can praise any manager for substituting an injured player. To do anything but would be just pure madness.
Thorn has always had at least one good option on the bench. Countless games when players have been tiring, he has delayed making a change until after we have gone behind and when it is then too late.
Platt was ok enough to start but Thorn subbed him at the correct time and it paid off. Taking off Deegan and eventually Clarke was correct too. Slate him when he does wrong, but I think Thorn deserves a bit of praise for his substitutions - made them at the right time and did change the game.
I have noticed with a few of our managers lately that they don't like making substitutions. Do they get docked for appearance fees used or something as they are always very hesitant to make changes until it is much too late.
If a substitution has to be made because of an injury than surely it is common sense? If Thorn made game changing substitutions off his own back then I would be more than happy to praise it
I can't remember the last time we made a change that looked as if we are going for it, when was the last time we brought off a defender for a striker on 65 minutes because we needed to get goals back? The players going off and on always seem to be like for like.
I just hope one game Thorn will go all out for it, bring off a Deegan or a Clarke and bring on a striker and go for the game when we really need it.
Firstly Nick thanks for changing the title, I was in for a world of painful sun jokes
I think Platt has played the full 90 on numerous occassions when carrying the same knock. I think AT has been unable to take him of in the past as he alternative was unfit fat freddie, Jeffers or ROD.
I think this time he came off as AT had options. ie a 95 % fit CODY
Also Deegs was a big call to remove as he does pop up in the box and gets shots off.
