I can't believe anyone falls for the rubbish they put in their press releases.

How can they go on about a Sports Village and community facilities when there will be a net loss in facilities available to the public. Wasps have already said their facilities will be, in the main, specialist and not suitable for community use.

Then they bang on about how they promised to keep a 50m pool. So are they saying this was the plan all along as when they announced the closure of the one in town they claimed it wasn't needed. Turned out the chap in charge, forget his name, hadn't even bothered to read the report!

And of course they're claiming the existing pool and sports centre has to close because of running costs yet are spending £16.9m on a pool at Higgs (how much of that will be diverted to pay for Wasps facility?), £7.9m on a pool at AT7 and £36.7 on the replacement pool in the city centre. How many years running costs would that cover?

If anyone doesn't believe its a foregone conclusion that we will lose out indoor facility at Higgs they need their head examined.

CCC 2016 said:
The pool would be built on the site of the Centre’s indoor football pitch and keeps a promise the Council made in 2014 to do all it could to keep a 50m pool within the city.
CCC 2015 said:
The authority also said it would continue to support the ASA in its search for an alternative site but that the emphasis should not be on Coventry alone to supply a facility for the entire West Midlands region.

Amazing how £10.5m can be found for an olympic pool in this times of crippling austerity. How does the £10.5m new build cost compare with refurbishment of the existing one?
CT said:
In 2014, councillors voted unanimously to close that site down citing running costs of £2,000 a day.
Now of course running costs are a bit misleading as the new facilities will also incur running costs but even if we ignore that the council are saying the cost for retaining Fairfax St is £730K a year. They are spending £36.7 on the replacement pool in the city centre, £16.9m at Higgs and £7.9m at AT7. That would keep Fairfax Street open for over 80 years.

I'm not a swimmer, so that is a whole lot of money I'd rather be spent on something more useful, I especially don't see the need for yet another pool at the Higgs AND the thing in the town.

Doesn't really add up but I reckon your considerations are over simplistic, it is 50 years since the old baths opened and they need a major revamp, not just maintenance.

I imagine they've already 'sold' the old baths to someone.

The council officer's report into the feasibility of refurbishing the existing centre fails to take into account the additional costs at Higgs. The costs of each option are not validated - it is not clear where the projected figures have come from, no reference it made to any advice sought from consultants on the costs of each option (unless I've missed it?).

To pay for this great new facility in the city centre we're going to close 3 others down and hope that some optimistic usage projections come to fruition:

The proposed overall capital cost for Option 6b of £36.7m will be funded through Prudential Borrowing, which will be repaid by recycling savings through the closure of existing sports facilities such as Foxford School, the Arena Health and Fitness Club (Ricoh Arena), Foleshill Sports and Leisure Centre (FSLC) and the proposed closure of CSLC along with the annual surpluses generated from the operation of the new city centre destination facility.

But how much can a revamp cost? Lets be more realistic and look at a 50 year life span. That would mean the new facilities could cover 50 years running cost and have £22m left over for a refurb! Of course that's oversimplistic but are you confident the council have drilled down on the options? The chap in charge hadn't even read the prepared report!

Its already been sold to Cov Uni hasn't it but there's a limit to what they can do as its a listed building. Think they can only knock down the elephant. Will be sad to see that go to be honest. No doubt to be replaced with another generic building.

The new £36.7m building has a projected lifespan of 40 years.

They were quick out with the statement to do with ccfc afterwards ;) Get in quick before people get angry!

Wasps have told the council it is possible also for the academy to stay?

It's interesting that the new pool will be bringing:

  • A 50-metre swimming pool with eight lanes and room for 500 spectators
  • Swimming education rooms and offices
  • Moveable floors and beams to allow other sports, including water polo, to take place
  • Increased gym equipment on site from 55 to more than 100
  • Rugby development rooms and offices
  • 30 per cent increase in function room space

Odds on the gym being used by Wasps as well?

Just as well we're making sure there's top facilities for the massively popular water polo.

About £36M. :angelic: And remember the old building is worth something too, plus it is listed which brings its own problems.

Edit: Oh you've covered all that.. anyway it is clearly all stitched up.
Edit: Wasps had better be paying for the Rugby stuff in that list, if not where is the Football/Hocky/Cricket etc. development facility.

No it's been said they aren't investing in it hasn't it?

Well there is absolutely no need for that, there are too many rugby clubs in the city.

You have to laugh really. Taxpayers money being used to provide facilities for the franchise after all those posts on here about how its down to SISU and no one else to help our academy.
That's just clever wasps though!

It will probably get even more blatant going forward won't it?

Wasps will use nearly all of it, they will probably have exclusive use of the pool and other facility's at the times they request. Public and everyone else will have to cater around wasps need

If the one in town centre was too expensive to run I don't see the logic in building one in a location where even less people will use it.

Also the type of pool in the new place in town is rarely profitable yet the council are planning to use the non-existent profit to cover the losses forecast on the pool at Higgs!

Well I've sent an email to th chair of the planning committee (who is also one of my councillors as it happens) objecting to the Rugby Development rooms on the grounds that it isn't in line with the Coventry Sports Strategy 2014-2024 aim "To inspire more people in the city to take up and regularly take part in sport" because of the limited appeal of rugby, particularly to women and anyone who isn't the 'well built' sort. Plus a few other supporting points saying what sports I think is better for them to promote..

Standard really, none of them have a clue what is going on. Just put their rants on every page, for massive die hard city fans of 50 years like they all claim to be not many actually talk about football.

Just to add, I wouldn't be surprised if CSF and thr council approached wasps to ask them to build their training base their, specially so that the kicking barn can be built to make way for Swimming pool. I wouldnt be surprised of they also help Wasps access external funding in order to contribute to the barn.
