Going by other sports, I don't think they'd have any bother from teammates or people they know, just thick people on social media posting vomit gifs in response to anything with a rainbow or asking why there's no straight pride.
Tbf, I reckon the dickhead was just an insecure bully, so the problem is with himself and not you or your teammates.I play 6 a side league on Wed nights and you get some right tossers playing against you who love nothing more than to verbally wind people up, sometimes more than playing football. I got called a fat c*** a few weeks ago (14 stone which I don't think is too bad) because I skinned this guy twice and then he hacked me down. Same bloke called one of our players a homo because he was man marking him too close. If that's 6aside on a Wed night, imagine the potential insults that could be shouted from the stands. Fair play to him for doing this.
I don't have a problem with anyone being gay. What I can't comprehend is, why do they feel the need to tell everyone? Surely, their private sex lives are just that - private! I don't wish to go out and tell everyone what my particular fancies are. I will never understand this. I liken it to veggies and vegans. They just HAVE to tell people.
If by support you mean a shrug of the shoulders to indicate "like - who cares?" Then I am all for that. He dons football boots & exhibits his footballing skills. Beyond that I suspect most people really don't care. The Gay Footballer (@FootballerGay) | Twitter
Championship footballer is due to come out publicly on Wednesday according to the above Twitter account. A few people doubting whether this is genuine, but I hope it is and hope they get a lot of support.
Huge hurdle to jump but think it could be massive for other gay footballers.
If he is aware of what is being shouted from the stands he isn't focusing on the game properly (as a former pro told me a couple years ago)I play 6 a side league on Wed nights and you get some right tossers playing against you who love nothing more than to verbally wind people up, sometimes more than playing football. To me that individual should've been called out by everyone else on the pitch. Lambast them & they will shut up. If nobody says anything, they think the silence is endorsement of their behaviourTbf, I reckon the dickhead was just an insecure bully, so the problem is with himself and not you or your teammates.
Which in itself is also what you mentioned re. players coming out and ignorant cunts giving them stick for it.
Problems with some societies I guess.
I'm in the same camp of those who don't think any differently when a man comes out as gay, each to their own. A gay man is completely natural to me and that must just be how I've been brought up.
I do however disagree with those who say we don't need to know, why is there is a need to make a big song and dance about it all? I think things like this need to remain in the public eye and be celebrated all at the same time until it comes to a point that it is a social norm. The pockets of people in society that are against what should now be considered a natural thing, should be made to feel like they're the odd one out in society and that's probably only achievable through continuing the conversation.
I personally don't think it's natural. Am I a bit homophobic? Possibly. But I like think I'm just a bit old school. I don't like seeing it on tv, although I don't really like public shows of affection between men and women either. Apologies if that offends, simply being honest. I'd never discriminate based on sexuality though and equally I'd never be mean to someone who was. And a footballer? Really only interested in if they can play football. Bad that it should be a thing, what people do behind closed doors is their concern.

I'm not either but your guy definitely is. He told me when he was doing the reach around.I'm not gay, but I'm not so sure about my current boyfriend. :emoji_thinking:
Really?Now changed his mind..

Good...I wish him well. Maybe the media & public can focus on proper issues instead?Twitter account now deleted. If it was genuine there will be no announcement
A Twitter user who claimed to be an anonymous Championship footballer intending to come out as gay has appeared to reverse his decision after admitting he is “not strong enough to do this”.
Having previously declared his intention to hold a press conference on Wednesday where he would reveal his identity after a series of tweets that had detailed his experiences, the user @FootballerGay posted two messages on Tuesday evening before deleting the account which had amassed more than 50,000 followers.
“I thought I was stronger. I was wrong,” read the first, quickly followed by a more detailed explanation before the account was deleted.
“Call me all the names under the sun, belittle me and ridicule me, a lot will, and I can’t change that, but I’m not strong enough to do this. Just remember that I’ve got feelings, without coming out I can’t convince anybody otherwise, but this isn’t a hoax. I wouldn’t do that.”

My fear when this account first appeared was either a hoax or it'd just keep going as some kind of hush-hush secret player, I hope their reasons are genuine.
AgreedI think it’s a wind up
