COVENTRY City manager Andy Thorn says skipper Sammy Clingan is a key part of his plans for the coming season.
Thorn has made the Northern Ireland international his captain for the 2011/12 season and hit out at speculation about the midfielder.
"I've heard nothing on that," he said. "It's just speculation but Sammy is a massive part of what we are doing here.
"I spoke to him at length in Portugal about his role in the team and here at the club and he absolutely loves it at Coventry City.
"He's a very important player for us and that's the way it will remain. As far as I am concerned he is staying here and I have had the same assurances from the chairman that he is not for sale.
"We're preparing for the new season with Sammy Clingan as our captain."
Funny isn't it that last season due to some injuries but largely from the begining Bothroyd did not consider Clingan for the side? All that considered they knew a bit about footy disagreed with Bothroyd only accepting it as we started well. Then later in the season Bothroyd strted to use him sparodically and quite insultingly. He showed glimpses of why he should have been there all along but guess what we slumped and Bothroyd was fired!
AT like us knows this player and his capabilities which he showed in the last few games.
Yes a very good player at this level and will run the midfield this season during many games and likely get a few on target from distance.
There is no way AT will want him to leave and he has his budget so that means he does not have to go.
Pity about the Liverpool lad but as I said b4 there are a few prem loanees on the horizon - first choice has failed. Wonder who the next target is?
i remain optimistic.
Are we going to maybe start thinking about offering him and Martin Cranie new contracts then? Have we not learnt from the King/Westwood/Gunnarsson sagas?!
No, they haven't learnt a thing. Do you really think they'll still be here by then anyway? Christ I hope not.
Btw Brodys position being bigged up as a key shareholder by Clouting isn't getting as much attention as I thought..just how much is he calling the shots, our Mr Openess (April-May 2011).
