I think the last few games will define whether Thorn gets the manager's job or not. There are key games in there for various teams and so the games will be tougher than they look on paper ie Millwall, Scunthorpe - one may need a point or two for survival and the other the same for a play off berth. If Thorn has a chance of getting the job then these two games are great examples for him to win and make his point.

I agree, its been a welcome surprise to see Andy take the position that he has especially making the unusual step up from cheif scout. I have only managed to see them when they played at home to Watford but was really impressed by the change of attitude in all of the players and the drive to push on and get the second and not just sit back and invite pressure. It appears as though there was a five minute lapse on Saturday or we would have got that difficult away win which would instill a lot of confidence in the team. It is worth noting that we have scored five away from home in three games and taken the lead twice but you have to view Saturday as two points dropped.
Millwall will come at us with everything they have as they are chasing a playoff spot but as long we can get the ball down and control the play we can easily match what they have and have a good chance of another home win.
As for 'Sc-Unithorpe'... Let's take it one game at a time.

So what is your view on the thread topic? Do we wait until 10 games into next season and then appoint a new manager, or appoint one now?

IMO Thorn deserves a shot at it, we are playing better, the players we have (since we have no money for new blood, this may be vital!) seem to respond to him and what we are trying to do.
I like what i have seen, maybe if we had buckets of cash to spend then , yes get a "big" name in, but we haven't so maybe we have nothing to lose and all to gain.

If we keep playing well untill the end of the season he should be given the job on a 1 year rolling contract.

Worth a shot definitely but we shouldn't put too much emphasis on this season. We are safe(ish) now and should be playing with a little more freedom, but equally we can't expect miracles from a side that have come off teh back of te kind of run we have been on.

There is a complete change in the style of football which will take time and a full pre-season to come. Nothing can be judged properly until next season. Give him a one year deal now as he will be cheap regardless. He can assess what he has, what's available and what is required. This offers both sides a chance to look at eachother with a promised review for a three year deal if things are going well by Christmas.

In addition it will give the players and the potential signings a bit more of a sense of stability. Whilst we stay in limbo there is not a chance that out of contract players will re-sign. I know its unlikely, in some cases won't change anything but tying the manager down might help.

Dont think they will offer anything just yet and if I was advising AT I would say wait see what happens in the summer.

He has got the team playing better football and all credit to him. Has done a good job so far. We look good going forward and entertaining, although defensively not so clever but we have a lot of injuries in that department. However a big chunk of the squad are potentially on their way come 31st May and if i were him I would want to know the plans the Board have for the club and squad. He needs to know what he will have to work with so he can get new players in. Unlikely to know that before the end of the season, and on past experience it is unlikely to be very clear even by the start of next season.

What AT has done so far hasnt done himself any harm and if he can continue it then he could represent very good value for money as the next manager. It is afterall all about the finances at CCFC what ever decision is made.

I'd give him the job for sure. He's been a breath of fresh air, and speaks more sense than any manager since Snoz-or at least Eric Black.
But the uncertainty over the clubs future is massive. Will SISU still be here? Will the club? Will they want to bring someone else in? Who knows, but I do fear he'll be ditched despite the results he's achieving simply due to a lack of managerial experience. Any other owner may want their own man. Unless those owners are RR/GH, in which case he must have a chance of getting it!

take a deep breath and relax mate, you've just wasted all that nervous energy on someone who thinks Thorn should probably get the job and is tired of big names My point as Rob mentioned after I posted was that it is difficult to draw conclusions from the rest of this season. No pressure on players now unlike mid season. Thorn or whoever can only be judged after 10 games of next year when the team is back in a competetive situation. The interesting but impossible to recreate scenario would have been whether these players under Thorn in December/January would have buckled under pressure so badly and consistantly

I'd just change his contract from Scout to Manager. My employees changed my contract from Designer to Senior Designer. All other terms are the same. Why offer him anything other than he is already on? It's just a change of role within his current employment. As chief Scout this is his team, so it should all be clicking for him as it has.

Has he got his badges? If not whats the legislation on this?

I would have a word mate, seems like you got done over. Adding a 'Senior' to the front of your existing job title suggests a promotion in position especially if there is someone who has taken your old role of 'Designer'. This would be the same at City if Thorne was to be given the permanent manager's job it would be based on an application to the club with the motive of earning more money for caryying an extra responsibility in his new role.

No one did come in and replace me as designer. It's just a role change to indicate experience.

I find it strange that Football works in a different way to normal business. Right AT we are going to promote you to manager. You will be on £50 a week instead of £25. Sorted. Whats the problem with that?

I am sorry Rich, but I strongly have to disagree. If Andy Thorne is successful in obtaining the Manager's job on a full time basis it will be based upon his performance and will merit his new job and subsequent pay increase. I can't imagine for one second that anyone gets paid the same as their manager except in football which is different as a lot of players earn significantly more. Is this the point you were making?

Bamalam, thats what i said. Leave his contract the same. Give him a pay rise and change the job title. Why dick around with the likes of a 5 year contract for an as yet unproven inexperienced manager. Leave scope to put him back down to scout.

AT will keep job until summer no matter what. Assuming he keeps us up he will be given the job, not because he is the right man for the job or knows football inside out etc but simply because he would be the cheapest option. Wouldn't be surprised to see Harrison go as I am sure he is on decent money and could be replaced by someone cheaper on the premise that AT wants his own man. Whether AT will have a team to manage is another matter. Ireland, Keogh, McPake, Cameron, Hussey, Bell, McSheffrey, Clarke, Deegan, Platt, O'Donovan hardly gets the blood racing as a prospect.

I'm really not sure who else would want this job we don't have money, a stadium and god knows what class of players we'll have on the books next season. I guess the only perk of being the manager of Coventry City is that you work for 9 months and get paid for 3 years with a good chance of being on sky tv afterwards. Thorne has done a great job in the last few games and has almost dragged us out of a relegation battle and got us playing some decent football so I think he should be seriously considered as a candidate for manager.

i wasn't having a pop fella.....just pointing out we are a bit catch 22!!! we can either judge him now, or just go with a new manager. I feel most like you and I then, would be happy for him to be given a shot.

I definitely think a "name" manager will achieve nothing Smiley as per Dowie, Coleman, Boothroyd. I am more and more convinced these days that managers are just figureheads/fall guys and have very little effect on results/success. Money is the key factor and as we know that it is in short supply employing a big time Charlie with no funds for the team seems pointless

Hello to everyone, i'm over from the soon to be defunct 606 site and looking for a new site, and i've noticed that a few other 606's on here, oldskyblue and smileycov who i recognise,so a special hello to them.
Anyway back to my opinion, i feel this summer is the most important in our recent history if not ever.We musy get the ownership sorted once and for all as we can not move on with out either SISU comitting themselves financially,putting the money in to buy a share of the stadium and a few million for the squad,or else sell but sell now, so a new owner, who hopefully knows and loves this club as much as we do, can come in and make this club great again.
The Ricoh i beleive can be very profitable if run right,the location with a train station would make money and with a successful team with average crowds of midtwenties, would bring Premiership football back, earning a slice of the untold millions that brings.
Personally i can't wait for the summer as i feel there is someone out there who will come in,an Hoffman consortium has been mentioned which would be my choice, but we don't know if he can get the money together, but the Ranson resignation i think was a very important move as i see them working together again in the future.I just hope and pray that either way our future will have a planned out path for the next 4-5 years instead of all the chaos at the moment.
