It is hard to understand because you're making a statement with no explanation. 'He's been crap. He's useless'. What was? The free headers he missed? The one on ones he failed to convert? The times he failed to slip his team mates clean through?

I know what you mean

But the opening period last night was desperately bad, and for the first time in all my years not even up to Football League standard IMO. We were getting played off the park by Shrewsbury. I looked around at that empty stadium and the clueless rubbish being served up on the pitch, and honestly felt like crying.

Second half was OK though.

Yes and you have seen the Grand total of 120 minutes from him? He might well turn out to be shit, but he needs to be given a chance. So many times in football. players a written off as shit before being given a chance

I'd be the first to admin Biamou doesn't look up to scratch yet but he's in his first few minutes of league football. Give him a few months of sub appearances and training time and he may well become a decent asset.

Of course It IS too early to wright him off, he may well settle and become a valued member of the squad.
But having said that, he hasn't exactly helped his cause by not breaking sweat when given the brief chance he's had. And if we were scoring for fun, he wouldn't be mentioned at all.
He will get another chance, but he has to put a shift in as people's patience will not last forever, especially when he's taking a place on the bench ahead of Ponticelli.

From MR's post match interview last night he seemed to pretty much rule out getting another striker basically saying that the issue was service to the strikers we already have.

At present, I agree with MR. The strikers should score some goals at this level, given previous record of some. But, if we aren't playing to their strengths, we are going to struggle.
I think most can see the gap between the forward line and midfield, hoofing to a lone striker isn't working with our current strikers and we can play well with ball at feet, but not yet cutting through teams consistently.

so,in summary, after 26 posts, we need

a CB for cover
a striker as Biamou is no good
a winger as we only have one

people do know we are down to our last 4 goalkeepers. what if 3 of them get injured.

The little I’ve seen of us we’ve had trouble linking play and stretching the game. I’d rather see Andreu pulled back to midfield and some pace on the wing I think, but not seen enough of Nazon to know if he could do a job there. Even if he can, if Jodi or him are off form we don’t look like unlocking defences.

I’d still like to see Thomas given a run as well before we give up on him

Pompey progress in potential Davies and Smith sales

Apparently we'll be paying a fee. I know it'll only be a minimal one but think if we do have a little bit of money surely a wide player is more of a priority?

Could be, for him to suddenly be going after a CB.

Either that or McDonald is badly injured.

Willis out with Davies and Baker coming in would be a good trade off I reckon.

Wouldn't mind that too much, still not sure if we will bother with Baker.

Reading this thread does highlight some imbalances in the squad.

4 goalkeepers - (all a bit suspect)
6 strikers - (all a bit suspect)
1 main winger - (who we know is a bit suspect)

Losing Willis, RCC + a striker on loan would be fine if we bought in Davies, Baker and another goal threat.

CM does worry me a bit too...

Has to be the case, cannot imagine why there would be such a shift in our transfer activities at this stage and even with reports are we're paying a fee otherwise it don't add up.

With Willis likely off things add up and make sense why we'd be paying a fee.

That would give us 5 possible central defenders.
Mcdonald, Hyam, Pearson and Davis. With Stokes available to cover.

If fit I'd start Thomas upfront with McNulty on Saturday. Ponticelli or Nazon on the bench.

As said we don't have the luxury of just being able to endlessly sign players until it clicks.

Benno was class on CWR last night. Not sure what his live match commentary was like but he made the drive to and from the game entertaining.

It made a difference last night when Andreu played more midfield second half and started linking play up. Might be his best position for us based on last night.

More worried about Davies for Willis. Davies has played less than 60 games in 5 years - is he really going to be better than Willis - no. OK, if we need funds, Willis is one of the few who can bring some in...but is his replacement up to much?
I don't know much about Davies whereas Willis is a good player at this level (and league one).

Willis has been rather injury prone.

Not only injury prone, his record when in the team must be pretty shocking. Our best periods over the last few years were when Robins was here first and he rarely played and the first half of Mowbray's first full year when he was injured.

I think it's a bit premature to be saying we 'need' a striker... We have 4 senior strikers plus Ponticelli. I think (and hope) things will improve: McNulty has 2 goals now in 5 games, that's a good ratio (fair enough 1 is a penalty). You've got Kwame Thomas and Ponticelli in fine form for the U23s and if that continues, they'll get a shot.

I'm not going to press the panic button yet as a lot of us have.

I don't quite get how people are saying bring a new striker in and yet at the same time asking why Ponticelli isn't getting any game time.

It works though. Both statements suggest the strikers playing now aren't good enough. Not that I agree.

Gilbert will be locking his felt tips in his desk draw now so if anything's going to happen today then it'll be soon.

He does that every day though in order to stop self harming or have someone's eye out.
