Saddlers manager Jon Whitney, who earlier revealed that he hopes to complete two new signings by the end of the week, has insisted that one of the new recruits will not be Coventry City defender Jordan Turnbull, playing down the recent rumours linking the 22-year-old with a summer switch.
Speaking via the Express & Star, Jon admitted that the ex-Southampton youth player has been a target in the past, but is not on his radar this summer, he said; "He is somebody I have looked at in the past but he is not a target this year.
"I was looking at him in January but Coventry paid money for him to sign him from Southampton and gave him a really good contract. I do like him. But he isn’t one of my primary targets."

Hard reading that is, Coventry paid money for him to sign him from Southampton and gave him a really good contract.
Sums up the summer window and how things started to go badly wrong in recruitment and types of characters we were able to bring in.

Much of what you say is bollocks, but this is not.if turnbull goes fine,but if he stays give him a chance. hes young and lots of players improve in their 2nd season

its as if we didnt have a scouting infrastructure in place last season.........Looks like he played his standard 2 good games against us when we seemed to scout him. Maybe if we did of scout him over a few games we may not of signed him and offered him a good contract to quote the Walsall manager.

For arguments sake, if Turnbull wasn't in fact a panic buy, then judging by those quotes it seems to me that TM and Venus had no intention of having him in the starting lineup week in, week out. But instead looked to use him sporadically and work on his all-round abilities as a CB for seasons to come.
Therefore, it could be argued that his inclusion in the starting xi was consequently due to Mowbray's continuous transfer targets falling through. Both TM and MV had no choice but to throw Turnbull into the deep end and hope he recreated the form that saw him help Swindon into the top 6 the season before last.
Either way if Turnbull was a panic buy or not, Mowbray ballsed up in the transfer window.
I see your point but I think he was signed with a view to being a main player at the back, plus majority of the signings had fallen away when we signed him on the 15th August. So was quite late in the window to say we will get him to be stronger in a year time as he was fairly experienced in league one
It's fair to say recruitment in the window was very wrong and also didn't go to plan.

Irrespective of how he fit into Mowbray's plans last season I'm disappointed how he's performed, as every CCFC fan is. Despite my hammering of his abilities I do think there's a solid player in there somewhere but I think he needs to discover that with another team. I'd rather count our losses on the transfer fee and free up wages for another CB to come in.
At the moment McDonald is our only CB thats guaranteed to stay, so Robins needs to seriously look to this department to make sure we don't once again leak goals for fun.
I agree there's is a player in him, there has to be. Like yourself he really disappointed me and I personally don't think he's what we need to go 46 or 49 games in league two. He's ability that will possibly shine in a better settled side who's seasons going well in a team where there are better physical commanding players around him but to go into league two I don't think he has it in his locker. The physical side to his game ain't there to roll up his sleeves and battle. Not physically strong enough for me and to easily brushed aside last year, head seemed to drop all too soon and made silly errors to put us under pressure again.

That's the main worry I have if he stays next season; how little it takes for his head to drop in a game. I heard rumours that Venus detested Turnbull's attitude but was forced to play him because there was simply no one else.
Another worry is the fact that there is no part of his game that makes me sit back and think, 'wow, he could seriously do a job for us in this scenario'. For instance, Reda Johnson was a rogue at times but his clearances and threatening presence in set pieces were the best in League One by a country mile. Whereas, Turnbull's qualities he showed last season ranged from below-average to outright atrocious. I think we need a commanding CB to be brought in otherwise our defence will be as light-weight as it was last season. (Like an Ian Evatt for Chesterfield). The lack of leadership arguably is what lead Turnbull to many of his mistakes as he's clearly a player that needs to be directed. This due to the simple fact that he hasn't got a football brain. Maybe with someone like this beside him he could turn into the player we all believed he was capable to be.....

If we don't we could end up at worse case with a back 5 made up of potentially 4 of the mainstays of last years defence.

We need to freshen up our back line next season in my opinion. I would keep Willis and Stokes as they are obviously the most solid of the four - however it is unlikely Willis will stay next season.
I'm not sure how much McDonald will feature next year, my opinion is he'll be a third choice CB, presuming we play a flat back four.
As much as I enjoyed watching DKE play last term, I do think we need another RB to come in. Although he has talent, I still think he's one season away from earning that starting spot. I'd much prefer if another experienced head came in to give DKE that drive to push on. Hoping Michael Smith signs but that's increasingly looking unlikely as the days go on.
As stated above it's the players decision to stay or go and if he goes then I wish him well and trust in the manager to fill the position he vacates.Should be gone by Monday.
Reid doesn't have a clause but says he has a gentlemans agreement to leave from last summer should we get relegated.

Turnbull didn't impress but as others have said he got better as the season went on and it's almost impossible to judge him alone as he was partnered by weakness all season. Or was he the weak link?
Mowbray, Venus and Slade couldn't get a performance out of him but Robins improved the organization at the back and he looked better for it.

Nathan Clarke could have done that job.If he goes hope we get someone late 20s early 30s who knows the division and can lead the back line.
