Ha ha - goalless! I’d better not quit my day job. I’m clearly no Dale Evans!Love a bet on U23 - there tends to be a fair few goals across the whole league - although it is dangerous to bet on an outright winner as you never really know how many 1st team players are fielded
Jason Farndon admitted that his strong Coventry City Under-23s side should have beaten Millwall at the Ricoh Arena.
The Sky Blues played out a disappointing goalless draw with the Lions despite fielding an experienced team with several players with first team minutes under their belts.
“We are definitely not happy with the performance,” said the development squad coach, reflecting on the game that included twins Dion and Devon Kelly-Evans playing as wing-backs, a back three of Dominic Hyam, Tom Davies and Chris Stokes, Ben Stevenson in midfield and Max Biamou leading the line up front.
“I felt the game was very slow and pedestrian and we didn’t quicken it up enough in the final third.
“We didn’t pose enough of a threat which is unlike us in the Under-23s where you don’t tend to get many nil, nils.
“We’re happy with the nil; I thought the back three defended really well. They didn’t have a lot to do but they stayed switched on and did things properly.”
He added: “It was a little bit different having more seniors than usual but we expect the same things and the gaffer was at the game so it was important they did well and it was a chance to get some minutes on the pitch. However, the team we put out we expected a victory.
“Millwall were very organised and came to frustrate us and I think they did. I don’t think we showed enough speed and bravery in the box.
“We had a good chat about it afterwards about being braver in and out of possession.”
As for the wing-backs system, Farndon believes it’s a formation that the first team and Under-23s can play comfortably if and when required.
“The 23s are always difficult because it depends what the manager wants to play in terms of giving first teamers minutes,” he said.
“We played with one up front and a little box behind but yes I think it is a system that can work.
Mixed emotions for me on this one. My Cov supporting son plays in the Villa team. They threw it away tbh. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
Never a bad thing to beat Villa!
Laugh obviously.Mixed emotions for me on this one. My Cov supporting son plays in the Villa team. They threw it away tbh. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry!
There's a few on there I am hoping will really shine, including Camwell, DKE, Stevenson, Bayliss, Finn and Sayoud.
Kyle Finn is a winger. Shame he's not yet quite pushing for a starting place in the first team. We could really do with a tricky winger to complement Jones on the other side.
Fouvi has scored already, does he count as an ex player?!
Ps does anyone have the team line up from when we played Arsenal in yth cup a few years back
Are Jak Hickman and Chris Camwell back from their loans then?
.. and both lads former North Leamington School pupils. Viva Leamingtonia!!Jack Burroughs becomes the second 16-year-old to score for the U23s this season. Kyle Finn played as a false nine today with no other options, new position for him but got his goal.
