We are apparently in the hunt for 3 new players, which if true is good however whoever we sign needs to be available immediately to play none of this will need to plays 2 or 3 U21s to get them " up to speed" bunkum

We have enough old heads now, ability and fitness now has to be top of the list.

That's one of my concerns over some of the signings, and I emphasise the word 'some'. But if you look at Cole, Hunt, even MAF, they don't have age in their favour and their fitness or lack of it has shown when they've played. Whilst Cole is lasting longer in games, he's still visibly puffing along after 20-30 mins.

But I too hope players that are brought in are ready to go from the off, but also think this length into a season, I think all players will come when not 100% (unless they are returning from a loan deal, or have only just fallen out of favour with their parent club)

Ability and fitness while fitting into a place is top priority. Age shouldn't come into it. Armstrong is the best striker we have at our club and the best player we have also seen at our club for many years was also about the oldest.

Completely agree Rupert.

Experience is good, but we now have too many 30+ year olds, and seem to keep signing them. Look at Bristol last season, they only had 2 - wilbrahams and wade Elliot. The rest we're all mainly in their early to mid 20's.

Yep. Pointless if it takes them 3 or 4 weeks to get up to speed. By then our season could be all but over.

We need players who can come straight in and make a difference.

Don't know what it is with modern day players and managers come to that, I can go back a few years and remember Bill Glazier signing on the day of a match v Portsmouth away, starred in a 2-0 victory, George Hudson hat-trick on debut, George Kirby the same, Chris Cattlin signed from second division Huddersfield made debut v reigning champions Manchester United and marked George Best out the game, David Cross 2 goals on his debut v Sheffield. United, Mick Quinn same v Man City, Dublin scored at QPR on his debut there are plenty of others yet in this modern age of so called fitter than ever footballers new players don't even make the bench for a fortnight. Perhaps I'm a bit old fashioned but I could never imagine a new player telling the likes of Matt Busby, Bill Shankly or Brisn Clough he needed two weeks to get "up to speed"

As we've been watching the City and football for about the same length of time,I have had this discussion with other fans many times as I too have said modern footballers are supposed to be fitter etc than ever before, but how come many always seem to be injured or unfit ? Look at Sturridge at Liverpool he hardly plays and just the slightest twinge he tells his manager he's not fit,can you imagine players from years back saying that to Shankly or Paisley ? We know the answer he would of got back !

Football is a lot more athletic these days and there is much more physical exursion. It's quicker and faster.

Fair assumption but let's face it football isn't really a contact sport anymore, but it was in the 60's/70's but most players just accepted it and I can't recall players being out as much as they are now.I'm certain of one thing though footballers were tougher back then than now !

Certain injuries would finish your career though, that you come back from nowadays.

Sorry Otis but with respect that is tripe, did you ever see George Best ? Name a quicker player than him today or a faster striker than Jimmy Greaves or Gary Lineker or Ian Rush or Ian Wright or Dwight York I've covered about 40 years there. It is attitude nothing else.

The players are fitter. No doubt about it. Not just talking about quick off the mark, talking about sustained pace over a substantial part of the game.

George Best could be very, very lazy and he wasn't fit a lot of the time, something he has admitted to himself.

The game is faster today than it ever was.

Yes but football is a non contact sport these days isn't it ? So how come many are nackered and unfit so often ?

I don't know the answer but if you look at old videos (70's and 80's) you can clearly see that players back then were much much slimmer. The difference is quite shocking when you compare with today. Maybe it is the extra weight they are carrying around now?
