I don't think it's about the formation ..it's about having the players to play in the formation..we seriously lack quality and it shows game after game

In my view you have to base the formation on the players available. You also have to take into account the formation of the opposition and you need to be able to switch formations during a game.
We seem to be particularly bad in all these respects. SP also appears very poor at making appropriate and timely substitutions. If you are 2-0 down and have not had a single shot on goal, you need to make a change immediately or at the very latest at half-time.

Absolutely no idea LAST. We don't really have the right set of midfielders or indeed 2 wingers for 442 or 451 variant. Before Madison got sent off I would have probably gone with a diamond on Sunday with 2 up top....

I'm a big fan of 4-3-3 and think we have a team that could suit it.

With a 4-3-3 you can pack the midfield, more so than in 4-4-2. As well as that, you get the 3 up front. Some teams who play the formation, like Arsenal, play with wingers, but it can be done with 3 central strikers.

Although I do belive Reda Johnson is a decent left back, Haynes would likely be the preferred man for that job. He's a decent attacking outlet.
On the other side I'd probably choose Phillips when fit.

If both full backs push on, then one or two of the midfielders can drop a little deeper to protect the back four.

We do have one or two relatively pacey strikers. Simeon Jackson and Nouble could play the 'wide' positions up front, but they wouldn't be wingers.

Our formation is so defensive at the moment. With 4-5-1 we have resulted in a more direct, 'hoofball' approach. Pressley has to change it immediately!

Jackson could probably do a job, but nouble not chance. Watch the big sides that play that formation those two 'wide' players have to get up and down the pitch to help the fullbacks. It's still square pegs round hole. I can't think of any teams that play 3 strikers in that role.

Madine will continue to be isolated. He needs someone with him, playing off him.

O'brien holding saf in front of the back 4 his work rate is excellent can easily link the defence to attack

Willis right back, Pennington for me was shown to look like a semi pro yesterday and is to unsure of himself. Personally id like to see Clarke back but I think Willis is solid enough there for now

Thomas and fleck in the middle, for all the hate Thomas gets I think it's undeserved yes he went through a poor run of form but one thing he is is calm and composed on the ball doesn't have the attacking brain of fleck but that would compliment well in the middle

Maddison and Jackson, the wings are the problem in this formation, I think Maddison seems to run into brick walls a lot of the time in the middle and he has to pace to get at people which being on the wing he will get more chances to beat people 1 on 1 he also has a decent delivery from corners so crossing should be on point. Jackson on the other side it may not be comfortable place for him but his pace alone will see him create chances also has the technical ability to pick out the man in the middle

Madine up top work rate is fantastic and heading ability in abundance just lacking the supply at the minute but with two wingers we should be able to provide more for him with Jackson and Maddison cutting in at times as well.


This firmation requires 100% effort and work rate from the players which at the minute we aren't getting but I think Jim will cover any gaps that high wingers leave in the defensive phases


What we need
If we used this formation we need to bring in 2 wingers a centre midfielder a goalkeepers a right back and a centre back

Even our players ought to be able to understand how to play 4 - 4 -2 which would save them being bemused by listening to a Presley tactical masterclass every week. You need pace in your team to play anything else and we dont have any. And please leave Fleck and Webster out.

I think we should normally go 4-4-2 tbh it worked ok last year - however would like us just to go for it and play 4-3-3 against Chesterfield
to see what happens. Bearing in mind injuries/suspensions this is how I would line up.

Playing with one striker is ok if you have pace in the middle of the park to come on to the ball, we don't. Elvis needs to get support up top with Madine else we will never score goals. This league is direct and unless we get with the programme quick and find a style that suits our players then league 2 will happen. If he plays one up top tomorrow and we loose then I think the writing is on the wall.

Sorry guys but Nouble doesn't play off anyone, he certainly doesn't make off the ball runs in behind the defence, he likes to drop deep to get the ball to turn and run.

Stupot I am not a fan of Nouble mainly due to his inconsistency but if he puts effort in then would/could work.....from watching him he seems to naturally drift out to right anyway. Arguably you could put Nouble as target man and switch with Madine......but would still start off the other way. Having said all this Pressley will never be ambitious enough to try my formation anyhow!! Please Please Please let's play at least two up there though!!!

I'd be happy with that lineup

With Pressley's negative tactics I don't think it matters.
We need players that can beat players and midfielders that look forward rather than backwards.

We lack any real sort of pace in this squad other than Simeon. Felt yesterday we needed wingers. Fleck and JOB cut into the middle too often. It was crowded in the middle and it was the same during the game vs Fleetwood too. Haynes and Pennington don't get forward enough, when they do they rarely attempt a cross. In Penningtons defence yesterday, every time he got in the position out wide Barton took 5 seconds to play the pass, at which point they had two players come to close him down.

I would like to see us use a winning formation.
