The problem with choosing Coleman is we look back at the squad with rose tinted spectacles. Yes a lot went on to bigger and better things but they didn't all peak at the same time. E.g Dann and fox had left before Best's immense half a season, turner peaked under Boothroyd, plus can any championship side with a midfield of Doyle, Hughes, bell and clingan...Osborne/Stephen wright at right back, etc really that good enough for pushing for promotion?

I can only respectfully disagree. Boro had a good defence (Ehiogu, Vickers, Cooper) and Boksic. Leicester, though never a location for superstars, still had a tidy squad (Izzet, Guppy, Elliott, Savage et al). Everton similarly had B- players all-around, from Weir and Watson and Xavier to Ferguson and Campbell upfront. Sunderland finished seventh, so it's tough to dispute the balance of their squad.

Which is not to say any of those teams were much better than CCFC, but we had a weak defence and only Bellamy upfront. Maybe if Hartson had been signed earlier...but there was always the feeling the club had gone too far. Dublin, Keane, McAllister, Huckerby, Whelan and Nilsson were tough acts to replace.

What game was that? I imagine that it was a 442 with Eastwood playing left wing. Look at the bench. It's shit, nowhere near good enough for 6th. A back 4 containing wright, turner and hall not good enough for too 6, a midfield of then Doyle, boozy and Eastwood not footed enough for top 6. Morrison was on the decline,

That's my point they all weren't at their peak and good enough at the same time. For example turner was what 18-19 still full of mistakes back then, the majority of fans thought he was carol and he didn't show his quality for another 2 years until Boothroyd was here. best 2 didn't hot his peak until the next season. Gunnar was still young and green and having a tricky second season, Henderson was only 18 and only played 10 league games so hardly fair to point to him in terms of the performance of a seasons squad.

No, it wasn't. The midfield was shite, the 'squad' wasn't good enough and the squad sorely missed any pace and any real leaders.

Only Dann has gone on to have a decent PL career, the rest have proved not quite good enough. Good teams are the sum of its parts with the right blend of attributes, we had some good young potential talent, but collectively there wasn't another quality or the right attributes for a promotion push.

Nope....for a start Tabb and Henderson never played in the same side, Clarke was 17 years old and isn't a wingback, still no pace no leadership, turner was still a bit of a calamity back then. And you've got 2 strikers who at that time struggled to score much more than 10 goals each. Where would the other goals come from? And who's on the bench?

At least we know we why dongle likes thorn - they are both seriously clueless. How the hell would that team be in the top 6. Tab always faltered to deceive, Doyle is a Teague one chuffer, Morrison was awful, fox has never been rated by fans anywhere but here, ward was frozen out and wood was preferred, turner was frequently slagged off on here and Clarke 6 years on looks out of his depth in league 1.

Hmm Thorn was pretty bad should never have been relegated from Championshion imo with resources......Atkinson for us was pretty crap too......overall winner yep would say Coleman overall but we have had some stinkers!!

I think it should have been capable of pushing for the top half at least.

You point to some players and say they weren't good enough which you are right, but its just another indication of how Coleman pissed away our resources. 1.2 million on Eastwood, Morrison and Wright among the highest earners. More transfer fees down the drain on players like Bell, Clingan, Wood, Mcpake

Coleman was a dreadful manager, but he also put together an awful squad.

The problem was with all the Sisu/Ranson/Coleman mass love in at the time every player signed at the time was supposedly much better than what we had before,

All "Got to build his own team", "Players need to fit the profile" stuff.

Dann was(and is) genuinely good,as was Westwood Fox was good at our level, as was Best. Turner a good young player, but not really good enough for the top level, same with Best, Tabb and Ward. Mifsud also a very good shout in the Championship.

None of the above(apaer from Westwood) of course were Coleman signings, and were relpaced by increasingly less good players, despite many saying that that they were great, Ranson saying that Wood and Hussey would be as good as, if not better than Fox and Dann a particularly memeorable statement from the "football man".

Eastwood, Baker, McPake, Bell, Deegan, Clingan, Boozy, off the top of my head, were dreadful Championship players, and certainly no better than what we had before.

Our fabled triumverate of Ranson("Football man"), Coleman("Best young manager outside the Premiership"), amd Thorn("Top scout"), were huge failures and spunked away an awful lot of money whilst doing so.

I would say that Colemans team should at least have made the play offs, as for relegation from the prem we survived on many occasions on the last day with a few managers.
Our luck just ran out.
