Why do fans need a scapegoat..... (3 Viewers)

Telfer, Bothroyd, Best, Hall, Gray, Doyle, McIndoe, Platt and more recently Eastwood, why do fans, and I'm sure it's all clubs not just us, need to single someone out for abuse?

Cheered off, boo'd on, criticised for a mistake other players get forgiven for, singled out as the weak link in every defeat...

I find it so short sighted and childish but it seems as one leaves there's a rush to nominate the next. It's like fans love to have a go at someone, surely there's eleven new faces in a different colour every week to aim it at.

Is the player likely to improve with a few thousand critics greeting his every touch? The other players will notice this and know they could be next, then we scream loyalty at contracts end.

Maybe it's a case of silent majority like on forums and radio phone ins but still gets my back up. A guy behind me slags of Freddie but is the first out his seat when he scores! Lol

You hve a point. I went up to a few games last season and there seemed to be a Jordan Clarke lynch mob around me. Nothing but criticism everytime he was involved, and yet when King made a mistake it wasnt even tutted at!

Its quite simple... You have just listed, with probably to exception of best who I have a big fan of, some of the worst football players I have ever had to whitness playing. When people around me pay the money they work hard for to go see that kind of crap play I think they are more than justified in voicing their dissatisfaction. If you went to a concert or a play and the standard of acting was very poor you would boo and football should be no different. Another rant over haha

I think fans do it due to there attitude most of them you have said, had/have a awful workrate or are lazy...

Some fans treatment of some of those players is a joke. Fair enough have a go when someone is clearly talented but just not putting the effort. But when someone gives all they have, even if they're a bit limited technically, then they should be applauded.

I 100% agree with your reason for disliking a player as attitude is my pet hate, but I think of that list, being lazy can not really be attributed to McIndoe, Hall, Telfer Doyle or Platt. I'm not particularly a big fan of any of those, although I do think McIndoe was better than he was given credit for, however all five work(ed) hard imo. Best, Eastwood, Gray and many others down the years have been lazy and I can't tolerate that.

I also think we (rightly) give more time to our own product, which is why I'm particularly disappointed when people have a go at soemone like Clarke who has made mistakes and will do so again, but imo is a real promising prospect and I hope he achieves things with us ratehr than someone else. I find it irritating when people have a go at kids like that. I can understand too why they are kess patient on more expensive and overpaid imports like Freddie who are helping to suck a poor club dry and not giving everything they have back to the side.

Do we think he'll care when sat in his £1m caravan in three years time if the City go bust?

People are slagging off the performance they're watching though, in the heat of the moment if clarke makes a clanger you dont just think ah he'll be quality in a few years and don't rant during the game, you want the best available player in the team at the time.

You would have a point if everytime ANY player did the same thing thwy got the same response but they dont. Some players are bulletproof with fans and some are far from it thats the difference.

To be fair... Ben Turner was becoming that player up until last season!! I have a feeling that if he starts the way he started last season, he will also become "bulletproof"

Sammy, towards the end of last season was dropping some right clangers but still remains a firm fans favourite and even become our captain... not that I dislike Clingan, quite the opposite.

Plus... it's human nature to have a pantomime villain. If you direct all that tension and frustration at one singular player, psychologically, the rest of the team don't seem so bad. It's interesting someone should mention Telfer. I remember hurling some right old abuse at him and being absolutely gobsmacked when Strachan signed him on two more occasions... but looking back... what a hard worker, and when whatever it was he did came together... boy did it come together!! Especially for a bloke who doesn't really like football!!

Oooo it feels good to be on a forum again!!

This is entirely my experience, too. McSheffrey has a mob who hate him too. Can't wait to see them both stuff those so-called supporters words down their mouths next season.

The way the chav King worshipers forgave his every error almost made he happy when he didn't re-sign, for all that we'll miss his goals.

Never understood the logic of booing your own team to be honest. A bit like punching yourself in the face.

Ah well, guess some people would rather have a whinge and feel superior than watch a winning team. Is annoying when you want the team to win and you're drowned out by dickheads booing every mistake.

It is mad. Players like telfer,hall and Doyle never gave anything less than 100%. not the best players in the world but always put their bodies on the line for the cause. Telfer was actually a vital cog in a pretty decent team

I'd never boo a player, but I'm as guilty as any of facepalming when Platt or Eastwood has come on. I think my problem is I expect everyone to be the next Henry so, when they aren't, I feel an unfounded resentment without meaning too. Some of my resentment is down to laziness though and I make no apologies for that.

Just because it happens doesnt make it right does it. The majority on here moan about having poor players or players who want to leave and yet people continue to slag off their own players and wonder why this is.

Booing is one thing that really bugs me. Everyone will huff and puff if players mis-place passes etc, but I hate it when players are booed.
If we continue to pick on players are boo them, we are going to drive players out of club or make players not want to join.

As has been said, the criticism levelled to the likes of Paul Telfer were very harsh as was one players that could never be accused of not giving his all for the shirt. I think we can forgive the players for not being as talented as Messi, as long as you see them giving 100%. Players that are lazy and do not work hard cannot be forgiven.

I always liked telfer, worked so hard, never given a chance by sky blue fans. Had a successful career mind, Celtic and all that, good on him!

It has never ceased to amaze me, how our 'fans' have picked on some (many) players.

Over the decades, I have witnessed unbelievable abuse. It seems that, as soon as one vociferous fan starts, others join in because it's the fashionable thing to do. It's as if the members of the lynch mob don't have a mind of their own!

Has anyone ever noticed how much better the players perform when they feel the crowd is behind them? A brilliant example was the last home game, against Reading. We missed several goalscoring opportunities, but the crowd applauded the move, rather than bemoan the bad finish. How did the players respond? With repeated attempts, great build up play and movement, working for each other and the fans!

Booing and jeering, just results in players being afraid to express themselves.

Our players will need all the encouragement we can give them, this year in particular. Let's change the image and reputation of our supporters, and encourage players to want to come here....

clarke made mistakes last year,king made hardly any, people need to stop acting like jordan clarke is perfect just becomes hes young and homegrown, he was very poor at times last year, we are allowed to vent just as much as we cheer when he plays well

difference between being frustrated and bullying someone, i was frustrated at clarke many times last year but he was never booed or cheered off the pitch by fans,so lets not feel sorry for the lil fella.

i agree with burbage,give the players a chance and they will express themselves more(bell is a good example of this),but its human nature to have a lil moan if they repeatedly mess up

The abuse i heard Clarke get was far from a little moan and in the games i saw was one of the better players on show. You cant deny that some players can do no wrong and never get criticised whatever they do. I agree everyone can have the odd moan but a constant barrage of comments by a group of people isnt the same thing. Nobody is pretending he is perfect but its an example of some players are bulletproof and others are hung out to dry. As for KIng making hardly any mistakes i could have sworn he was sent off twice last season!

Do we think players go out to try and make mistakes?

Will moaning and criticising them stop this?

Will it make them a better player?

Will it want them to go that extra mile for the fans?

Can you think of a single example where getting on a players back has helped them turn it around and start producing?

If they're putting a shift in they have my support. Will I give extra time, chances and support to a young inexperienced player? Absolutely of course, every single time.

If I'm to be boooooed for supporting the players, then I'm more than happy to take it on their behalf. In fact I'll happily go on the pitch before the game or stay behind at the end of every game and stand in the centre circle whilst you all shout things about my parentage, looks or whatever else you want to vent or get off your chest if we can leave the guys alone. I want paying for it though

people are missing the difference between frustration and booing

its human nature to sigh or tut if someone messes up,as long as it doesnt get to levels of best,kyle etc its ok

also sometimes it prompts manager to sub a players whos doinc rap,but thats double edged sword as even poor form players can pop up with a winner sumtimes so who knows

either way plz learn the difference
