Will Thorn learn from his mistakes for next season? (1 Viewer)

I already have my season ticket and I am hoping that the above comes true.
Even with the squad we had last season we should have done better, too many times we looked like rabbits caught in the headlights.

I really hope Thorn can learn, some rookie Managers come good, look at Reading, but some
just keep repeating the same mistakes.

I would personally prefer a reasonable Div 1 Manger with some experience, but looks like we are stuck with what we have got, so please no more:

All back for corners, leaving no outlet from defense.

Lack of reaction to other Managers tactical changes until it is to late.

Lack of fight when the other side score, even a youth team can show fighting team spirit.

Defensive formations even when we are losing and need to throw everything at the opposition.

I am hoping for the best, but fearing the worst.

1. All back for corners, leaving no outlet from defense. - Tell me the last City manager who left a player up for a corner?

2. Lack of reaction to other Managers tactical changes until it is to late - To be fair to AT, as the season wore on the mistakes did become less and less, so maybe he is learning.

3. Lack of fight when the other side score, even a youth team can show fighting team spirit- Thought the spirit overall wasn't that bad. They did at least try, but lacked the physical and mental strength to compete on an equal footing.

4. Defensive formations even when we are losing and need to throw everything at the opposition - Yep, agree. Away from home we were far too cautious. Next season though in League One we will surely be much more inclined to attack teams away from home.

5. I am hoping for the best, but fearing the worst - Me too. Get some good new players in though and everything will change for me.

I don't believe we had a squad to equal any other club in the championship,so i don't think any manager would have kept us up,Bristol,Doncaster & Pompey had better players than us !

uurrhhh pass! But agree with you they should keep a little fella up front

Yes, it does look like hes learned/ing.But why did Harrison not have a word?? Think it maybe time for a change there as well.

Urrr NO... IMO only 2/3 players did try to compete,the rest walked,jogged or were standing still.Get into em

Agree,But dont call me Shirley
When we have the ball we dont look to bad,its when they have the ball we need to change formation.Need a city player in the middle.The center circle only gets used when we kick off/they score

I think Thorn's basic problem is that he really is defensive minded, hence get everyone back for corners.
You would think by now he would have realized this hands the opposition the initiative and puts us under even more pressure, anyway what good is Sheff against their center half's?

Thorn reminds me of Don Howe when he was manager.

The strange thing about Coleman's insistence on everyone back for a corner came after he had been sacked. He was summariser on a world cup game and said that he just couldn't understand why a certain country's manager brought everyone back for corners. Priceless!

Yep remember that.

I know a lot of teams do, do it, but i think it is pointless. Any clearance from a corner goes straight back to the opposition for them to have another go.

What use is Cody McDonald for opposition corners? McShuffty? Bigi?

Think it was Reading here at the Ricoh this season who actually left 2 players on the half way line when we had a corner. We subsequently had to leave 4 players back to cover.

I am a GK. I will not allow all players in my half of the pitch.

I want a player or two so I can throw them the ball on the halfway line or further. I remember the 1st time I played for my works team in my last job. I threw the ball to a player on the right wing. I had a few players shout at me whilst the ball was in the air. The ball then swerved out to the player I aimed at. It ended up being a 1 on 1. He scored. We won 1-0. My defence never shouted at me again.

To score you need chances. Attack my goal if you want. If I get the ball it is up to me to start an attack. Sit back and expect to be attacked.

I hate the tactic of bringing all players back for corners. However, it's not uniquely Thorn's baby. Blackburn did it in the SAS days, although - in fairness both of them were useful defending set-pieces. Plenty of other managers also use it. I do wish it could be ditched though.

Beyond that, I think Thorn did learn from some of his pre-Christmas mistakes, and had started to scrape some results together before the squad gave up on us late on in the season. I'd like to think he'll continue improving

What i have gauged reading peoples opinions on games i think the style of play is one of the top critisms. Not many people like the sideways football Thorn plays, sideways then back sideways then back sideways to Hussey or Christie, who mostly then lumps it up field.

Attacking football is obviously what we all want to see, putting teams under pressure, being creative,all would be fantastic, so hopefully now sideways Sammy is leaving, we might get someone in the middle finally to pass forward at least.

I think that probably sums why were so dismal away from home. Sitting back and inviting pressure caused us no end of problems, especially with the lack of pace to play on the break. 3 more wins away would have kept us up, but for some reason Thorn couldn't rectify the way we played and consequently that was our downfall.

The only mistake I can fault him for is when mcpake was fit, he should have moved Keogh to right back and got mcpake playing. Rather than let him go to hibs. However I appreciate this is purely subjective and with hindsight.

I think more importantly SISU have accepted the blame for the relegation by leaving thorn with such little options.

Will they learn from their mistakes. They are saying the right things however we have seen no action.
