Worst Away Days (1 Viewer)

Been sat here thinking about more ideas for subjects for my podcasts. One idea i have had is reading out some of the worst away days with a guest for example. Another idea i have had is to regularly have fans on with interesting stories or fans who are really committed. If any of you have interesting away days stories please comment on the thread i would love to read them and use them. First one that comes to mind was Charlton this season... took ages to get there... freezing cold and pissing it down... not a pub in sight... drinking crappy Fosters outside with no roof (rainwater made the drink more palatable)... thank god we won that game as it was venturing in slitting wrists territory.

And I wasn't even on that bloody boat!!!

Blackpool away this season was pretty grim. Half a days holiday from work, 3.5 hour drive up to spend the first 10 minutes watching Biamou writhe around in agony, the next 60 minutes watching Bakayoko be offside, and the remaining 20 minutes watching Liam O'Brien doing his best Lee Burge impression. Getting home at 2.30am because of M6 diversions with work the next day topped it all off.

Villa Away when we got relegated. If that werent bad enough it was my 14th Birthday, and my Parents had just bought me that morning the new kit for the following season, with Hadji on it. Just a bad day all round

I've told the story of a festive fixture against Stoke in the 04/05 season on here before. Freezing cold day, the executive Christmas dinner we got with our tickets was absolutely horrendous (I still don't know what the soup was meant to be, except rancid, and the rock hard spuds could have killed someone if they'd been thrown at them) and then we put in an absolute shocker of a performance and lost.

Another awful away game was Crewe, last game of that same season. After the incredible high of the last game at Highfield Road against Derby, this was about as big a come down as it was possible to have. Awful place, awful ground, awful performance.

Blackpool away in 2007/8. Five hours on the M6 to get in with a minute to spare, late December in the uncovered stand so it was arctic, Kevin Kyle sent off a few minutes after their opener and it got worse from there. After their third of four goals we fucked it off early and then got stuck in a traffic jam on the way home anyway. Worst game I've seen in every possible way.

Bristol Rovers was fucking awful considering it was still September. I froze my nuts off and ended up behind the seated part trying to keep warm and dry with a plastic glass of shit beer. And we were woeful! Not the worst ever but last season’s lowlight for me.

That was probably my best away day this season. Great crack on a minibus. Loads of food samosas etc. Great pub before and after the game. Cracking day out. And some folk paid twenty quid all you can drink on that boat!

Middlesbrough away in April 2011(?). Nice sunny and bright day, seemingly warm enough for just our City shirts and leaving coats in the car. Until in the stadium where it was Baltic. I’d never been so cold in my life, and haven’t been since. Others had clearly made the same mistake, wearing just shorts and T-shirt’s and looked like they were going to freeze. Football-wise Jutkiewicz opened the scoring, only for them to turn it around and score a winner in the dying minutes. Can remember their fans afterwards saying we were lucky to get even one goal because it was offside, apparently. Tbh we were poor that day.

These are generally going to be results orientated responses and if the weather is awful (and there's no cover as per 3 games this season) then you remember them much more.

My all time worst was Northampton away at the old ground (separated from the cricket ground by a rope). We drew them in the FA Cup when we were top division and not long after we'd won the FA Cup. It lashed it down for the entire game and we were so poor. They could smell victory and as usual against a relative minnow we duly obliged. Having rested Big Cyrille, he was brought off the bench to rescue us, only to an ironic chorus of "who the fkn hell are you" from the Northampton fans. We trundled out and remained soaked all the way home. I didn't travel to Northampton when it was our home ground for the season and I'm convinced it's raining every time I drive through Northamptonshire for any reason.

I have a few tales regarding the old grounds at places like Cardiff and Millwall away where we didn't fare too well, but that's more to do with us fearing for our health from their intimidation. Fine when you're in the ground giving it the 'big un', not so good when you realise that you have to head out in their direction to get your transport home whilst most of the others were by coach. I'd like to think I've learnt over the years, particularly as I can't run these days, but we occasionally still have our moments

Lost miserably !

worst for me personally was a Newcastle game where i got a call returning home from Yorkshire that a friend had got a spare ticket to a midweek evening game - so i turned round and met them on the A1 and went to the game - i had no coat to speak of and it was snowing and kin freezing no thick socks just work clothes - we had no cover as they were redeveloping St James park 2010 - Morrison scored and then 2 minutes later they had equalised and we eventually lost 4-1 - i got frost bite and got home at 2 in the morning

Thats brought back another memory. Bradford on a friday night in August 3rd game after relegation. City laid on free coaches as was being shown live on the ITV sports channel. All the city fans on the coach no tops on, hottest day of the year. Got to Bradford and it was bitter. Absolutely freezing. To top it off city lose 2-1 and had a player (Thommo?) sent off. Long trip home afterwards

There are a lot to mention, the most abject in recent years was under Pressley when we lost 4-1 at Oldham. It was bitter cold as it always is at Boundary Park, and we were appalling. Maddison scored a deflected free kick for us but I can't remember us having a shot otherwise. I think Liam Kelly was playing for Oldham.

I reckon the ricoh would be one of the worst away days in the football league. Absolutely nothing nearby, empty stadium with little atmosphere.

That was the first away game I took the mrs to. We were having a week away in Blackpool. I got so bored that I talked her into us making the little(ish) trip. It was colder in Oldham than it was in Blackpool! Very cold night. She still seemed to have caught the bug, but since we got married she doesn’t go at all.

For me it was the Full Members Cup away fixture at Stoke City's Victoria Ground around 85/86. There were sixteen of us (yes, 16) in the away end. Mid week. Crap game. On the way back we turn the wrong exit and ended up travelling north up the M6 rather than back down. Nightmare.

Yet you find our fans all over social media saying how good it is. Particularly the younger ones. Either still blinded by Sky Blue haze or just plain stupid.

Summed up perfectly. By far my worst day. I live in Northampton and it is a great town with very loyal fans (rugby rules the roost) I had to go to work and cope with the justifiable humiliation. I didn’t go to the game as I suspected the worst. I found out in the pub via the pink un. My world collapsed.

For people being cold, when we won 3-1(?) at MK Dons when they played at that hockey stadium. I've never been so cold at a football ground ever. Even when we scored I reckon half of the fans couldn't jump up as they were frozen to the wooden bench type stand we were stood on. Still sends shivers down me when I think of it.

I have to say from personal experience Reading and Scunthorpe are the same if not worse... especially now I've discovered Dhillons by the Ricoh.

I remember that. Joachim scored a header from the edge of the box and we tried to stay warm by abusing the cov fan with the Scotland flag.

QPR on a Tuesday night in 2004 was far and away the worst for me. An accident had caused London to be completely gridlocked, so when we arrived it took us an extra two hours to limp our way across to Shepherds Bush, meaning kick off was missed.

Then, when we were finally only half a mile away from Loftus Road, the car broke down. So we began pushing it down some West London side-streets, frantically looking for somewhere to leave it while we went to the match. We'd heard on 5live that the score was 0-0, but unbeknown to us while we were pushing the car around, Jamie Cureton had bagged two goals just before half time for QPR, so we arrived at the ground at half time to discover that we were actually two-nil down.

One of the most abject 45 minutes I've ever seen from a City team followed and we went on to lose 4-1. Steve Staunton showed his appreciation for our support by showing us his middle finger, and we left wondering why we bother and how are we're going to get home.

I don't miss the Peter Reid days...

It was awful. Was it before or after the abject display against Accrington? They were in the same 7 day period anyway.

Norwich away in the 3rd round of the FA cup early 90's,Went on the Friday as my gf at the time's parents lived in Norwich
Had a good session that night(Drinking before you all ask),Then woke up to be told the game is off frozen pitch.
I thought they were taking the piss but true,Ended up spending the afternoon shopping!!!

Bristol City away on what I think was an Eater Monday, the year we went down to league one in 2012. They were in the dogfight with us and we needed a result to keep realistic survival hopes going - it was piss-wet through all day, we were in a small pub with beer that wasn't great and limited/"hot" food served cold. A long walk along the edge of a dual carriageway, down a rubble bank and through a wet field to get to the ground. Terrible away end with pillars in the way. We did take the lead through our ex-loannee Jon Stead but then we crumpled and get stuffed 3-1. Cue another long walk back to the station in the pissing rain, had to avoid some weirdos in the station and couldn't even drink as was driving home after getting off the train at Didcot.

Northampton away in 2017 was bad too. Only game where I've left with time to spare - 30 minutes to spare in this case, such was the behaviour of some scumbags directly behind us throwing gas canisters on the pitch; the on-field performance didn't help and nor did the mood of the fans as it became clear we were sliding towards an ignominious relegation.

ended up in a pub after that game that had to be seen to be believed, right shit hole.

Set off for that game, 4 of us in my mates Fiesta XR2 with a broken heater, absolutely freezing! We stopped at a supermarket in Kings Lynn for more cans only to be told village gossip style by this bearded bumpkin that the 'match was off, frozen pitch!' Returning to supermarket car park, my mate had picked up a parking ticket for using a disabled bay, signage obscured by the frosty ground.
