The EDL will be in town and of course this will be countered by anti-fascist organisations. People will be scared even if it doesn't kick off.
Never quite understood this.
Being of foreign descent I have always considered my self as different and treated as different. I do consider myself as English. This is the country I call home, the country that looks after my health, has educated me and looked after when I have been unemployed. I want England to win every football match that they play along with cricket, rugby etc I'm sure you get the picture.
I understand that some people feel threatened by Europe and areas of towns and cities that high a high proportion of immigrants that some feel do no want to integrate and adopt English values ( I still don't know what they are).
But do any of you feel that marching through towns with high levels of immigrants is the way to win people over?
The stereo type of the EDL is skinheads and football hooligans. Believe it or not if they did things differently I might even have considered joining them as I am a proud Englishman and I am also proud to have Greek-Cypriot heritage. My wife is English, my kids are English, this is my home, There are many things that is great about England and Britain that I would like to defend and to a point the EDL are right. Most of my Cypriot friends married Greek-Cypriot girls. Most Asian men I know have married Asian women and incidentally for the same religious background even if they are not religious themselves. I just don't' think that the EDL do or say the right things to gain support or be listened to. Marching through town centres and being confronted by Anti-Fascist's in my opinion aint the way to go forward and it scares me.

I don't really understand it or seen one of their marches so can't comment on too much.

I did see something the other week (I think it was 24 hours in police custody) where in Luton this lad with learning difficulties and his mum were getting terrorised by an asian / muslim family, people knocking on their door with weapons and threatening them. The mum and lad got fed up so they flipped and said that one of them was a terrorist / hate preacher and it was disgusting etc. They got arrested for racial aggravation, then at the end it says the bloke was actually a terrorist / hate preacher.

I can see why people would be annoyed by immigration, but if you go over the top with it you lose credibility.

Yes I agree, but there are gangs of white youths that also terrorise neighbourhoods, I know I work with the toerags

Don't disagree with that, there are loads by me.

Think I pressed submit too early, the family on that program were going on about joining the EDL because they wanted protection from it. It was a bit weird actually the way they kept going on about it. It was almost a bit like it could have been reversed and somebody going on about Allah.

What are they actually protesting about? Is it "nobody should be allowed into the country" full stop?

There was an EDL march in Blackpool the same day we played there, it really was a bit like this is England.

Yup, bad people are bad people, regardless of race, colour or creed.

I'm interested in this (genuinely!) how it comes across, and what happens to make you feel this?

Hi
In manifests itself in a number of ways. In England I am classed as Greek, in Cyprus I am classed as English. I identify as English, but there are certain aspects of my personality that are very Greek, especially in my values and in the way that I communicate i.e. I get excited and speak loudly which comes across as threatening (nothing could be further form the truth).
I like the fact that my name can be traced back to ancient Greece, I like the fact that have have a huge family in Cyprus, I am comfortable there but it is not home.
If I lived there I would miss footie, golf, the English banter, TV and my friends, therefore I am England till I die and proud of it, warts an all! There is no place like England and no place i would rather be

Probably more scared of the plates you are throwing at them! :) :angelic:

The thing is though like you say, some people don't integrate like you have which annoys me. I like the fact my daughter will integrate with different races, religions etc and encourage it. It is good that she can understand at a young age things like that and grows up knowing it.

We went to Blackpool last year, my daughter was on a ride and there was a group of muslim girls with vales etc. My daughter was laughing and playing and talking to the girls and they were having a great time. One of their mums clocked it and went and dragged the girl away from my daughter.

Things like that I have an issue with.

Then again there are polish kids in her class who speak better English than many english adults and I think that's amazing!

Don't think they could answer that question themselves! If we go down that road then we'd have, as one example, a massive shortage of doctors and nurses. And what would you do with the millions of Brits living abroad, presumably they'd all have to come back?

I'm not a fan of the counter demonstration. I think if they were just ignored it would get little coverage. Why don't they have their counter-event the next weekend and make it something positive that celebrates the diversity in the country.

I'd be all for it, if it wasn't likely to be hijacked by nutters.

As it is, I might not bother with the city centre this weekend!

A far right group (National Action or some shite) attempted to stage a "white man march" in Liverpool last year......they were chased out of town & at one point had to hide in the "left luggage" office at the rail station.....funny....

however at several points during the day, it was difficult to distinguish between the neo Nazis & the UAF......I witnessed both groups being violent, threatening & a menace to the general public.

It's because they are not really proud of being English, they have no time for the tolerance, acceptance and fairness that this country is built upon. They are just backwards racists who hide behind a mask of pride.

The EDL did a march in Wellington (couple of miles from Telford) back during the summer riots a couple of years back. Wellington has a high Asian population so it was clearly picked as a venue where the racists could incite their own special brand of hatred.

I was working for Card Factory at the time and all the Wellington staff refused to work so I got the short straw and had to leave my Shrewsbury store to run it that day as the area manager said shutting was not an option. Every other business was shut and had boarded up their windows so it was very eirie.

3 hours and 4 customers later we were still open but the area manager relented and let us shut once the row of riot police turned up outside the shop. I didn't stick around to see what happened next. The atmosphere around the place was filthy but I did get paid for a full day so not all bad!

Got given a "We Are Cov" flyer in town earlier actually which read a bit like a call to arms!!

My prediction?

About 30 from each side will turn up, the EDL lot will be put into Weatherspoons to get pissed, sing England based songs and wave their flags whilst the UAF lot will be on the plaza (?) making daisy chains and fingering their dreads by Lady Godiva. Old Bill will escort the EDL lot out and walk them around to the Council House and on the way both sides will shout and froth at the mouth at each other whilst surrounded by about 300 Old Bill.

Both sides will spout bullshit, the Old Bill will have enough and escort the EDL lot back onto their coach and it will all be done and dusted by about half 12.

They're marching in Coventry to highlight "How this once-proud cathedral city is falling below the national radar while it’s being gutted by its transformation into a Muslim ghetto "

Uummm......no its you bunch of mouth-breathing fuckwits.

Hopefully it'll be a damp squib and they'll not both coming here again!

What's a Muslim ghetto?

Coventry.......according to the EDL.

I'm guessing they just had a load of proforma press releases knocked up and then just write in the next city/town they're going to bother into the blank spaces

Looks like loads of Swastikas have appeared around road signs and stuff around the town.

I'd put money on it being somebody else doing it to make them look bad, the same as the white bloke who did the graffiti in Willenhall.

The most overwhelming praise and credit in all of the photos and videos on the Telegraph website I've seen must surely go to the street cleaners down in CV1, the place looks spotless everywhere !!

Been to town. Coppers everywhere and a helicopter in the sky.

Nice to know where my taxes are going!

Grrrr!!!

I'd be even more annoyed if I actually paid tax.

I like how the EDL gang congregated at the Litten Tree, whose staff didn't realise it wasn't their usual crowd.

I was fortunate to see the EDL in Brighton a while back , the hate and anger In these idiots was a sight to behold !

Just shouting and screaming at anyone and everyone, eyes bulging, faces contorted with rage , on the usually lovely seafront

The thing that struck me the most was there really wasn't anyone around apart from middle class white folk

I saw some in Blackpool in a pub, they looked a bit strange. Literally like this is England.

Few young lads, the old boys, mullets

What a load of idiots. For all the publicity they get I couldn't tell you what they actually want or stand far past a general 'we hate muslims' stance.

It's a shame they don't have another and get as many people as they can country wide into a closed off street.

Then release a couple of tigers.

Thing is if you're going to have a right wing organisation at least have a vague idea of what you want. If you went up to ten different people at that march you'd get ten different answers or ridiculous things like not allowing Sharia law in the UK, which isn't allowed anyway.

Yep the old "Do you want Sharia Law in this county?" line does seem to be peddled out by them with some regularity.

However, if you ask them what it is, what it means and how it could be introduced in the UK they just revert to "Open your eyes you lefty twat" - which doesn't really answer the questions :)
