I was wondering that earlier, has it always been like this but that we just didn't have such immediacy of information? Live footage of attacks make everything seem more scary than reading coverage in tomorrow's newspaper for instance

I think so. My big overarching theory is that we aren’t built to handle communication with the entire planet at once.

It’s not really.

Violent crime and discrimination and poverty all down.

Once again the prime minister talks sense and manages to be strong without ratcheting up the language. I don’t agree about dehumanising the perpetrator and not using his name but she’s explained it and is standing on the principle.

So so impressed by her actions

Absolutely. She has come across as a Stateswoman; calm, reassuring and in control. She has set the right tone both in terms of how NZ is dealing with the events in the immediate days but also in the need to develop legislation to try and prevent repetition.

I read somewhere that a study done by a well respected criminal psychologist came to the conclusion that going in to detail about the perpetrator is more likely to lead to others with a similar mindset to go out and do the same. The best thing to do in the media is give as little detail as possible about the killer and loads of detail about the people they've murdered.

Thank you that’s interesting

I would think more tangible actions like dealing with the gun laws and investigating right wing extremism would have more effect than the "I'm not using his name" thing. Came over a bit self indulgent and wanky. That was just my take

We just know about every little thing that happens instantly now.

Steven Pinker has a new book out which uses a scientific approach to show that in pretty much all measures - crime, poverty, war, education etc that things are far better now than previous generations and the general trend is one of progress.
I probably don't share his optimism re the environment but he's usually pretty robust in his research and arguments. It's on my booklist.

Awful tragedy , but all these things do is highlight just how much the media and the governments really are the enemy Of the people

This has received non stop traction , the whole world embraces a truly horrific crime and rightly so , all whilst ignoring that hundreds of Christians in Nigeria have died in recent months , or a bus was set on fire yesterday with 51 children onboard in Italy .
Swept away faster than you can say “agenda”

Want to know why the world is full of anger hatred and extremism , look no further than the media , the governments and big corporations like google Facebook and Twitter

Scum
Total scum

Rest in peace all who died in New Zealand , fucking outrageous

You're wondering why media has taken a story where 50 people have been killed by a nutter radicalised on a platform anybody can access over 1. a story in which nobody died and 2. a story which is unverified and also "Religious affiliation is a secondary issue in the ongoing Nigerian herder-farmer conflict, which impartial experts consistently describe as being primarily a dispute over natural resources and land usage."

Get your head out of your echo chamber.

Is the agenda supposed to be religion related? Seems likely the kid, in the country illegal, who saved everyone on the bus in Italy was Muslim given it is the dominant religion in his home country.
Italy's Ansa news agency reports that Ramy made the call while pretending to pray in Arabic - but was in fact issuing a warning to his father.

His father told Ansa that the family came from Egypt, and Ramy was born in 2005 in Italy - but has never been issued official citizenship documentation.

Completely a religious motivation and the man who tried to kill 50 kids was about immigration , it’s not me with my head in an echo chamber , the circle jerk is in the media and on social media .

PS

My point is completely valid , the media swept both stories and the Holland incident under the carpet as quickly as possible .

It’s not the narrative they want to push

All you have to do is look at the Jim jefferies controversy currently going on and then you will see what I mean , they are all divisive scumbags

Agenda , agenda , agenda

If it's not in the media how did you hear about it? Or are you talking about media that doesn't go along with your narrative?

Sadly, you are right.

I think it's more the case that when the man bites the dog, it gets coverage. When the dog bites the man, it's yesterday's news.

Mate il leave it here because I don’t want to disrespect the death of 49 people by a complete cuntrag,

All il say is , Jussie smollett , Jim jefferies , terrorism , trump , Brexit , anti white sentiments , anti Muslim sentiments etc etc .

The media , big corporations and social media are divisive scutters that are a main if not THE main culprits of influence in the problems we face today .

290 plus Christians in Sri Lanka not worth a mention lads? It's been over a day already. No outpourings of grief?

Whoever would do such a thing?

Terrible of course. Less developed country, won't get the same exposure... and that's wrong. Sri Lanka's had a long history of violence too, which numbs a lot of it.

But tit for tat, who's first to the worst atrocity make which political point isn't exactly going to help... why not start a new thread, and I'll happily say it's awful in there.

I was reading about that earlier.

One of the bombers queued up in a hotel for breakfast with everybody else and detonated the bomb. What a coward.

As NW has said, not as much exposure but the timing seemingly makes it look religion motivated?

The Sri Lankan authorities are reticent to attribute blame for the bombings because the use of suicide bombers was pioneered by the tamil tigers during the conflict there.
As others have said, it's pretty sad that it hasn't garnered the coverage that other events (notre dame!) have, but that's the world we live in.
And if it does turn out that tamils (hindu) are responsible then it will slip from news-worthiness all the quicker...
