Controversial plans to convert the first and second floors of the Old County Hall on Bayley Lane into student accommodation have been submitted to Coventry City Council.
The proposals seek permission for the change of use from offices to 16 self-contained bedrooms aimed at students.
The grade 2 listed building underwent major refurbishment work in 2011, with the ground floor converted to a bar & dining area which has been trading successfully as ‘The Establishment’ ever since.
The upper floors were converted to offices as part of the same program of renovation, however the office space was never sub-let, and in 2015 the owners sought permission to convert this space into a boutique hotel.
In the design and access statement submitted with the application it states:
“The demand for student accommodation in this area is considerable. Permission to convert these areas into a small 15 room boutique hotel was granted in 2015. On considering this more closely it became evident that the provision of student accommodation would be more commercially viable with the additional income ensuring the long term success of the development and provide the University’s students with much need additional accommodation.
“It is felt these alterations will ensure the long term future of this prized historic building with minimal disturbance to the fabric of the building.”
The public consultation on these proposals will run until the 3rd November.
