Tony Mowbray is ‘close’ to landing two new players to boost his Coventry City squad before Saturday’s big Ricoh Arena showdown with Wigan Athletic.
While the Latics continued their recruitment drive with reports that they’re on the verge of signing former Sky Blues goalkeeper Chris Kirkland today, which would take their tally to 13, the City boss is waiting on a few finer details to fall into place to enable him to complete a permanent deal and bring in another loan signing.
“There’s potential to bring people in before the weekend,” said Mowbray, whose side is crying out for a physical presence up front as well as a bit of pace.
“There is a permanent deal that is potentially quite close. We’ve met the player and the agent and had a long chat and they’ve gone away to discuss the proposals. It’s an ongoing thing – he’s an unattached player who is available to sign.”
The Telegraph understands the permanent target is a winger.
Mowbray, who took in the Birmingham City v Tottenham Under-21 game behind closed doors this afternoon, is waiting for more players to become available once Premier League clubs announce their 25-man squads in early September after the summer transfer window closes.
But the 51-year-old clearly hopes to get at least one more loan tied up before then.
“We have got one or two players who are a very fine margin away from coming to join us but their clubs and their agents have got other issues that they have to resolve rather than me,” he said.
“I can’t tell you specifics but it might be that their club wants the player to sign a new contract before he goes out on loan. The agent is saying he’s going to sign a new contract but the fine detail of the thing needs addressing before the club let him go, so we have to wait and hopefully that deal will get done and the player will be allowed out on loan.”
He added: “It’s very rare that clubs allow players out on loan in their last year of their contract because if they do really well then the agent might say he’s not going to sign a new contract.
“So it’s not just about waiting for the 25-man squads to be announced, there are other reasons why certain players aren’t here already.”
