It's the worst building in Coventry IMO, blocking out the views of the cathedral. It's one building I would gladly push the plunger down on.

F1 an absolute bargain though at £19 (well it was circa 2003 when I last went). But yes it is shit
yes. That would never be allowed to be built today. So ugly and next to the cathedral. A German colleague stayed there and said it was a disgrace and that it was strange to have to use a public car park on the other side of the road and a bit away. She also said Coventry looked to be the poorest city - judged only on the city centre - on her England trip. I was there ( at the Britannia ) recently ( for the Blackpool game )and thought it was very 70's, but the breakfast was good. I remember it as the De Vere when it used to have a better reputation. It should be demolished as it is in a prime position and makes our city look cheap. They should have a Hotel there in keeping with the sandstone of the cathedral.

The Coventry Hill Hotel. A prime example of 60's architecture. Incredible anyone stops there.
The city centre looks really dire now. There seem more empty shops than open ones.
What's the Godiva called on the Holyhead road now? Is that still going. Another truly dire building.

There are new shops are opening. Just had a Schuh and a Tiger open in the past week or so. Both very good shops in my opinion.
Which is a shame as a lot of cathedral visitors come through there. Coaches were constantly pulling up in front of the Britannia. It really looks grim. In our room one of the wardrobe doors was missing. Not impressive.

Last I heard the Britannia was owned by the same group as the Royal Court. They also attempted to rescue Pontins a few years ago which IIRC was successful. Name Chris Ferrari rings a bell. Anyway, I do agree it is an eyesore. Same goes for one or two other buildings in the City.

Really? Many modern buildings are built to fit in with the style of existing architecture. Do you think that dirty concrete does the cathedral justice? The cathedral was built in sandstone to fit in with the existing Middle Ages buildings such as St Mary's Hall.

I was in Pool Meadow for the first time in over 20 years about a year ago. Crikey how much it's changed! I guess it looks better but I, of course, have fond memories (such as getting off the 18 on a Saturday morning & meeting my first girlfriend there) and so prefer the original.

Britannia can boast furniture that disintegrates during a 24 hour stay, sharp slivers of random wood, a panoramic view of the Ringroad, lifts that stop mid-floor, some of the surliest staff ever engaged in customer-facing jobs, and the dining room floor is stickier than an all-you-can-drink-for-a-tenner nightclub. Not to mention being frequented by murderers/prostitutes/junkies etc

Used to go to watch the porn films in the Cinema on the corner of Pool meadow and i think we were there for a Clint Eastwood all nighter
Woud'nt put anybody up in Coventry - we tend to use the Holiday Inn in Kenilworth but its a bit ragged inside

Theatre one used to show 18+ adult movies in ine of its theatres. Before anyone starts I was too young to ever be let in as I would imagine the average clientele would have been 60+. I do remember being ushered out once as we'd gone into the wrong cinema once - I think it was on all the time.
Was there one called The Alexandra on the corner? I remember seeing a porn film there ( I think it was called the Alex ). Was drunk with a mate on the way home from somewhere.... Only remember a huge naked girl's arse on the screen...... And then someone farted..... Sort of ruined the moment.

Me and a mate sneeked in once and watched some Italian dubbed rubbish, we were about 16. The visit was most memorable for the old bloke who came in, trilby hat and dirty Mac included and sat himself down next to my mate, a little while later my mate nudged me and nodded towards this bloke, his hat was now in his lap bobbing up and down furiously. We left !!!

I was a teen in the late 80s / early 90s. Age checking was virtually non-existent. We had the police in the school to give the don't do drugs talk and they said outright that they weren't bothered about underage drinkers etc so long as they weren't causing trouble. Times have changed.
