Coventry City striker Lateef Elford-Alliyu is set to leave the club when his short-term contract expires in January.

The 23-year-old former West Bromwich Albion trainee was given a four-month deal by his former Baggies’ boss Tony Mowbray earlier this season in a bid to prove his form and fitness.

He has played a total of 24 minutes for the Sky Blues after coming off the bench in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy exit at Yeovil Town and the 2-1 home defeat to Northampton Town in the FA Cup.

But the Sky Blues manager admits the forward has fallen victim to a combination of intense competition and not quite hitting the heights required

“His time finishes at the end of January and I have already informed Lateef that he won’t be retained.

“He’s been playing for the Under-21s. We have circulated his name to help him find a club.

“Probably through the period he has been here we have signed a few players; Fortune, Cole, Maddison is coming back to fitness and it has probably diluted his chances of us keeping him.

“He has helped the Under-21 team to play football matches really because you can’t have Bassala Sambou playing 18s on a Saturday and 21s every Monday, so Lateeef has come in and done well, scored a few goals and yet i feel that moving this club forward, he’s going to fall just a bit short of where we need to be.

“I wanted to have a look at him, up to speed and training every day and back in professional football to see how fit we could get him.

“I do feel he’s probably fallen just a bit short.”

I hate the expression " speculate to accumulate" and sometimes it goes wrong. Then it's a waste of money

He could have come good. Let's not bother taking a look at anyone in the future then. Waste of time and money.

So what have CCFC gained out of him the 4 months he's been signed?

In the case of this fella it has been a complete waste of time & money.

I let Lateef go in FM, season after he scored 26 for Gillingham.

This will not happen in real life.

I hope Thomas ends up playing his testimonial for us, just to see the tears on here.

Mowbray should ring up Pressley and tell him Lateef is the best finisher he has ever seen

Wherever he goes, he will score lots of goals and we'll all be saying "why didn't we keep him?"

He's not good enough, simple as that. Have watched him playing under 21's a few times this season and he's not up to much so would never cut it in the 1st team. Terrible finisher

Chief Commentator!
Not surprised as he looked quite poor in those 24 minutes I seen him.

Know you can't judge someone in 24 minutes, but I do trust Mowbrays judgement as he's known him a lot longer and it sounds like we wouldn't have seen anything that we didn't already see in those 24 mins!
