The only permanent motorsport venue in London? Yes. Permanent tarmac oval and figure of eight in the the stadium with regular meetings for various formulas but mainly stocks and bangers.

What sort of crowds do the stocks and bangers get?

It used to depend on the meeting and formulas racing. Unfortunately since the stadium has been allowed to be run down certain areas are no longer open. I've been and it's been shoulder to shoulder (most of the stadium is standing) and I've been when its just been a couple of thousand.

It's no walk in the park I can assure you. It's hard work both physically and mentally. Also when doing amateur motorsport you don't have a team of mechanics keeping your car going, it's you and a couple of willing mates. It's hard graft, non stop but rewarding. You don't need to have the physique of an elite athlete but then it's motorsport not athletics. To sum up it's takes a damn site more physical exertion than darts but probably not as much as an iron man contest.

I have to admit, it doesn't sit easily with me WImbledon's recent actions.

On the one hand, it's a proper story - team reborn and goes home after being kicked out. On the other hand, Kingstonian will be kicked out from what was actually *their* ground originally, and expected to find a stadium nearby.

And then losing a stadium for any sport is a crying shame. It would be a shame, after all, if Coventry Bees go out of business when Brandon disappears (certain battles between them and Wimbledon speedway in the past too).

The only way I can reconcile it is that there was probably an inevitability for the Greyhound track disappearing - I used to go occasionally and it was on its knees. What it does show is that the actions of Hammam, and then Winkelman, still have repurcussions for clubs to this day. I don't know one way or the other if I'd sign the petition because I don't quite know what to make of it all yet, but it's certainly right and proper that the current tenants and fans of whatever's on-site now, are heard.

To be honest it's probably too late for Wimbledon but the truth is that short circuit motorsport is under attack. The real estate that the tracks operate from tend to be quite sizable such as Brandon and indeed Wimbledon (there's a sizable car park/pit area outside of the stadium complex itself) so they're attractive to developers and it's also under attack from nimbys, Mildenhall stadium is hanging on by a thread and I don't have time to go into the story but it's quite shocking and possibly a landmark decision that could effect every sporting venue in the country.

I think there's a small chance of Wimbledon being saved from the developers but the worry for the community is that if a stand isn't made now short circuit oval race tracks could be seen as an easy target. There's already developers sniffing around Foxhall stadium in Ipswich for instance as is Birmingham wheels that I know of.

It might be a minority sport compared to football but I think I'm right in saying as far as motorsport goes it attracts more spectators a year than the large circuits such as Silverstone, they're just not as glamorous.

Just been reading up on this, although there doesn't seem to be a huge amount of information online. Read an article that says there's two proposals for the site, the one for the new football stadium and another to redevelop the existing stadium.

However it seems redevelopment would be for greyhound racing only so even if the football stadium wasn't to go ahead there would still be no motor sport?

If it happens they'll be motorsport, the reason there's motorsport there at all is because the greyhounds can't survive on their own at that site.

I have a mate who supports Dulwich Hamlet and he says that AFC Wilbledon are hated in non league football for what they did to Kingstonian. Fair enough they needed to get home, and it's good news that they seem to be there, but the process they have destroyed an existing non league team

Seems a bit harsh, aren't AFC giving Kingstonian a 7 figure sum from the ground sale even though they have no obligation to do so?

Haven't seen any mention of why Kingstonian can't stay and groundshare with Chelsea Women, has any reason been given?

I'm not too sure on the details, I was told about this hatred a few years ago so it must have nothing to do with the sale. I think its more that they dropped themselves into another clubs home, took advantage of a weak owner to buy the ground from them and then proceeded to put the Wimbledon identity all over it with little to no respect to Kingstonians. I'm sure we can sympathise with a club coming and taking 'our' stadium away.

I've nothing against Wimbledon, I hope they do manage to get back to Merton. One of the very few clubs to have a worse time than us over the last 20 years.

Fair enough. Sounds like they are doing what they can now to not just leave them in the shit. Not really sure why they can't continue to groundshare when Chelsea take it over for their womens team.
