It was incredibly dull for sure. Football has lost a good servant to the game though. Will we have another minute's silence on Saturday? Guessing we will.

In fairness to him, he replaced the appalling Terry Butcher and didn't have much to work with in the quest for survival other than a decent defence. He at least kept us up which was important since we then became members of the new Premier League where the money was.
Sad to see another ex-manager leave us anyway, and as you say he was a decent football man with a good career as player and coach.

R.I.P Don a great football man . shocking for CCFC though. thank god Notts County saved us on the final day of the season beating The Hatters 2-1 and a Cov Kid scoring their winner if memory serves me right.

Strange our best ever manager and one of our worst go the same week. But Don Howe was one of ours for a period so respect to him R.I.P.

Best wishes to his family after the sad news. As above comments, a great football man.
Notts County's goals were both scored by Rob Matthews - he was born in Slough. Matthews background was unusual (but not unique) because he hadn't come through the youth ranks of a professional club and hadn't been an apprentice either - he had been a student at Loughborough University.

He did make Butcher look good, but not in the way you mean, I suspect. Butcher arrived at City without a clue about management, he just didn't know what to do. He had no idea, for instance, how he would go about signing a player. Don Howe bailed him out, so I guess they figured they could do without Butcher once it was clear he was actually not going to play.

Yep, this is pretty much my sentiment too.
He used to do a bit of commentary on live games for ITV, I recall, and his most-used expression was: "An inch lower and it was a goal all the way!"

Met him and the players when he was assistant to Terry Butcher when I was a youngster after a game at Christmas. I remember him being a lovely fella asking me my name, who my favorite players were, if I enjoyed the game etc and generally making me feel important. Maybe he wasn't the best manager for us but his warmth and friendliness left an impression on me to make me feel like I should be part of this club.

Let's not go overboard on this Don Howe was an ex manager here for less than 2 years probably didn't think much about us before his brief spell or after, black arm bands should suffice
