Worst ever decision by a referee? (7 Viewers)

great thread.

obviously Sheffield United is still hurting, but over the years we've had some appaling refs and decisions.

however...

i can't remember the game or the opponents, but how about that game where the lady Lino ((Amy someone) took over at half time, got every decision spot on and we won the match. The ref she replaced was appaling.

Perfectly good Crystal Palace goal (at Highfield Road) from a free kick, hit the back stanchion and rebounded out, ref thought it hit the bar (in fairness so did I until I saw the replay on TV).

Whoever was refing when that wanker Summerbee pretty much ended Froggatts career.

Rubbish!

It hit the post and came out.

FA Cup at Sheffield Wednesday, midweek due to Saturday's fixture being post poned due to snow. I think we took the lead through Terry Gibson then Wednesday equalised. Dave Bennett got taken out when clean through but got nothing.

Then the real piss poor decision, from all things a South Yorkshire, deep in injury time with a replay beckoning back at Highfield Road.

Wednesday corner to the near post, their forward rises and heads it wide for goal kick. But as it goes wide of the post it hits the back of a defenders arm which was outstretched through jumping in front of the attacker.

No hesitation whistle and pointed straight to the spot. Wednesday score and are through. Coventry make official complaint to FA who I think just threw it straight in the bin.

I am pissed off even now.

Any one of the refs that would play 10 plus minutes of injury time at Anfield in the 70's/80's and blow straight after Liverpool's winner/equalizer

The Reading ghost goal V Watford about six years ago bamboozled Stuart Atwell that day I think.
Crystal Palace suffered the same fate with another effort when Freddie Sears knocked one in.

Pat Partridge sending Danny Thomas off at Leeds in the FA Cup in 81 - wasn't enough to help them through though, we won the replay 1-0

she was awful - but in our favour - every time we appealed for a free kick she gave it - brilliant but awful

Remember game at Norwich maybe 20-25 years ago. IIRC we were loosing 1 - 0 when we score after a scramble. Ref disallows goal & explains he had already blown for a penalty when the ball has hit the net. After much protests things settle down & ball is placed on the pen spot - can't remember who took it- & ball is promptly dispatched into bottom
left corner. Hurrah 1 - 1. But wait this dick-heads not finished yet. So he disallows the pen for encroachment (unbelievable Jeff ) well you can guess where the next attempt went can't you. Result 1 - 0

I was at Highfield Road when the ref made this ill advised attempt at a back-heal...

Jeff Winter for sending Aloisi off for his slap on Danny Mills in '99. Should have given him a bloody medal not a red card!

I forget the year but FA Cup game at QPR...the final kick of the game...city had a corner. Kick taken and the ref blew the final whistle before the ball reached the penalty area. Game over, and the ball hits the back of the net. Result QPR win 1-0.

Not just a ref at fault but the Pedro Mendes' no goal against Roy Carroll takes some beating. Bet Clattenburg and Lewis are both still having nightmares about it now.

Another one that sticks in my mind and is often forgotten was during our 2-4 win at the Hawthorns. Dean Kiely pretty much caught the ball about 5 yards outside his area in front of the D. He realised he was about to be sent off so quickly dropped the ball signalling to Mifsud to take it unopposed. Clattenburg (again) blew for a FK and I think Kiely was booked.

Not a Cov one but the winner takes all WC qualifier Netherlands vs England 93 and not sending Koeman off at 0-0 when he brings Platt down clean through on goal. 5 mins later Koeman scores the opening goal.

Not Cov, but the ref not sending Koeman off for hauling down a clean through Platt in the Euro qualifiers.

'He's gonna flick one, he's gonna flick one...' (still love the Do I Not Like That documentary!)

A bad decision but technically a correct one (Assuming time ran out) Most ref's don't have the balls for it.

Still can't over the maradonna hand ball decision. Amazing.

As for Cov, seen some horrendous decisions but nothing remarkable springs to mind that takes the buscuit. The Sheffield United game this season was atrocious. How it wasn't a red card and a penalty or crossed the line and to give neither was too much for me.

The worst refereeing performance I've seen live was away at Sheff Utd under Micky Adams. We took the lead through Jamie Scowcroft, then spent the rest of the game getting hacked to pieces with impunity. We had Stephen Bywater in goal at the time who got so pissed off with the ball-boys not giving the ball back he took it out of their hands and got booked I think. Ended up losing to a dubious penalty in the last minute.

The worst I know of full stop was this Old Firm game 6 years ago:

Two particular come to mind. Forest in league cup 88/89 possibly. Our wall pushed away to allow Pearce to fire a free kick in. Also, at 3-3 v Wimbledon at home and us down to 9 men. Got free kick in there box for time wasting and score with quick free kick only for ref to disallow it.

There was a video I found a while ago which portrayed many games from the 2002 Korea/Japan World Cup as being ridiculously biased.

Everyone that played against South Korea was hit with disallowed goals, unfair sendings off and violent tackles, some including slaps and kicks.

I've posted a link below which is well worth a watch, but I can't remember if this is the exact video I originally found. There must have been some bribing of the officials, and the South Korea team must have known to have behaved so badly and as a bunch of bullies. Any of their dirty tactics were 'overlooked' it seems.

I was thinking about that game too. Didn't the ref award a penalty against Cyrille when the ball clearly hit his thigh?

Very much so. Well known amongst football people those games has dodgy written all over them. Just heard the ref for the Italy match the one who sent of totti has just come out of jail for drug trafficking thus proving he likes a bung. Also heard jack Warner personally picked the ref for the South Korea v Spain match later on in the 2002 WC and we all know his past from the last year. He is corrupt as the rest of them.

Honestly I don't know where it stops. Very worrying.

If you haven't seen them or can't remember them then well worth a look on YouTube.

Graham Poll in 2007 believe it was Cardiff we were playing game ended 2-2 but he twice disallowed Leon McKenzie goals for "pushing" and he sent one of theirs off when Mifsud had clearly dived. was after his world cup nightmare where he showed 3 yellows to that aussie think he was having a meltdown that season
