Platt and communication problems (5 Viewers)

Communication letting Coventry City down, says Clive Platt
by Andy TurnerNov 8 2011

CLIVE Platt believes communication is letting Coventry City down.

And the most experienced and one of the more vocal members of the Sky Blues squad is urging his team-mates to talk more on the pitch to help turn key periods of possession into points.

“I don’t think ability is in question at this club because up until 2-2 on Saturday I thought the best team I have seen this season were crumbling, so we have to take the positives from that,” said the 34-year-old centre-forward, who was instrumental in City’s second-half fight-back against Southampton.

“There have been a couple of away results which have been disappointing when we have crumbled as a team but every time we have played at home we have held our own.

“We have had vital turning points in games but I have not seen us turn one of those to our benefit yet and that’s something we have got to work on because it is costing us points every time and if we don’t address it soon we are going to be in a very, very difficult position.”

He added: “Just watching all their team they were talking and helping each other and you could see why they are top of the league and we’re not.

“Sometimes talking is the simplest of things to do but it is very quiet out there.

"They had eleven players helping each other through but we are just a bit disjointed at the moment.

"There has got to be something wrong because we are losing games.

“Every player out there – and not just the young lads – everyone needs help and information when they are on the ball because at times it is a very quiet place.

“At times you can bring the ball down on your chest and think you are fine but there is someone bearing down behind you, so you need a simple ‘hold it,’ just a bit of a shout.

"There are a lot of people trying their hardest on their own in all the different positions because there’s not enough communication.

“I was trying to talk to as many people around me to keep the pressure on because the pressure was on Southampton.

“They had been 2-0 up and then it was 2-2 and they were on the back foot and couldn’t get out of their half, and as long as we kept kicking it long and keeping them squeezed up then we picked up the second balls and we were back on them again.

“It was wave after wave of attack, chances and corners and we needed to keep that going.

"But we let them off and it all started when one of their midfielders dropped off, picked the ball up from a goalkick and was able to ease the pressure off for a few minutes.

“It may sound insignificant but it gave them time to regroup and get themselves back together.”

Platt certainly put himself about to good effect when he went on as second half substitute against Saints and is hoping he has done enough to earn a start against West Ham in City’s next game after the international break, and a run in the side.

“I tried to make an impact, as I try to do every time I go on whether it is 20 minutes to go or the last five minutes, just try to get as much out of the time I get out there to help us get points, which is desperate at the moment,” said the player whose equaliser was his first of the season.

“Lukas Jutkiewicz battled hard all game with no help from the referee, but I knew he would be fighting for that ball and I just wanted to make sure I was somewhere where I could capitalise on it and, luckily for me, it fell straight to me.

“I definitely think I can bring something to the team and want to fight to help us win points.

I think Platt talks a lot of sense just hope it doesnt fall on deaf ears in our squad

The more the man speaks the more I like him. Not many footballers say things like "it may sound insignificant", they don't use big words.

He clearly understands the game very well and his experience will be crucial. I've seen enough of Cody now to say that Clive is probably our 2nd best striker right now; and he really does sound like management material.

Everyone bangs on about us passing the ball around at the back; on Saturday it was direct, and as I said to my mate, 2nd half was all about us winning the 2nd phase ball. Credit to Thorn for changing the style when something isn't working.

I'm glad that someone other than me and my buddies noticed the constant fouling of Lukas. If the lad went down easier, he'd be getting loads more free-kicks; he's too honest. I saw at least 10 fouls where play was waved on-and as ever, it was a case of once they'd got away with a couple, the opposition realised the ref would let them hold, shirt-pull and grapple all day long. The gulf between refereeing standards at this level and the one above is even greater than that in playing quality.

Communication is one of the basics, you learn it at under7's level. So if our squad are not doing that, what hope have we got?

Yes Plattini definitely deserves a run in the team.

Unfair derogatory comments abound when he plays - totally undeserved.

This guy puts his self about on the football pitch, lays off good balls and is a major handfull for most defences - he would be a perfect foil for the Juke (if only he stopped wandering off to the wings, so annoying).

The Juke and Platt must play closer together - Saturday was farcial with 30/40 yards separating the Juke and Cody for most of the game totally bewildered by that tactic !!!

Cody has to be benched, only a short while playing for CCFC I know but he is clearly not threatening defences as does Platt and we must try any combination that can improve our relegation threatened season.

Cody was withdrawn to wide-left very early in the game, where he remained until the second half. In theory he offers more flexibility in the starting line up, but with Platt in the side we could have withdrawn Lukas into that role (he wanders out there anyway, as you point out). My point is-you can't blame Cody for not being close to the other striker when he's being played on the wing.

However..what that spell out wide highlighted was just how shockingly bad Cody is in terms of positioning, anticipation and reactions. He was constantly around 5 yards off where he was meant to be stood-always giving his man enough space to be a viable passing option, entirely defeating the point of him being there. For all his failings since, even O'Donovan actually played that wide-left role against Blackpool and Birmingham with 5 times the effort and much more nous.

People have hammered AT for the front 2 being too stretched out..I think it's more that Cody is just simply crap at knowing where to stand. A lot of this is down to a lack of an upbringing as a professional footballer; you really can tell he was in nonleague a few seasons back. I described him a few weeks back as Freddy Eastwood without the brain...(geddit?).

Slightly harsh criticism there Nonleague but you do make some good points.
As for Platt, I was one of the many skeptics as he didn't exactly do much last season beyond Christmas but he is continuing to impress me when he plays.
Aerially not the best and obviously not the fastest but he actually has good control on the ball and can play some lovely passes as he did vs Blackpool (I think it was an evening Kick-off so must have been Blackpool...)

Well taken goal on Saturday and he speaks a lot of sense from what I've heard of him. Definately worth a consideration for captain next season maybe? I'd like to see him stick around if he retires whilst with us.

That doesn't stand up to scrutiny though. That first game against Derby at home, Cody and Juke were playing quite close together and Juke was flicking the ball on but Cody wasn't reading it and at times was moving in the opposite direction. I put that down to him being new and not knowing the systems. They are a lot more spread out of late. Cody obviously knew where to stand for that Derby game.

As I mentioned in a previous thread we were at one time playing 4-6-0 - we have clearly lost our shape and the diamond is not working and we are getting marmalised in midfield with bad passess and dispossessions resulting in the majority of recent conceded goals.

I would also say that if there is no communication out there on the pitch we need to choose a different captain.

Nothing I say does though, right, Otis? How many did he score against Derby if his movement was so great?

Yeah well that's 30 mins of screaming at him to close down on Saturday for you! He was on our flank first half and we had a quite fantastic view of his dynamism.

Platt said: "as long as we kept kicking it long and keeping them squeezed up then we picked up the second balls and we were back on them again."

Better be careful with talk like that, otherwise he will get into Thorn's bad books.

For what it's worth I reckon Platt is OK. Not great, but definitely a team player and OK for League 1 which is where we will be next season.

Who said it was great? It wasn't was it. Just saying the pair played much closer together. Would seem that this was Cody's natural instinct.

Since then they have played much further apart. This points to tactics.

No it doesn't, it points to an inconsistent player and your observations being entirely different to mine. Guess we'd better get used to that, eh?

Is this a sly dig at Thorn's style of keeping possession by lots of backwards/sidewards passes? :thinking about:

No, it's a description of what we were doing on Saturday. My mate moaned all game about hoofball and kept asking why Murphy has stopped throwing the ball out all of a sudden. C'mon, don't tell me nobody else has noticed the transformation into a direct side in the past few games?

Clingan has always struck me as a captain who shouts alot of abuse when players make mistakes without doing the simple shouts or encouragement.

Does anyone remember Sammy and Hussey having handbags at the end of the Watford game?
Is it any coincidence that Hussey's dip in form then came?

Home game before Southampton was Burnley, we certainly didn't play direct then. I haven't been to the away games so can't comment on them and we didn't play direct in the first half of Southampton.
Maybe "dig" was not the right word but it sounds as if Platt is advocating the direct game in hope that AT will take it on board and mix up our play style a bit for future games.

Yep. noticed that too.

Keogh seems a more obvious choice for me. Ever present, pretty damn consistent.

Which must means he was following orders from AT and SH then? He was back doing a lot of defending on Saturday and I think Cody is getting a fair bit of stick which is unfair, in my opinion.

I hope the fans don't use the "flop" label and start moaning every time his name is mentioned. Al la Bell, McSheffrey, Hussey and now Murphy.

People had stupid expectations of Mcdonald, that is why he is coming for in for stick now. Not talking personally about anyone, just city fans in general.

It appears that he is following orders. Don't buy this 'he isn't good enough' malarkey. He's only been here 5 minutes. On Saturday he wasn't bad, just anonymous. I would like to see Platt and McDonald being given a chance up front to be honest. The big forward and the nippy striker alongside.

Just look how many goals McDonald scores in the penalty area and 6 yard box!! We simply don't get the ball into those areas. It's no wonder he is pretty much redundant.

Indeed.

Proves that he does get himself in the right positions though doesn't it. Don't think he is a poor player, just at a club that creates very few chances.

Platt talks a lot of sense and maybe something as simple as better communication and buck the team spirit up a bit and start putting points on the board. Who knows?

I'd put him in next game if I were AT.
