City after former England international?

Rumours abound that Coventry City are interested in taking former England international Alan Smith on loan.
The 31 year who is a former BMX British Champion, has played for Leeds United, Manchester United and Newcastle United.
He was told that he was subject to requirements by Alan Pardew who knows City boss Andy Thorn from his playing days last May but has made one substitute appearance for the Magpies this season.
Newcastle are expected to pay the majority of his wages if a deal can be done to bring the experienced midfielder to the Ricoh Arena.

He's got the Telegraph disease too. Pretty sure he means 'surplus.'

Could be subject to requirements. He has to go back as soon as they need him.

Won't be coming here though

All our better players have got on their bike and gone so he would fit in well here

Alan Smith a somewhat failed striker. Certainly not a midfielder as he has been playing mostly the last few years unsuccessfully I might add. Could he rekindle his striking ability at this level? Hmmm kind doubt that tbh. Send him down for a month on loan for free and see how it goes then yeah...

Recall him playing a number of games in the midfield and doing very well in that role.

Perfect player for the hole and adds a bit of experience. Problem is its fantasy to think it'll ever happen.

Has not held a midfield place down at Newcastle for seasons now. Picks up his fat cheque every week....why would he be good for us exactly?

Might be a slight chance that they have a better squad than us so can afford him to go elsewhere and keep matchfit.

Still don't believe it though

To be fair even I heard this today and I never here rumours. It is stupid though he is on £45K a week and has done nothing for years anyway.

Last time he scored was in the 2006/07 season, never scored a goal in 83 games for the Toon. RO'D's single goal makes him a more prolific scorer.

Still think he is a good player but downside is he is slow, so will fit in with the current team

Seriously? We're too good for Alan Smith now??

Just like we were too good for King and Wise?

The guy would be a class above what we have, and for that reason it'll never happen

Alan Smith age 31

Leeds: 172 games / 38 goals
Man U: 61 games / 7 goals
Newcastle: U 83 games / 0 goals !!!

The above goal scoring equates to 6 goals per 46 game season

Has only scored 7 goals since 2004

Has yet to score for the Toon in 83 games

Bit of a discipline record - 7 Reds and 67 Yellows whilst playing in prem.

What I remember of him is that he is quite a skilfull player originally a forward but never achieved the required goal scoring standard and then started to play centre mid but still no goals as such.

Would think he would do quite well in our league playing the diamond role either as anchor or centre.

When Leeds his home town club got relegated from the Prem he said he was leaving as there was no way he would play in the Championship.

If he wont play for his boyhood hometown team then he is not going to come to a bottom 3 Championship side is he?

what about 'kd & crew' holds a fans forum @ the ricoh, & then ALL CCFC fans could be allowed in, not just a select / invited audience, but all, they could hold it in the 'jag' suite, or even in the stadium,
nah,,,,,,,,,, don't suppose he'd have the 'cojones' for that,

Horrible shit of a man. A Leeds fan born & bred, but still he left when they probably needed him most for their most hated rivals. If that's what he calls loyalty then we don't need the parasite.

This could be a cracking deal (if it happens).

There is not many players that go to Man Utd and it's detrimental to their careers but Alan Smith is certainly one of them. I think Fergie tried to get him to play the back up role to Scholes and it never seemed to work. When he started his career at Leeds he was such a natural finisher and had a hell of a lot of promise but destroyed that by joining United. I believe he has had a torrid times with injuries and his discipline and character has always gone against him too.

If he has proven his fitness is back to scratch then a move back to the Championship is just what he needs and why not to us? I would probably take anyone right now as what we have isn't working.

I'm not sure where he actually plays.....he started as a striker, move to united, then failed to make an impact up front so got moved back into midfield. The last I saw him play he was more of a defensive midfield player. Did I read somewhere that he hasn't scored since 2007? Im not sure where we'd play him.....

We desperately need goals!
