All depends how they weight stuff, Portsmouth have won an FA cup & several promotions in the last 25 years, despite successive relegations they won't be last.

City have only been relegated and I don't think we've even finished top 6 in that time. We're bound to be bottom or very close to bottom.

We have only had ONE top TEN finish in the last 26 (probably 27 in a couple of months). That for me is a worse statistic than no top 6 finish in 47.

Throw in 2 relegations, being forced to play in fucking Northampton, and renting the stadium that was built for us from a London rugby club.

And now you can add in the fact that this season we were mercilessly teased with attacking, free flowing football for 4 months, that put us top of the table and in a position where it was unthinkable that we could finish outside the top 6, before following it up with a run of 20 games where we have picked up 19 points.

I'd say we will be safely ranked as number one in this poll.

in fact we wouldnt even win that title, we would fall away at the end, so we are probably the 7th most fickle fans (wouldnt want a top 6 finish)

I was introduced to the faith by my old man in 1969, so missed the Jimmy Hill years. Since then saw us come 6th and get into Europe and win the cup. Apart from that we came 7th with Ferguson and Wallace banging them in and 10th under Strachan despite not winning away once all season.

I debated with myself whether I should encourage my lad to support city, recognising it as potentially a form of psychological abuse, but he does. He's never seen them in the top flight. This year we both thought we might see a promotion, or at least a top six finish. I think the dashing of hopes from January onwards has been about the hardest to take in all my time, and that's up against pretty stiff competition given that City have plummeted after Xmas pretty much every year for 47 years.

I completely agree. 33 years I have supported the club and this has definitely been the most gut wrenching time I can remember. Watching us play this season up until the end of November was an absolute joy, unrivaled by anything since 1998 imo. You started to sense the buzz on matchday that this season was going to be something really special. To then watch us become an utter shambolic mess in the space of a few short months is really hard to take.

As that well worn phrase goes, "It's the hope that kills you".

I told my son at Christmas, “don’t hold your breath, this is Coventry City” and sure enough the inevitable abject failure ensued.

I keep telling myself that surely by the law of averages, something good will happen eventually, but it never does. I’ve given up hoping for it any more, and one day when I least expect it success will come our way.

I agree Lee, outside the top ten 25 times out of 26 is disgraceful. How the hell do we tolerate it?

Since we are into self-flagellation …
In the 48 seasons since promotion to the top flight in 1967:-
Average No. of places from the BOTTOM of the league = 6.8

In the 23 seasons covered by the Mirror article:-
Average No. of places from the BOTTOM of the league = 6.4

On the plus side, I suppose it’s a remarkable achievement to finish so consistently near the foot of the table and get relegated so rarely.

In nearly 100 years since we joined the Football League after the First World War, we have had:-
5 relegations (1925, 1952, 1958, 2001, 2012)
4 promotions (1936, 1959, 1964, 1967)
Three trophies (Division 3 1964, Division 2 1967, FA Cup 1987)

So in the last nearly 50 years only 3 things have actually happened! The heaven of the FA Cup win, and two relegations. A quick glance at some other clubs shows most of them bounce around a lot more, with despair followed by the crest of a wave. It seems we prefer to keep swimming just above the bottom, like footballing halibuts!

I think you also have to take into account the relative size of the club. Coventry is usually accounted the 8th or 9th biggest city in England and is in the middle of Warwickshire with a number of large towns. It only has one club. CCFC arrived in the top tier with huge momentum and very big crowds. So Cov fans can be excused more hope that their area can sustain a successful team than many other places on the list. Wigan, for example is a fairly small place, as are Blackburn and Burnley, and Wigan were a non-league club until fairly recently. I don't think their disappointments compare.
