Am thinking Russia might well beat Wales tonight.
With the Russians nationalistic patriotism will be at the forefront and they will go home in shame if they don't qualify.
Really important for Russia to appear strong as a country, so expect a massive rocket up the arse and a blood and thunder performance tonight.
They win and they will be through to the next stage.
I know they have been poor thus far, but expect a much better effort tonight from them.

There was talk this morning of the scenario that if England win tonight they may well face Albania and I'm sure I heard Roy Hodgson quoted somewhere as saying he would like that.
Personally, I would like England to face tougher opposition. I don't like this hoping for a on easy draw when you are trying to be the best team in Europe.
England should win tonight, but I am a little worried that Hodgson looks like he is going to make major changes for this one. Could backfire on him.

Really is ridiculous that 16 of the 24 teams go through and I think now it is all but certain that a team winning just one match, but losing two, will go through to the next round. Albania being a case in point.
Only 8 teams to drop out and we have already lost Romania and Ukraine.
Just seems wrong that you can lose two matches out of three and progress.

Why would you want tougher opposition? Surely facing Albania would give us more chance of progressing to the quarter final. How is that a bad thing? As we get further on in the tournament we'll face tougher games.

I think to win a tournament you need a lot of luck along the way and part of that would be to face as many teams you can beat as possible. You're bound to face good teams from the quarters up so get as many wins in as possible against weaker sides before you have to get the luck rolling and great performances against stronger sides.
I hope he doesn't change too much but I can see the benefit of resting a few players tonight, Alli and Walker have put in a tremendous effort over the last week and you don't want to tire them out with natural replacements in Clyne and Wilshire available. Personally I'd be tempted to leave Kane in the team tonight, if we're going to do well we're going to need him scoring at some point and a goal tonight before subbing could do just that. I'd even consider playing Vardy and Sturridge either side of him.

Fair point. Can't see us winning it, think we could get to the semis, and that would represent good progress after stinking out the last world cup.

it is a tough one with him. I'd still be tempted to gamble on giving him 45 mins, if he gets a goal thats only 90 mins in the last two games and the goal to give him confidence boost. Although the counter argument I guess would be it's a risk having so many strikers on the pitch with just Rashford to come on and change things

Think the changes on the whole make sense myself. Rose and Walker have tended just to be playing one game a week throughout the season and their efforts in getting up and down the pitch each match will naturally make them more tired than most. Plus one of Slovakia's biggest threats is Vladimir Weiss, and Clyne is much better defensively than Walker.
Alli hasn't played that well so far and it's right he's given a rest, and Henderson/Wilshere will give more natural left/right balance, which I would assume means we will play a diamond. Rooney is a bit of an odd one to leave out, but fatigue could be an explanation, as could Lallana's willingness to press in the 10 position.
Finally, Sturridge and Vardy have to come in for a chance. They changed the game for the better and in Sterling/Kane they will be replacing two underperforming players so far.

Yeah, happy for changes, but the talk is of six. It's not just about the quality of those coming in, it is also about the quantity and the upsetting of the rhythm and balance of the team.
Wilshire is a very different kind of player to Rooney for instance. I rate them both, but I would have been inclined to have only made a couple of changes or so and see if we can win the game early on and then bring on the replacements.

That can happen when there are just two to qualify (one team wins three games, three teams win one game). Italy qualified second from the 82 WC first round with three draws and ended up winning the whole thing.
With some third place teams going through at least it means there aren't any dead rubbers in the final round of games.

Six changes would mostly likely only be four changes from the team that started the second half against Wales. Changing the full backs isn't likely to disrupt the team too much. Plus what are we disrupting exactly? A team that played ok but struggled to make chances and or convert them.
Also come the latter stages we'll be playing a very different game as the level of competition improves. At the moment we are dominating possession and territory. That won't be the case if we play the likes of Germany and Spain.

Yeah, but three draws means you are undefeated in the group stages. Losing two out of three means you are pretty crap.

Rooney has played really well in that midfield role, so there is immediate disruption there.
I am one of Wilshire's biggest fans, but he is a different try of player. A much more busy player rather than the spraying the ball about like Rooney.
Hope it works tonight. Looks like Henderson is in. He can either be very good, or all over the place and his distribution at times is lacking.
Still confident we can win, but think we may just have disrupted the flow of the team a bit.

Another point about playing lesser teams is that it means we will be able to play more games. I'm not expecting us to win the tournament but its nice not to be eliminated after 5 days like in Brazil.

There is an argument for resting our better players so they are fresh and uninjured for the next game. Thankfully we only have one player on a yellow (Cahill) but we could always pick up a red tonight.
I'm not a big fan of wholesale changes but I'm not overly concerned if we do. I'd certainly replace Sterling, Kane and Alli and it seems most people agree with these changes. I wouldn't change the full backs but I don't think there is much to choose between either pair. I would be tempted to rest Rooney but Hodgson can better judge which players are fatigued.

Great day in a City that has organised the event excellently. Bloke from one of the bars spent the day walking round with a stepladder and rope so everyone could hang their flags up. There were also plenty of them that have built temp bars and wheeled them out into the squares.

Agree th full backs and Rooney needed a rest. The team are more than capable of winning against this opposition. Sadly he is there to be shot at if this goes wrong tonight
