Fans singing "you'll never walk alone" at 87 FA Cup final? (9 Viewers)

Just watching DVD of the 87 final with my brother and we noticed a couple of times fans could be heard singing "you'll never walk alone". The latest time I heard it was in second half of extra time so guessing it was our fans rather than the Spurs fans?

Any idea how/why this happened? Did we have a history of singing this...?

In the 70s and 80s most fans sang it originally Man Utd sang it not liverpool

Anfield adopted it after its release by "Gerry and the pacemakers"

My memory is getting worse.... I don't recall city fans singing it at all, unless it was a piss take the times we beat Liverpool?

Gerry marsden presented it to Bill Shankly as they left for a pre season Europe tour
6 months before its general release in 1963. He loved it and found it inspiring the,
associated local press got word back that it was being adopted as the club anthem.

Not sure where you get the UTD link, the only point of contention is that Celtic have
it as there anthem also, but the general and accepted view is that it was first sung
On the Kop in 1963. Rogers & Hammerstein wrote and composed it for the musical
Carousel in 1945, it only gained a wider audience after its release by "Gerry and the
Pacemakers" in 1963 by which time the Kop were already singing it.

I can remember singing "We'll score in a minute" - just before Benno picked up the flick on and stuffed it in the net. We also gave Jimmy Grieves some stick....and in the 70's we definitely did sing "You never walk alone" on some occasions.

I can remember about 77-78 as a kid in the SBS the whole west end singing it
With scarfs held aloft, can't remember who we were playing but I'm sure we were
Playing well. It was even spreading to the rest of the ground,
Even the main stand.

Am I right in thinking that "In our Coventry Homes" is a piss take of the scousers.
From what I remember being told, they never had a Cathedral and we had two after having the second one built after the Blitz.

Liverpool wanted the official tile of City but you can't have the title "City" officially if you don't have a Cathedral.

It would make the words make sense, but she insists that they have had one long before we started singing it.

Can anyone help with this?

She is a proud Scouser and used to slag Cov off as "being sent to Cov" says everything and her friends in Liverpool said Cov was a dive. I used to fight our corner but to no avail.

Last year we had to go to Cov for my Nans funeral and I showed her Lady Godiva and Peeping Tom clock, Lady Godiva statue etc and she admitted that it's not the dive she thought it was and it's a nice place with very friendly people (bloody students kept tying to chat her up, so she was loving it) lol.

Point of this is that we have a pround history as a City and Football Club. People think we are nothing due to that bloody saying and the song Ghost Town.

Wish we could educate people that we are not Hull lol

Liverpool metropolitan (paddys wigwam) was built in the 60s and opened in 1966,
and is the largest catholic cathedral in the uk. The Anglican cathedral was started in
1904 but not finished until 1978, and I believe is also the largest in the uk. Aptly

Have you ever been to Hull? It is an absolute shithole. It is one of the rare places that makes Coventry look more like paradise. I lived on the other side of the Humber bridge to Hull for at least 15 years. And I go back frequently. But I never go to Hull as it is a waste of a day.

A mate of mine went to Hull several times on a "lads weekend" from his local club. He said some of the pubs were open at 9am so they could quickly top up on what they had consumed on the coach journey up there. There must also be a large shopping centre there because he phoned me to say he was lost inside it and couldn't remember the name of his hotel and that he had just wet himself.
So Hull can't be that bad..........can it?
