The Balance / When Will You Be Concerned.... (3 Viewers)

Coz we'd have lost out to other clubs otherwise.

Which disproves the theory of not wanting to pay players until the last minute the one about players going to other clubs over us and the one about us getting players nobody else wants :)

(I know you didn't say them, before you think that!!)

I think its no secret that TM missed out on a few signings early which may have put him behind a little. But he is in a tight spot with regards to the budget and not many clubs will want to lose players so close to the start of a season, so he will have to look to the loan market and use the kids to fill the gaps. Still time to go, but we do need more experienced players in the door and i don't mean over 30's.

So with this i don't expect anything other than free agents and a few loans coming our way before we kick off, and to be honest im not concerned its a long season and we need to get stronger during the season than start and fade.

Just for one year, wouldn't it be nice to get the bulk of your first team in and training together and playing the friendlies and building up a spirit so that we are ready for the off. I think Mowbray did very well with Armstrong and Murphy last year and they paid off, but can he pull another rabbit out of the hat again to get off to such a positive start ??

On the defence side Mowbray has partially created the problem himself. I'm sure Martin would have re signed for the club.

I didn't get the Martin situation the only thing i can think of is that TM was very confident of getting a replacement of the type he wanted when letting Martin go. This is still the case or TM missed out on that target and Martin moved on.

Absolutely.

I think I'd be feeling about 15% better if we had him onboard, which probably tells you how many players I think we still need to bring in.

I feel letting Martin go was a big mistake.

For me, our most improved player last season and our dip in form coincided with his injury. I'd have kept him, but if TM had a plan he needs to start executing it pretty quickly.

If have kept him too. Thought he was decent enough at this level.

Even if we were looking for a new centre half, I thought he was worth keeping as a squad player and keeping a bit of continuity.

Well, you need to look at that list of outgoing players and see who we will really miss. (You missed Fleck off by the way. ;) )

Johnson? We didn't even have him for 80% of the season and you could just about ditto that for Conor Thomas too.

Will we miss Lorentzson? No. Ramage, Hunt, Henderson? Definitely not.

Cole? Again I would say no. He flattered to deceive for the most part. Philips was frozen out for long periods anyway and Maddison missed most of the season.

Looking at the squad as it stands now, I would say we are only missing Aaron Martin and Adam Armstrong. Murphy was very inconsistent and we didn't really have Stephens for that long anyway.

I am not too unduly worried and there will still be loans to come.

Agree with all this except Murphy. We will miss a winger who scores in the double digits

McCann can't sign due to his parent club.

Why did we get Jones right at the very start?
I think it was so you could bring his name up every time there's a discussion
about the lack of signings/ investment . ;)

Wingers by nature, are usually inconsistent.

That is like saying players from Europe are no good in winter.
Are you saying Tommy Hutchison, Ray Graydon, Dave Bennett, Dennis Teaurt, Ryan Giggs, John Robertson, Jimmy Johnstone and I could go on and on were more inconsistent than their team mates....bollocks

So good you named it twice.
Of course there are fantastic consistent wingers,

Surprised tudguy not in some peoples first xi? Have we not learnt that cost us last season? Besides he's done more pre season than sordell to date too?

I do not think that start xi is too bad. Helluva lot of doom mongers here! Best thing to do look at swindons squad as it stands to remain consistent look at their current strongest start xi and compare to ours currently... Imo we look better as things stand!

gk:rcc,burge - ok
left back\wing back:haynes, stokes - ok but haynes must improve
right back:ricketts, willis, spence - could do with a specialist here
centreback:ricketts,willis,harries,stokes - 2 cbs needed urgently
centre midfield:vincelot,gadzhev,rose-1 more CM needed for depth and o be able to push gadzhev forwards when required
attacking mid/winger:lameries,jones,g thomas- 1 with pace needed at least
strikers:sordell,tudgay,thomas - 1 more striker required urgently

by my calculations we need 6 new players. mcann is 1. SO 5 NEEDED

I forgot about Stokes in the middle. I'd be quite happy to get another leftback and have Stokes move central as a permanent thing.

To answer my own question in the OP, Now, now I'm concerned. First we had a load of targets, then we had a few targets but lost a few, now there's a couple of irons in the fire and we may have to offload players from already depleted squad to get in others,

I can honestly see us missing out on a good few were after, not replacing anywhere near enough bodies, even if they were bit part players. If we got burnt out by Christmas last year how on earth are we going to cope with a much smaller squad ?

So the talk will be "we've still got a month to sign players when the season starts", then "but the loan window is open soon", then "we'll do some business in January" and we'll have another disappointing season at the lower end of league one.

I'm actually really quite pissed off

Did you actually read what Mowbray said or just go with the alarmist CT conclusions? What he actually said is there's two players in training now who are likely to be singing shortly and he's looking to bring another five or six in but might, if those players are expensive, have to let one or two go.

There is no loan window, everything has to be done by the end of August so there won't be any talk of that...

That's the thing isn't it. It makes perfect sense unless you just go by the headline.
