Ah, it seems a bit of a mission away from the Greyhound so must be further down.
If you want to go to the Slough you can park right outside the reserve. Do you know the Bird In Hand pub ? Its close to the boozer or the chippy we mentioned okay ? You can't miss it.

You'll love it down there but make sure the dogs don't dive in the lake as the Swans are protective of their young. Saw a Staffie go in once and two swans tried to drown it with their wings, only just got out alive !

I thought I was right ! Yes it was the last killing of a copper in Cov I'm sure.
Nah BBR. There was the one that was shot in Torrington Ave in the late 80's. I was working in Torrington at the time and felt the general feeling in the community. The killer was a member of a gang that had robbed the bank in Tile Hill village and ended up in Torrington Ave after a chase. There's a plaque on the spot where he was shot.

Can't recall that but obviously it did. My sister lived in Tile Hill that time and me and my dad would drink in the Black Prince when we'd go and see her. Was there a pub called The Star around there too ?

That would be the New Star BBR. It was on the corner of Job's Lane and Jardine Crescent. It was burnt down (some silly fools say it was an accident, but us Tile Hill folk know differently!)

Never knew there was a pub on that bit of land.

Didn't know about the policeman until I saw the plaque a few months ago and Googled his name :(

I genuinely thought you might have been an age where you would remember Nick. Apologies if you are only a young 'un! I think it's because I have such strong memories of what happened in Coventry in my lifetime and also that I have a huge interest in the history of the city, I expect everyone to know! :emoji_nerd:
(p.s. I like the new selection of smilies!):emoji_blush:

Here's a photo I took at the Wyken Slough back in its hey-day. I'd be arrested for taking this photo today, though I was only a teenager when I took this priceless photo. I didn't know any of these girls, I just thought they were a cute, happy group and asked them to pose for a photo. They would all be in their 60's now.

There was a Davies Sports shop in Far Gosford St. Maybe this is what BBR was thinking of. I remember there was a night-time break-in and the burglars were still inside when the cops came round. One of the burglars shot and killed one of the cops with a shotgun. I'll try and dig out the story. I'm sure it was early 70's.

fucking hell! Who goes to rob a sports shop armed with a gun? They must have been desperate for some gola sports wear!

Didn't one get killed, (maybe 2), at that bank robbery in Tile Hill, (perhaps in the 80s). Sure the robbers broke into a house in Earsldon to hide from the police, when they surrounded it at least one of them topped themselves.

Gavin Carlton.
One of two officers shot in responding to the robbery.
Think the thieves came from Wales.

Remember the old Pool Meadow Houch ? As a kid my mum or dad when we walked through it would buy me a football magazine from a stall inside the bus station.
Have you any pictures of that time ? I'm sure it was inside the main part.

I have a few BBR. Also a couple of the old "Beech Tree Café". Remember that?

Love the pictures Houh, really brings back some memories. Remeber going swimming on a Saturday at the baths and either going to Fishy Moores or the cafe in Pool Meadow afterwards.

Does anyone else remeber the underpasses that used to be all around Coventry. Am sure one of them used to come up in the lower floor of Owen Owen. If I remeber correctly they were all around Broadgate but then suddenly disappered.

Mr Salmon, you are a life saver.
For years I have asked people do they remember the underpasses and they thought I was mad and I was beginning to think I was.
I distinctly remember the one which came up under the old Owen Owen.
When they created the new square there a couple of years ago they had to spend a fortune supporting the floor as I guess the underpass was there:happy:

Great photos Houch many thanks. None of the paper/magazine stall ? I'm definitely not dreaming as I looked forward to getting a magazine there, and my dad would get a paper. Never mind you can't have every picture on Coventry. Sorry to be a pain but do you recall the chap outside Highfield Road on match days who sold pin badges etc ? He had them all on a large board, not just Cov City but all clubs. I loved seeing him there as I'd buy one every home game !

Definitely, and if it's the one I'm thinking a blind fella worked in there, had steel meshing on the front.
Yep. There was a small kiosk at the exit from Pool Meadow (onto Priory St). Big Paul Raven, used to sell the Telegraph there for years. It was a small island type thingy. If you look closely at picture #7 (with the green posts in front) you can see Pauls little Telegraph box. That was where the book/sweet kiosk was also.
