A mother and her ex-partner have been jailed for 13 years each after being convicted of feeding drugs to her four-year-old daughter.

Poppy Widdison collapsed at her home in Grimsby and died in hospital from a cardiac arrest in June 2013.

Her mother Michala Pyke, 38, and her former partner John Rytting, 40, were found guilty of child cruelty, last month.

The pair were also jailed for supplying drugs.

Passing sentence, Judge Jeremy Richardson QC said the defendants "existed in a swamp of drug addiction and drug pedalling" and Poppy was "plunged into mire of drugs".

"The life of Poppy can only be characterised as tragic from the moment she was conceived," he added.

The jury at Hull Crown Court heard Pyke, of Ladysmith Road, and Rytting, of Frederick Street, encouraged the girl to eat sedatives because they felt she was an inconvenience to their relationship.

Text messages between the pair talked about Poppy having a "blue Smartie" - believed to be a reference to diazepam, and going to sleep, the court heard.

A post-mortem examination could not establish a cause of death, but toxicology tests found she had ingested significant amounts of heroin and methadone for a period of between two and six months before her death.

'Unbelievable vileness'
In a statement, Poppy's father Brendan Widdison said his daughter loved playing with animals and was "everything to us".

"Her bedroom remains untouched just as she left it with all her toys from her birthday that she never got chance to play with," he said.

"I agree that there was failings at different times in Poppy's life but none of this resulted in her death. This was down to two people [and their] despicable acts of unbelievable vileness."

A serious case review into Poppy's death found agencies missed several chances to protect her.

The review found council services did not know the extent to which "she was exposed to risk and harm" daily.

13 years hardly seems enough does it? They knew what they were doing and they knew the risks. the poor girl was just 4 years old.

Would think the sentence needs to be much closer to 20 years, if not more.

Hopefully the same will happen as Daniel Pelka's Mum / Step Dad.

Why on earth would you feed a kid Heroin? Just to make them sleep or something?

It's beyond words isn't it.

Was trying to tell the story to my missus, but she refused to listen.

13 years for taking a life and a life of someone so young. Just doesn't seem right at all.

It's another one where you hope they get their true sentence dealt out by other convicts

Maybe they heard stories of their Mum dipping their dummy in whiskey and thought it was the same?

Should make them drink bleach and eat random chemicals to burn their insides away :)

The worst thing is, they did it because she was an inconvenience. There are couples out there who can't have kids who would kill for a little girl to dote on and look after.

Not enough of them sadly, or we could take kids off shitheads like this at the first sign of trouble.

Really would bring in castration for cases like this. What's to stop the Mum going out and spreading her legs again once she's out? Then either another kid gets fucked up or the State has to look after them (which fucks them up anyway).

Rusty Knives and no pain relief would do the trick!

They should let her dad have a word with the bloke as well in a room with no cctv where everybody suddenly doesn't see things.

why the fuck didn't they ring the social and say take this little girl into care we can't look after her? Selfish, low life, sub human scum.
And as Shmmeee pointed out, why is this not a murder?
