You missed Curbishley managing Charlton to positions we can only dream of, right?

I say we should keep Slade. He took over from Venus who had left the side without confidence and on a relegation slump. It was never going to be an easy job. We have been unlucky with late goals. But we are playing better and scoring a few goals. Before he came in we were having games without a shot on target. Some games we were lucky to have a shot.
Give him a chance. I still fancy us to get to safety. And if we even get to have a chance of staying up on the last day of the season we should certainly keep him. He has made decent sides before on a broken shoestring. Just what we are going to need if we stay up or not.

I have advocated getting rid of Slade, but that was only because I thought that maybe a new guy at the helm might bring a honeymoon period and produce a few wins to give us a whisper of a chance.
Otherwise I would say keep him. Also for me, the thinking is in terms of who is going to be in control next season. If it is still going to be Slade, then fine. If he is definitely not staying past May and we ARE going down, I think it would be wise to let Ricketts have a go if he was to be the new man in charge.
Slade seemed to be the right appointment for us. Even if we are going down I want to see us go down with some fight in our bellies and not just with a whimper.
Saturday was a good start, so let's hope we can keep that up and give ourselves at least a chance.

Were you watching the same match as me ? A poor Gillingham team were all over us most the second half and the manager was totally unable to counteract it. Same as the previous home game v 4th division Wycombe.

All over us? I wouldn't quite say that.
Yes, we were on the back foot and holding on quite a bit, but first half we should have been out of sight and played really well.
A game of course is 90 mins. Had the situation been reversed and we had been poor in the first half, but then played really well in the second, then we would be all on here saying how brilliantly we did.
Yep, on the back foot against Gillingham and Wycombe come the end of the game, buy you have to look at the whole picture, not just how we finished the match and of course you do also have to factor in the fact that we have been on such a poor run of form that it is no wonder we are really tense and nervous and mistake riddled when trying to secure the win as the game wears on.
Another win or two and our confidence should then be sky high.
Don't just look at the end of games, but look at the matches as a whole and we deserved to win both those games.

Next season's manager should be Slade as long as he promises not to play long ball.
We cannot keep chopping and changing managers it is crazy.
It's leads to wholesale squad changes.
New formations tactics ethos never works then it all changes again.
We need one manager to last 5 years to start to see the results of the foundations they put in place.

Whoever it is will need to do be able to do something that hasn't been done for years & that is to get whatever squad he wants signed up as soon as the possible and not hold out till the last minute trying to buy players who don't want to join us and then ending up with a ramshackle squad

Out of interest what would you of done differently in that game with the match day squad at your disposal against Gillingham? It's half time, your 2-0 up after a very satisfying 1st half and your making a sub as your keepers got concussion.

We had limited options for sure. Both Thomas's had knocks and Beavon of course was missing.
Ideally we would have liked to have taken Tudgay off as he was seemingly beginning to run through treacle, but having to bring RCC on really left Slade with a big headache.

It's gonna be regardless of if we're league one or two. They've shown this season that the majority are simply not up to the task. A few may have grown over the season for the experience but this is a squad that needs rebuilding for the better.
There will be players out there in the summer that will have the right mental attributes to balance with a few that have grown this year to make a very competitive side that needs a new spine and core players to let some of our kids develop further.
A summer rebuild is a must early on.

Long ball is his modus operandi, has been and always will be. It is one thing to expect flowing football and get his style of play, but some on here were extolling his virtue of being a lower league specialist and was just what we needed to bully our way out of trouble.
He has done just that without the results. He won't change because that is not his philosophy.
Personally I would change as soon as possible but luckily its not my decision.

Some very good points made.
However don't be too worried about the long ball tactics it's more horses for courses there. Saturday in the first half the players played with confidence there and played some fairly decent stuff and mixed it up with balls on the deck long and short with some big balls over the top.
Sure there has been times where players have just aimlessly lumped it without looking for a sky blue shirt, that's lacking confidence. That said there has been games we've just lumped it and not put it in the channels and made sensible use of it.
Come December again to late February we will need some sensible long balls for the majority of the game should we be in league two.
Please just take 5 mins to see last weeks mid weeks games in league two highlights from the night we played Wimbledon. The vast majority of goals were from long balls and set pieces/free kicks. Not a great deal of football was played on the deck as the pitches ain't up to it.
Remember Blackpool's last year? Terrible pitches, like going back 20 years.

Without his team of players and all shot of confidence he so nearly got 2 wins in his first 3 games. Wimbledon too. This is with making the best of what he inherited which we all no was very poor.
He's proven his tactics work with 3 play off final finishes and building teams without a penny to be competitive.
He deserves a summer to build a team of his players, I believe he'd get us competitive.
Long ball ain't a issue for many other sides in this league, granted they may be better equipped at this moment in time

However, he appears absolutely tactically clueless. Long ball football (and that's being generous), to minute strikers and ultra defensive tactics is his MO with no plan b or willingness to react to games. If it worked then it's easier to accept, but until Saturday, it hasn't.
When we first appointed him a few people within the game slightly diminished my enthusiasm describing him as a 'clown' and 'clueless' - I didn't want to believe that, but they are being proven correct.
Despite all of the above, I am reserving some judgment based on the circumstances i.e. when given a whole summer to plan, train and purchase, with a team not already rock bottom we may see a different approach, but I doubt it.
He's clueless and plays the worst football I've witnessed, but If he keeps us up he should stay, as that would be a fantastic achievement, but if he doesn't there is literally no reason to keep him.

I am wondering what game you were watching, after 5 minutes of the second half starting Gillinghams change of tactic was as clear as the nose on your face they simply moved up emblock 5 yards and we retreated back which invited pressure they got to 2-1 and imo it was next goal the winner thankfully it didn't happen. The remedy ? Put another body in the centre midfield losing the keeper was immaterial to the outfield problem. I never as a rule criticise managers but this blokes tactics are non league standard. Having said that I hope I can eat humble pie come the end of the season.

Yes correct Gillingham pushed further up the pitch, there substitution was key for me. No 19 I forget his name now, big strong quick player. Won a lot of balls in between midfield and defensive lines and as a result the midfield dropped and defenders dropped too to a scary deep line. I seen Slade gesturing several times to push up as many of us were in that second half as we're we're far too deep for comfort and couldn't gain control to build our own play. I think that come with nerves and lack of confidence to see games out. I agree we could of put another body in midfield like bigi?
However for me RS had Tudgay doing just that role which gave us no outlet so put Yakubu on to give a outlet and JJ instead of Thomas for the ball carrier and pace.
For me the major concern was how Haynes became so exposed as the 2nd half went on and we cramped the midfield but became so narrow.
