On the day we lost 6-0 at Everton my uncle took me to Nuneaton v Oxford in the cup, it
Was carnage afterwards with police and Oxford fans fighting running battles afterwards.

Smallest following - away at Chelsea (94) midweek and West Ham (92 ish). Grounds being redeveloped. 150 ish at most at both. We won at Chelsea by the way (2x Ndlovu).

I think that was pre Avramovitch and even though Chelsea had got to the Cup Final the gate was about 8k. Now they are one of the "big" Europeon clubs but only on the back of money. Just shows there is still hope for us if someone can come in and get things right.

Thats correct. They had just got to the FA Cup final the week before. Arsenal were on telly in the Cup Winners Cup final that night.

I remember the Liverpool away game, i recall a shoe bring thrown around in our end that night not sure why.
On way back to coaches it was terrible, they kept trying to make us say something to work out if we were City or not, we we on outside of a large car park and they we inside throwing things at us. Was about 18 at the time an Apprentice at the Alivis, did not get home till 4 am.
Hated Liverpool fans ever since. Then they got us banned from Europe and never got to see us play as cup winners.

Sort of similar except I remember seeing the Coventry Cup Final flags being sold up Wembley Way with WINNERS now printed on the front. Sadly mine went in a house move.

I was an Alvis apprentice too, 1973 to 1977. Then worked in Plant Layout for two years. Probably a bit older than you as I think I had finished my apprenticeship by the time of this game. When were you an apprentice there?
There was also a young guy there on crutches swinging them around his head at Liverpool fans in the away end. Could see all of this as I was in the stand adjacent to the terrace.

That was the official attendance wasn't it. The amount inside the ground was more than that though as some of the gates were burst open by those stuck outside and apparently hundreds (thousands?) more got in for free.
Not sure why other attendances where the gates remained intact would not be accurate however!

Can remember going to places like Chelsea and Arsenal and paying on the gate, no chance of that happening these days as an away fan.

Up till the late 80s the vast majority of games were cash entry onto terraces.

Some games were all ticket. The quarter final game against Wolves was so fairly accurate away attendance figures were available.

Yeah, I called the Selhurst Park the next day to ask what our stand held and they told me 8,000. There were also City fans behind one of the goals as I remember a " WILLENHALL" banner being held aloft.

I was there that night, when we got back to are coach the Liverpool fans had smashed in the windows.
We didn't get back to COV until 5am.
So it didn't surprise me when Liverpool got all the English teams banned from Europe, ( scumbags ) :banghead:

I like the Liverpool people. When ever I have been there I have found them to be friendly and funny. For one game up there I was in a beaten up old mini. I stopped at some traffic lights when a young lad knocked on then opened the drivers door and asked if I was going to the game. When I said I was, he asked if he and his mates could have a lift to the ground. They couldn't have been nicer. Showed me where to park, escorted me to the away end. A good punchline to this would be that they mugged me and that the car was up on bricks when I got back to it. However that wasn't what happened. (This was the season after the League Cup match and as it was early season we were top of the league and as it was us, we lost one nil). Most people I think are good. In Liverpool as in Coventry you will find some scumbags. As I say I have always really enjoyed being in Liverpool in listening too and joining in their conversations.

Monners - a "real fan" would have known we didn't play West Ham at Upton Park in 92, however we did play them in their relegation season in 91-2
I went to the Chelsea game, we were in the main stand as what was to become the Matthew Harding stand was being built, 8000 plus game a couple of weeks before the cup final. Chelsea-Giants of the game!
I can remember a game in 73 at Easter against Sheffield United where took 2 Red House coaches(about 75 fans) to Bramhall Lane and lost 3-1 at the 3 sided ground just weeks after going out to Wolves in earlier mentioned quarter final.

I was a year out - just torn up my Wembley ticket in penance.
Anyway - we lost 3-2 and Julian Darby scored twice. John Williams had stonewall pen denied. We was robbed!

Peter Ndlovu got 1 and Steve Morgan the other. It was 1 of only 2 games I missed that season as I had tonsilitis and the game at Newcastle was called off when we were on our way up & when it was replayed they didn't allow away fans because of the redevelopment of St James Park
