Well it's all very quiet at CCFC and every two years it's a long quiet summer with little football to talk about as there is no Major tournaments.

So let's bring it CCFC based as we like a debate. Jordan Willis has a year left on his current deal. Would you keep him no matter what or try and cash in on him while he has value.
How valuable is Jordan Willis to our back 4 next year in your eyes?
In this scenario the "hypothetical" instruction from above is to MR what money you sell is yours to reinvest in a attempt to get out of league two quickly.

I would cash in to attempt to purchase James Collins to bolster the attack, we need to out score teams to have any joy next year.

I like JW but I find he plays a lot at RB taking DKE spot. I would much rather see DKE start, and in (what will hopefully be) a league 2 promotion push, I think we can find a better, more experienced league 2 lump of a centre half. So personally I'd sell.

Pretty much exactly my thoughts too. I prefer DKE as an attacking fullback. Defensively I'd say they are 50:50. And Willis has never convinced me in the middle of a back four (which presumably is the way Robins will set us up).

Good points... MR did seem to play him more as a right back giving preference to Nathan Clarke and Rawson/Turnbull even at Wembley Willis played at right back when we were short on central defensive options with preference for Turnbull and Stokes.

I feel we can let him go even tho he's quick and versatile.

Depends on what other signings we are looking for.

I think DKE would be OK in League 2 but as Willis can play both he would be would be good for the squad.

If we can get decent money for Willis then let him go.

This is the thing, he's a good player to have around as he's very versatile and quick. Yet he does make errors as does any league one or league two defender will.
Also is he gonna hold up the emergence of DKE and disrupt his development only to walk away for free next summer?

Personally I'd still cash in early on while there are options to replace him this summer rather than a club come in offering peanuts in January and disrupts the squad when we will struggle to replace him.

Ha ha, no unfortunately not. The only reason I'm for selling him is MR possibly sees him as a right back and I don't rate him as a right back. I see him more as a central defender, but more importantly there is value in him that "could" be invested back into the team in a more suitable area like a goal scoring target man.

I think he looks a decent player and could do well in a good team but every time he's regularly played we've tended to be shit.

I'd be happy for him to stay but at the same time I'd be happy if we sold him and invested the money into a couple of good quality league 2 players to get us out of the league.

I don't think I'd be overly concerned about any of our players going in pre season as long as we weren't short like last year.

This is true, and Willis did do well at times but was also part of the defence in some of our darker afternoons of the season at Oxford, Southend and Cambridge alongside Turnbull.
I'd keep the wheel of change turning with new players and new mentality coming in

i can see thats what u want steve, a tottaly new team because you are still blaiming last season on players solely.

robins showed they can win many games in league 1. so we should only get rid if there is really an issue, not just because they are tarnished.

Right... your partly right yes... Plenty we're not up to the physical side of the game and struggled, not what you want that to happen again on even shitter pitches against average players who will try to bully you to get the better of you man for man. Others were not ready for the weekly demands of the game and learning.

Willis I've stated that I see value in and beneficial to invest back in the team, would be fairly solid in league two but like I say... sell and recycle the cash in better areas.

I think I'd keep, (with the added caveat that I want him to sign an extended contract).
Whatever our first choice of back 4, we will need alternatives and I think he is a capable league one player, so should be fine in league two.
If he doesn't want to sign an extension (or one isn't offered) and a reasonable offer comes in, I guess I would sell.
If no good offer comes in, I'd keep, even for a season, as I think he should be in (or close to) our starting eleven and if he can be an overall positive in a promotion challenging season, that is worth the loss of income to gamble on another player that might prove more effective (and might not...).

100% keep. People cried out for a "lump of a centreback" last year, we got Clarke and guess what, he was fucking shit. That's the last thing we need again.
If I were Robins I'd take the captaincy off him and lift that weight from his shoulders from last year (it's obviously going to Doyle) and try and convince him to stay and play out his last year for us in a push for automatically going back up. I think Willis alongside McDonald will be a decent partnership for us at League 2 level. And his versatility is a plus for us.

I doubt he'll be with us at the start of the season though as I think we'll cash in on him as one of our saleable assets.

I'd keep and try and add 1 year to his contract with a sale clause if we don't get promoted.

I'd rather keep him than Bigi, Burge and Thomas 2bh.

Turnbull is likely to leave with that release clause in his contract

I'm sorry but I disagree.
Nathan Clarke was exactly what we needed at that time, just a more mobile quicker one would of been nice. He did everything we had been needing in winning everything in the air, and added the vital experience and commanding voice at the back.
Yes he had some very poor games too and can be faulted for a few goals but if Bradford are releasing him in January Gary Cahill you ain't getting....
What we did get was a league one experienced head who battled 80% of the time he was here and went toe to toe with the physical target men other clubs threw at us and gave Bradford's Charlie Wyke nothing all game, and helped see us over the line in other games too.
Like I say that's the market we're in and type of player we will ideally need again for league two.

For me it depends what happens with Stokes.If Stokes signs we could possibly afford to lose JW, although personally I would like him to stay as he is versatile and also I think he will do well for us.

I think he is ambitious though, couple that with him being a saleable asset, and Robins may need some of the cash from his sale, I can see him going.

We must've watched a different Nathan Clarke though. I expected a leader when Slade brought him in, someone that would coach the players around him and gel the back four together. That I'm afraid didn't happen, now I'm not stupid enough to think that he's solely responsible for that, he obviously isn't. But I spent the first half of last season being told by SW88's mate that we needed a brute of a CB to come in, someone that knows the division etc etc. Then we got him and we were still shit and in my eyes he didn't improve the team one jot.

His passing was poor, he was too slow, his positional sense not good enough and I don't remember one stand out game from him.

What we missed last year was Stokes, he commands that back four for us. If we keep hold of him then have Willis, McDonald and DKE alongside him that'll be a back four that should see us out of this division imo.

The club currently has 3 (not out of contract) sellable assets in Cian Harries, Jordan Willis and Ben Stevenson. I would be surprised if them 3 are still at the club at the start of the season. I see Ben going to a Championship club, possibly Brentford may try to swoop for him at a cut price after strong interest in January. Cian to the Premier League and Jordan to Rotherham/lower Championship side.

More than happy to bow to your knowledge of lower league football an hope your right. Is McDonald a lot better than Clarke ?

A fair worded come back... rare on here.
Like I said Bradford were releasing him in the January window to free up some room to manoeuvre for there final push so he was not gonna be flawless and his pace was not the best, and as you say passing was some what questionable at times but I felt he gave plenty to the side from oppositions Ariel threat. This was his strength, and handling the rough and tough side of the game. He was a league one player and 33 so it's not as tho we were paying a fee for the one who would save us.
I did see a improvement however ultimately the scores didn't reflect that and that's where we wanted to see it most. He did bring a improvement to Lee Burge in his time and Clarke took control of the back 5.
Thought he was good in the Bolton game and Gillingham game, but ok in most others and poor at the rest notably Bury and Oldham.
A defensive unit of DKE, Willis, Mcdonald and Stokes does concern me ATM tho.
I like Stokes but I still feel we need a experienced central defender to run the back line especially as we currently have reality 2 inexperienced keepers and a contract offered to Lee Burge.

Completely agree with you, Stephenson and Harries are not suited to league two and are very appealing to league clubs higher up the leagues who will be happy to pay a fair market fee and take the chance on there development while offering improved terms to what there likely on.

And with Willis this was where I was trying to see what would people value more Willis with a year left on a deal or potentially 350k to half a million?
But then if he left next summer would we get nearly 350k to 500k in a tribunal fee as he's under 24 with a likely 150 career appearances to his name?
That's another scenario....
