IT IS really sad to see what is going on at Coventry City and the trouble they find themselves in, especially considering they used to be stalwarts in the Premier League.
I get bored rigid with the goings on at the Sky Blues every day, although I now feel very informed, as Richard Keys is a big Coventry fan and he talks about it non-stop, whether I want to listen or not.
I can see why he is getting so worked up because it really is a difficult situation that the club find themselves in financially – and one that is clearly hurting the team’s ability to get results out on the pitch.
Keysey keeps promising me that something is going to happen and in recent weeks it has looked like the rumblings are there and that positive news is on its way.
I would think that something has to happen, and quickly, if Coventry are going to stay in the Championship.
It is clear to me that Sisu Capital Limited cannot remain at the club.
The fans don’t want them, that is very clear, and they don’t seem to be helping much with regards to the playing side.
I guess you would call them the owners but it is all pretty much up in the air and I don’t think Sisu can stay there much longer.
It seems to me they’ve insisted on selling all their best players – it’s simply asset stripping.
The likes of Marlon King, Aron Gunnarsson, Ben Turner, Kieran Westwood and Lukas Jutkiewicz have all left the club and gone on to pastures new, Lukas having just joined Middlesbrough on a permanent deal.
Manager Andy Thorn got some revenge by beating Middlesbrough quite convincingly last weekend – but he won’t be happy with what is going on at the club I am sure.
Andy has been doing a good job with everything considered and, although looking at the Championship table it doesn’t look good, I think the fact that he has been able to get the players concentrating on the on-field matters then that is really important.
When you look at it from Sisu’s point of view, it seems as though they are just making as much money as they can before they decide to sell. I know there are bids on the table for the club, certainly one very positive bid from Coventry fans, and I really hope something can get sorted sooner rather than later.
Certainly if Sisu decided to accept the offer it would put the club back in business again and on a more secure footing but whether it will happen I don’t know.
They aren’t obliged to sell to anybody and they can hold out as long as they want, as long as they pay the bills.
But it is sad to see the way Coventry are going and it would be great to see somebody sort it out.
Not only because they are a great club with a rich history – but also because I cannot keep listening to Keysey going on about it, it’s doing my head in!
