what was that all about yesterday with such a heavy police presence? I’ve only ever seen police horses at Millwall games since we were in the championship.

Is using horses something to do with them being in the dark ages up there and only very recently discovering the wheel?

I’ve seen police horses several times the last few years including at Blackpool and Walsall, but yesterday was a little odd with under a 1,000 away fans.

The Carlisle fans are saying the same but apparently it’s happened before this season, including when Port Vale visited but they only took a following of 200.

Interesting that they only expected 700 but nearly 850 turned up...

There were 8 vans outside station in the morning and police everywhere. After the game they penned and escorted about 40 young lads from Carlisle away from the city fans going back to the town centre. I think it was going to kick off as they looked like they were up to no good. Not like a few 13 year olds giving it the bigun. The horses weren’t messing around and when they arrested one lad a horse turned on the path and trampled a car.

1st thing we noticed when getting off the train was the high number of police presence even as early as 12 o'clock there were about 5 vans, 4 horses and around 30 officers with 2 cameras and a car of barking dogs just outside the station!
The only thing we could make of it was that a ground that normally has 150 away fans that is about to get 700, the police panicked OR they had information that it was likely to kick off!

I spoke with a policeman who said that they were expecting fans from the celtic rangers game as well at the station. Apparently they get the fast train to Carlisle and then the local service back to Dumfries and Galloway.
I see that Port Vale had a couple of thousand less for the Luton game yesterday!

I went to Carlisle in the 70's and they had a hard mob back then and were ranked as bad as Millwall and Leeds, and we got welcomed with bricks and bottles by the friendly locals,so maybe they still have a bad reputation !

Never been to Carlisle Utd but have been to one of their "derbies" at PNE and it was certainly quite lively.

Obviously was a big away following for Carlisle as we were listening to BBC Radio Cumbria on the way home and the Carlisle version of Clive Eakin commented to Keith Curle that if they had regular away attendances of over 800 his transfer kitty would have a big boost! Incidentally Keith thought that a draw would have been a fair result, a view that the commentator responded too with an incredulous “really?” City much the better team in the second half. Carlisle were on a good run but the bad performance and result had lots of texters calling for the manager’s head.
I spoke to a few people around the stadium yesterday and would have to say that the Carlisle people I met were very friendly, polite and smiley. A nice friendly, community club.

I witnessed their notoriety that day in the 70's,but we weren't exactly angels ourselves.Worst hooligans I'd say were at Stoke away 70's/80's. They'd lob anything at you,bricks,bottles,stones, and that was after their team had won !

If I recall, didn't they use to wait by either a roundabout or dual carriageway and watch the opposition fans drive in as they approached the ground?

I remember Blackburn away (FA cup 4-1 game) they kept all the coaches in at the service station and took us all in to the ground together in in convoy with police escort!

One game at Stoke a few hundred of us City fans were making our way back to the station. As we passed a graveyard at the front of a church and being led by about a dozen coppers,up from behind the gravestones were Stoke fans ! They were throwing bricks at us and the coppers shouted for us to run. We didn't have a chance so we legged it and how the hell we got to the station was pure luck and adrenalin I reckon.They were trying to attack our train, but we got cocky when in the train and gave them the hand signals etc.I'll never forget that day !

Hats off to the 800 who made such a long trip on the back of such a poor performance at Port Vale, especially at this time of the year with so many fixtures. Glad that the result made it worth the time and effort.

Not so much for the trouble but Chelsea was always an experience late 70s/80s. Always huge Police presence,( year we lost 6-2 remember a police helicopter), used to stop all traffic within a certain radius of the ground. Then you would be stuck on that huge open terrace with idiots from that massive stand on the left lobbing stuff at you.
