His agent pushed the move to Villa as more cash for him and Dublin (only doing his job I guess). The Blackburn deal was agreed, but they were offering too much at £6,500,000 as the contract said anything over £6m was a release clause. The agent aware of that and advised Villa who offered £6,000,001 (99p too much I guess!) with the balance to the signing on fee instead. According to John Gregory's book, he told Strachan who was less than pleased as Richardson hadn't even bothered to let him know!

That was another reason he went to Villa-Richardson was negotiating with Blackburn but didn’t have anything to do with the Villa deal.
